Has anyone else experienced a problem with Hawke's Blood Magic mode miscalculating his rate of conversion for Health to effective Mana?
I ask because I decided to experiment with Blood Magic by using a Maker's Sigh potion (I'm just now reading that there are some bugs associated with this item) and reallocating his points. I gave him the Blood Magic upgrade that improves the conversion rate and also gave him several items that further improve it. In the end he should have had something like 1:5 or 1:6 Health to Mana.
Instead he loses a variable amount of health when casting spells in Blood Magic mode, sometimes as much or MORE than the base mana cost of the spell. I tried de-equipping the Blood Magic items, thinking that one or more of them might be bugged, but that didn't help.
Merrill's Blood of the First mode works fine - her health cost remains consistent and low.

Tried this with a different save game, and the result was even worse. Lost something like 84 health for casting the Heal spell. The health loss showed as 10 and then 74. Really wondering if it isn't a Maker's Sigh bug. Maybe I can find an old save just before lvl 14 to train Blood Magic without using a potion and see.

I have the same exact bug.
However, I purchased blood magic at lvl 7 and never used a Maker's Sight on Hawke.
Everything worked fine until Act 2. I only used Maker's Sight on my companions, Fenris and Aveline.

Well, I did some testing, and realizing that what was causing the bug on my character was the "Ring of Greater Empowerment".
I unequiped all my stuff and casted a heal with blood magic and the health/mana cost was right. Then, I equiped one piece of my gear and casted a heal again, switching the equiped piece after a succesfull atempt. The bug only happened when I had that particular ring equiped.
I also equiped that ring on Merril and used some of her spells with Blood of the First and the bug happened with her.

Thanks for the tip! In my case it was the Ring of Transitional Power that was causing the bug.

ring of transitional power (the one that hits attackers with 100% damage) cause 100+ damage when casting out of BM mode. It sort of makes sense, I hope they fix that though I really like that ring.

The damage done by Blood Magic for ability costs wasn't flagged as No Redirect (which prevents the Reactive Damage property from firing). A fix for that is being QA'd.

I've had the same problem, except as a reaver instead of a blood mage.
