Dragon age drops to 5th in the UK (PC) after being the top selling game the week before

http://www.chart-tra...t.jsp&ct=110022

Riding high on metacritic Shogun: Total War 2 has taken the top spot (average rating 91 on metacritic - 8.6 user score).

Thoughts? Do you think poor sales might affect the possibilty of DA3?

After DA2, I don't really care anymore. If I want more quality DA adventure, I will go back to Origins. If I want more hack n' slash rpg, I will wait for Diablo 3.

It's been in the lead for two weeks. And it's still solid.

My initial thoughts are this was to be expected when so much emphasis was put on pre-ordering. Everyone that was willing to pay full price probably preordered, while those who didn't are most likely those who wanted to wait for it to go on sale. Because of the signature edition, I was very much expecting to see DA2 as a "one week wonder" in the charts.

What was it up against last week? 5 days of shogun, which is obliterating it currently. You fangirls. So cute.

Not a chance in hell; DA3 is years and plenty of hype away, plus Bioware will listen to the forums for what players are looking for.....

Not nearly as much as poor sales for SWTOR would.

In all honesty, if DA2 does bomb I hope they move on to other projects.  The worst thing Interplay ever did was to corrupt the name of Baldur's Gate and Fallout with their mainstream consolized rush projects.  I'd rather not see another Dragon Age game than to have it dragged through the mud again:?

I'm hoping Skyrim does well, just to show Bioware that freedom and variety really are appreciated.

Here's the previous weeks chart.

The competition was not strong with the top 5 consisiting of

1. Dragon Age (duh!)
2. Football Manager 2011 (released December 2010)
3. Rift (New MMO)
4. DOW2: Redemption (an expansion pack)
5. The Sims 3 (released 2009)

In the second week DA2 actually faced up against AAA talent (Assasin Creed, Homefront, Showgun) and got  a beatdown dropping to 5th place. Heck even FM11 managed to lap DAII.

To me anyways the first week indicates people who have bought the game without having a chance to react to the negativity surrounding it currently on metacritic and review articles (preorders and 1st week sales) and new consumers are reacting to the criticism by not buying DAII.

Not to mention that DA2, only a week or two after its release, is already going on sale. Both BestBuy and Amazon, I think, are selling DA2 for a third off.

I don't know about Europe, but retailers in the U.S. are dropping the price on it.  Amazon has it marked down $20, in it's second week!  Yeah, demand for DA2 is low.

I hope Bioware can recover from this. Mass Effect 2 sold poorly too so I fear this may mean EA shutting Bioware down.

Colour me sceptical - there does not appear to be any solid evidence to support this theory.

Locally it has almost sold out on all platforms. So I'm a bit doubtful that the sales are doing as bad as some are hoping.

While I agree that'd be the natural EA conclusion to something like this, it never would have happened if they hadn't forced them to get the game out so fast. ME2 and DA2's failures are both on EA's account. They think that they can take Bioware's rpg fanbase, and turn out a game every year to get money from us. What they need to understand is that we value quality games over rushed games. I'm sure we all have the patience to wait for Bioware to fully develop their games. DA2 has many bugs that are gamebreaking. Some companion quests can't even be finished, and it's really an annoyance. If they would have waited, their sales would have been so much better. But EA's philosophy is get it out quick, and make a quick buck off of it. They don't understand that if they take their time, and release a highly polished, quality drenched game they will actually make more profits off of it rather than a large amount in the first week, and then very few in the subsequent months. But some things never change. EA's business plan is one of them. I'm glad people are rioting on the forums, because it shows them we won't put up with their junk.

I don't really feel that Mass Effect 2 was rushed. It had a few bugs but it felt like a huge improvement over Mass Effect 1 in terms of gameplay and overall polish.

I think Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 selling so poorly had mostly to do with a poor marketing campaign. Dragon Age 2 especially had almost no marketing. Hell, the game didn't even have a collector's edition.

Haha good one. Mass Effect 2 sold MANY MANY MANY copies. I don't know who informed you...but the game absolutely dominated 2010. It also won tons of awards. So...?

ME2 wasn't rushed. DA2 was rushed. I agree, Bioware does not have a tendency of releasing rushed, buggy games. DA2 seems to stand out regarding this, and I think EA is indeed to blame. Also, I am hoping they are focusing on ME and may have not put the heart into DA2 as they could have. If this is the case, that's fine with me, because I am a huge fan of ME.

So, here's to praying the premature buggy release of DA2 was due to ME hype and anticipation/dedication, not due to EA's greedy impatient desire for money
I fear the latter may be truer, however :\\

I know it was well received critically, but I heard it sold under 2 million copies which is less than what Dragon Age:Origins and the original Mass Effect sold. Usually when a sequel fails to outsell it's predecessor that is considered a bad sign since sequels are supposed to sell better.

I think DA2 is a good value at around 30-40 bucks. I would recommend the game to my friends at this price range.

the freedom of talking to non characters that don't do anything, the freedom of wandering around an opens space just to pad out the gameplay and make it feel like there is more to do than there really is? sure the elder scrolls games are wide open but there isn't anything to do and the storylines are always boring and dull to playthrough atleast to me.  There is barely any roleplaying in the game, you just collect loot sell it, wander around aimlessly maybe do a main quest, nothing to really drive you

Well, if the design model of DA2 is anything to go by, development of DA3 has started while DA2 was just half done, and it's planned for release during the holidays 2012... Posted Image

I think the PO sales had a lot to do with these numbers. Then after the PO people finished the game and provided their reviews...
