My characters do not attack the people I want them to -- why is that?

My characters have a mind of their own and do not attack the people I want them to.  For instance, when I am attacking someone and there is a red ring blinking around the dude being attacked -- when I press something like whirlwind or sythe or mighty blow, my character forgets about the one I am trying to attack and runs away and attacks someone far away?  I have programmed the tactics to attack nearest visible enemy with everything I've got -- but that doesn't seem to help.  How do I force my characters to continuously attack the same dude until it dies?

If you want to assign targets manually, don't use specific targetting tactics (use enemy : any).

Your description of the problem is weird though, if you have a target selected ("blinking red circle"), activating a talent should automatically target this one if appliable (whirlwind doesn't target anything, it just attacks wherever you are standing).

One of my tactics is nearest enemy Attack. Perhaps that somehow causes a problem, because no talent is assigned? I was not aware that Whirlwind was non-target specific. I'll keep experimenting and try your suggestion as to any enemy.

Your (the controlled character's) tactics are irrelevant, as they are entirely manual when you are in control. It'd only be relevant if you're manually assigning a target to each character, but I get the impression that's not the case here.

Noticed personally something similar, but then it has always been due to that when I click on an action with my mouse, like whirlwind for example (yes, vanguard here as well), then it got registred as a movement command instead, as if the action bar was not present. I generally notice it in time and correct it.

Oh, and regarding your second question... enemy: lowest health -> attack?

There's a sort of glitch in the game that remembers your personal last selected target for gameplay purposes, while still blinking the respective targets of each companion when you select them. Basically like this:
  • You select companion A, and click on an enemy MAGE so he attacks it.
  • You then select companion B, and see that your companion B's target is a random warrior with the red circle blinking around it. So you just use the random attack ability directly, assuming companion B will use that ability against that selected random warrior.... ->
  • What really happens, is that the game still remembers your last manually selected target was that mage. It doesn't care that you were controlling companion A when you did that. So companion B will instead run over to the mage to attack it instead.
Yes, it's highly annoying, until you get used to it.

Another alternative is, as people have said, that the tactics override your controls. Happens to me all the time, which is why I have all but the most mundanely easy tactics disabled. Basically, if you order a toon to move to spot X and release control, they will automatically revert to their tactics and do whatever it tells them to do. I think even if you have the whole party selected, only the primary companion (the one whose ability bar you have on the screen) is actually in your direct control. The others will still use their tactics whenever feasible.

Wouldn't that make them all rip up critters and work their way up?

If you want them to focus fire, it'd probably be easier to have them target the enemy your selected character is attacking.

This could lead to other problems like companions abandoning their assigned target without any real ability to split the fire power.
The best and simplest solution is to just choose the entire party (you can bind a key to that or just use Ctrl-A) and order them all to attack the same target.

Thank you all. It appears that Zan Mura has found a method to reliably reproduce the bug in the game. I tried a little last night with a tactic of enemy "any" instead of "nearest" in the hope that might be a workaround. The developers would need to know about this -- does anyone have a link to make a bug report for this type of issue?

I am having a major problem playing on nightmare with my characters switching targets when I tell them to use an ability. 3/4 of my deaths have been the result of this bug, and it happens often. Imagine trying to set up a cross-class combo in a difficult fight, and having your warrior stagger the wrong target.

Example:

Aveline is in melee with Enemy A.
Pause
Target Enemy A and tell Aveline to use shield bash.
Unpause.
Aveline runs over to Enemy B standing near my mage, and shield bashes both my mage and the wrong target, ignoring Enemy A.

This is with Default AI and all tactics off except for SELF:ANY ACTIVATE MODE tactics. I haven't got my finger on it yet, but after 20+ death due to this bug I'm pretty sure that when this bug occurs, the [wrong] target that my characters chooses is the target of another party member. And it only seems to occur when characters are told to use an ability, they don't switch targets otherwise.

Most annoying bug ever.

this is a bug and a very reproducable one. if u have ur people attack one enemy, than switch around ur party members assigning targets and then go back and use a special ability - they go and chose another target.

happens to me PERMANENTLY.
seems to happen more often on certain ability, happened all the time to my rogue - i am bashing an enemy to build up chain bonus then I click explosive strike...
and wham! off goes my rogues running for some guy 20 meters away.

so lol

I just submitted an incident report with technical support for EA to inquire how to go about making a bug report, because this issue is a major one (from my perspective). I really liked (in DA1) using enemy (nearest visible) and then just not worrying about some of the party members by letting them do their own thing.

Customer Service has already responded -- hopefully enough people will report the issue so that EA decides to include a fix in an upcoming patch. Here is a copy of the response:

I've been able to reproduce the bug every time by the following:

Tell Aveline to Shield Bach Target A.
Switch to my main character and tell him to attack Target B.

Aveline will go after Target B every time.

Aaaaaaah!! So THIS is what has been happening. I could never put my finger on why the targeting seemed so flaky!

Thank you!!
