got everyone killed? "hold the pointless line.", goat-lizard
who made they captain? *choices not to be in their group* they're not my shepard's captain.

"yeah you guys can go follow that captain salarian if you want.... i have no part in this, they're not my captain. i'm uninvolved with them or anyone else who's so called captain. i am not obligated to take orders from salarians, or their chain of ""command"".", shepard

why do we have to leave a valuable team mate behind just for them, none of us are apart of the STG, we're not even salarians period. if salarians want to be captain, be captain of their own individual groups, be their own captains.

my shepard doesn't want any involvment with salarian militarists....."i have nothing to do with salarians, and or salarian captains. i'm currently inactive busy with earth's mission of resolving the reaper invasion. i don't take orders from salarians, none have authority over me. i do not work for them, we're from seperate factions (not rivaling factions, just not the same group).", shepard

You might hate taking orders from them, but they:
-Have intel needed to take on Saren's base
-Their drive core is the nuke that will destroy Saren's base
-They are distraction needed to take on Saren's base.
Why wouldn't you work with them?

Ah, I see your point.
And it makes sense, you should simply fly aways, as Saren's appearance on the base he established has nothing to do with your mission capturing Saren and gathering intel about the Reapers, so you should leave the Salarians there.

Or it's time go back playing Half-Life 2, it's easier to comprehend.

1.  If you remember correctly the AA guns were fixed on the normandy, so the ship couldn't have escaped if they wanted to.  Destroying the base was the only option.
2. Before Virmire, Shepard didn't even know that Reapers were sentient spaceships. Shepard didn't know Saren's plans to attack the citadel.  Shepard did know that Saren was breeding a krogan army that could have destroyed every planet in citadel space.  In short, the base was a real threat.
3.  Shepard didn't know if Saren was present at the base, but that would have been a good assumption because he actually was. Shepard had a legitimate chance of catching him there.   If he caught/killed  him then, with the knowledge that he had, he would have stopped the Saren threat right there an then.

In short I still don't see a reasonable reason why shepard shouldn't have worked with the salarians.

The Salarians are on your side and are a council race so you do have something to do with them.

And if the mission you are on is a mission for anyone it is the council's mission, not earth's.

Also if you didn't join forces you would miss out on that awesome speach lol.

Not to mention that is where you find the functioning beacon that lets Liara figure out that you need to go to Ilos. Since that is absolutely required for your mission, not working with the salerians is just a good way to fail.

Because it helps the mission be completed, and more is at stake than the life of one alliance soldier, remember, in universe, they don't think in terms of who is a main character.
