Is there a limit to how many you can use? This seems to suggest there is not (http://nwvault.ign.c...r.Detail&id=275) but I've seen threads that say there is a cap on it at 255.

There is a limit of 255 per tileset. A limit of 50 tilesets. So, you end up with a limit of 12,750. I do not know if you can add the 255 random screens to that total though. Don't worry about it though, if you have 12,000 areas in your mod, it is way past time to split the module into multiples anyway.
The way the engine handles tilesets is a bit complicated.
255 can be used "randomly", in other words, if you have your area set to randomly choose a load screen, it will pull from the first 255 listed in the 2da.
If you have your area set to use a specific load-screen, you can set it to either the first 255, or choose by tileset, and be limited to the 255 assigned to that tileset.
If you pick a specific load-screen, your limit is the 12,750, but it is difficult to find them all, as you have to page through and select each tileset individually, then page through each load-screen assigned to that specific tileset.
You CAN pick a different tileset to choose a load-screen from regardless of the tileset used in a specific area.
Make sense? Likely not, but that is the way it works.
So for clarity, each individual tileset can have up to 255 load-screens, and you can have an additional 255 not assigned to a specific tileset that can be used randomly.

Side note: wasn't this raised to 100 in 1.69?Bannor Bloodfist wrote...

Oops, yes they did. Tileset limits were raised to 100. But you still see multiple folks reporting errors on PW's that have reached the 50 tileset count. So, I am not sure as to what actually works on the server side. Those reported errors could be coming from folks that have not updated to 1.69 however, so I can't really comment/explain that issue.
Bioware also made the claim that load-screens above 255 will work, and they do, with the limits that I listed above. They don't work in random mode. Only the first 255 will work in a random choice on the area but you can now specify a load-screen above that number manually.

Finally, a limit that doesn't frustrate me! I'll never be able to add that many loadscreens. Seems like for organizational means it would be best to put all my new loadscreens under one or two tilesets so you can just scroll through it in one go.
As an aside, Bannor should write an Idiots Guide to NWN Custom Content for the vault.

Yep, that would work out pretty well I expect.
Heh... I could only cover tileset related stuff, and there are lots of things even there that I just don't know very well.As an aside, Bannor should write an Idiots Guide to NWN Custom Content for the vault.
Besides, there are guides, and wiki's on nwn cc, all over the place. The real issue is that the folks that work on those things won't work together and consolidate the information in such a way that it won't get lost. The privately hosted wiki's tend to die whenever the original poster gets bored with nwn or their website dies, etc... the wayback machine can only cover sites that allow it to be archived, and don't cover sites that reuire a username/password combo for access to information.

That is why I come here instead. Also because there is often conflicting replies even when my questions are already asked on the old forums.

I can't get the new loadscreen to show up, not sure what I'm doing wrong. It's the very last line of the 2da.

Nevermind, the guide I was using was misnaming the small image file.
