Yeah Kirkwall was built over the Hellmouth or something.
Never occured to any of these geniuses to move all the mages out of the thin Veil zone but hey, I ain't a Templar.

**LOL** Where was Buffy the Vampire Slayer when they needed her? Well, time to head to work. I'll be back later, folks, and it's been great "talking" with ya'll about this.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what are the Forbidden Ones?

Super strong demons. GaxxKang is one of them, so is the Desire Demon you fight at the end of Forbidden Knowledge, and (I think) so is the Pride Demon boss you can fight in Act 3 that gives you the achievement.

Very little is actually known about them, just brief mentions in some of the Evil Tomes you have to destroy.

Fantastic theory, would have been even better if it had been explored in the game.

Maybe Kirkwall is where the Tevinter Mages first entered the forbidden city and has remained thin ever since, that would explain all the insanity going on there... Demons obviously played a huge part in everything that happened at kirkwall and I think it was a Pride demon that has control of Meridith through her sword (Pride demon was also in the idol). Orsinos last act also screams their influence.. He was the first enchanter, why would he ever resort to blood magic? THe amount of blood magic has to be consistent with all the demons...

Ah, I see. Gaxkang I knew about from DA:O, having beat the stuffing out him there. In DA2, however, I kept and later sold the tomes, rather than destroying them ... which is probably why I never encountered more of the Forbidden Ones.

Thanks for the backup!

That said, I think the writers did explore the issue in the game. How so, you ask? Well, they probably wanted the player to engage his/her brain a wee bit by taking the time to read the codex entries and combine them with the events that unfold within the game to piece things together and say, "Ah, ha! So that's what was going on!"

I like the OP's idea.

I failed to take into account that the place was the site of a massive war, despite a Merrill quest stating it. It just slipped my mind.

It's a good theory, OP.

And in case you have read the Enigma of Kirkwall codex yet there it is.

More like Kirkwall was built over the ancient dwarven Thaig that housed the lyrium idol... and who knows what else. Add that as another example of why Kirkwall is a magnet of all the crazy happenings in the game.
