I apologize if this information has been posted elsewhere. Here is how I was able to change companion clothing/armor. In this example, I will change robe for Anders, and explain difference if changing Isabela:

http://www.anders_robe.jpg- Using GFF Editor (V4.0), open an existing savegame
- Expand SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS
- Expand the one related to Anders (gen00fl_anders)
- Expand SAVEGAME_APPEARANCE
- Change index 16321 (SAVEGAME_APPEARANCE_TYPE) = 15. This seems to work for male. Change to 16 for female (e.g. Isabela)
- Change index 16237 (SAVEGAME_APPEARANCE_ORIGINAL_TYPE) = 15 (16 for female)
- Expand SAVEGAME_EQUIPMENT_ITEMS (index 16219)
- Expand the one for Anders robe (gen_im_fla_anders_02)
- Change TEMPLATERESREF to one of the available robes (e.g. gen_im_arm_cht_lgt_act3_04). For Isabela in image I used gen_im_arm_cht_noba_t1)
- Save (have to use SaveAs)

Notes:
- This is very rough guide. Equipment properties can also be changes as explained in various other threads.
- I don't know if values 15 (male) and 16 (female) are constant.
- Varioius item properties can also be set as explained in various other threads.

Nice work. Can you give them any armor/robe using this method?

I ask becausethe armors with stats all have the restriction of "Hawke only," so does changing their appearance to 15/16 alleviate that issue?

And of course, do characters revert to their default appearance at times?

Yes, changing to 15/16 represents male/female player (as far as know). Doing so, let's companion wear "Hawke only" items.

I've played several hours this way, with no reverting or other issues yet.

Sweet, I'll have to give this a try later. Isabela would definitely lose some of her va-va-voom curves, but an acceptable sacrifice in order to have her appear in decent combat attire.

This method prevents reverting, but what slots do companions have for gloves, boots, etc? I cannot equip anything on them due to the stupid "Hawke only" requirement--only items placed using gff will appear, but companions only have a single armor slot....which you can replace for a single item, so they can't run around with a full set of armor on.

Anyway to add item slots (boots, gloves, helm) to a companion's equipment set? Or anyway to fully remove the "Hawke only" restrictions from an item?

It's true this method is not ideal, and lacking item slots, it involves equipping companions via savegame edit.

I have no trouble equipping full armor (gloves, boots, etc). Here is Isabela with boots, gloves, and chest armor:

All I did was copy glove and boot lines in SAVEGAME_EQUIPMENT_ITEMS from player to companion. They don't show up as slots in the game, but they work fine anyway.

gotta ask you this, can you change your own champion armor looks with this method? I would want to change my warrior armor into mage armor

Yes, you can change your own armor, weapons, and backpack items in the same way. You can also give properties to your various items.

And of course you can also mix and match abilities using similar technique. Here is my Rogue with Mage ability Mind Blast:
