At the start of the game, I think:

-Hawke is around 21 years old,
-Sebastian at around 26-28,
-Varric is around 27
-Fenris around 25/26 years old,
-Merril at 19,
-Isabella, I think, is in her very late 20s, maybe 28?
-Anders is difficult to age - I'm guessing anywhere between 26-31, most likely in the younger bracket due to his strong, non-compromising / changing and aggressive views,
-Aveline, as others have said, has a very grounded and mature attitude almost all of the time... it's hard to put an age on her, but I'm guessing around 28 too.

Sebastian is 28 in the act 3. When you 1st meet him, he's about 21-22.

Hawke is 20-22.
Isabella is 25ish
Aveline, around the same.

The custom Hawke looks like 40-ish. But i guess just like comic charcters, they never truly age.

I always just picture my own ages for each character- I'm close enough to thirty for it to HURT, so I imagine my characters close enough to my age for me not to feel squicky. So I imagine Fenris like...early 30's. But just so I'm not in love with a fictional video game character that's like..19.

Hawke: 21/22 (though Default Man Hawke looks older than that )

Isabela: 29/30

Anders: 27/28

My guess:-
siblings are 18 we know that as their mother says.
Hawke 20-24 as his/her mother left kirkwall 25 years before the start of the game with his/her father
Anders 30ish a lot of people have said 24/25 but if you ****** him off in the first conversation he says "Don't threaten me little girl." which makes me feel he's a good few years older than Hawke, also he doesn't come across as really young in Awakening.
Merril - Very young probably 18/19.
Isabella - mid to late 20s.
Aveline seems quite mature to a point except when trying to date Donnic - maybe 23/24
Fenris - No idea to be honest, mid 20s? It's difficult to gague
Varric seems a lot older but again hard to tell 34/35
Seb 28-30

This is a good point. He apparently calls ManHawke 'boy' in that conversation as well, at least that's what I've heard.

Default Hawke looks to me more like a 30+ year old lumberjack.
"Red Sonja" Aveline could be in the late 20s but also in the 40s.
With regard to Origins and that she is an elf Merrill could also be older than she looks.

It is harder to tell with some people then others. But I think some people here have almost the same perception on what age the characters are in the game as I do. Being in my mid 20's I actually place hawke close to that age and go from there. Hawke being 23 or 24 doesn't seem unreasonable for me (this being around the time they arrive in Kirkwall or so)

So going from that:
Hawke (My): 24 years
Bethany/Carver: 18 years
Anders: 28-32 years (hard to pin down exact)
Fenris: 28-30 years
Isabela: 30-32 years
Aveline: 25-28 years
Sebastian: 26-30 years
Merrill: 19-21 years
Varric: 25-30

I think I read somwhere that Humans, Elves and Dwarves all have comparable lifespans (note: not identical, but comparable)

Most of the companions seem to be Hawkes age or older with the exception of Merrill and the Twins.

Avaline and Isabela has both been married and gotten widowed, Isabela has also spent 10 years at sea after her marriage came to a rather abrupt end (if I recall it correct)

Anders gave me mid to high 20's vibes already in awakening, he was playful and immature for his age - but that was his character. I think he lives up to being close to 30 very well in this game though.

Sebastian was givien to the chantry somewhere in his teens. Then went on to live a wild life for what sounds like a few years before going back to the chantry and getting his priorities straightened out. which makes me think he is older then some of you other people seem to think.

Fenris, wel if fenris is younger then 28 when we first meet him i would be shocked. He jsut doesn't look like he's in his early 20's and it sounds like he's been with Danarius for a good amount of years.

Varric is really one of the hardest ones for me, I think he is older then Hawke, but hard to say how much. i would still place him in the same age range as most of the other cmpanions - since he doesn't directly feel older then any of them...

Can someone tell me why Sebastian is assumed to be 28? Was it said specifically in the game?

His grandfather gave him a promise when he was 13, and he mentions that event being before he was sent to the Chantry (albeit not how much before). Then later on in the game he is supposed to mention that its been 15 years since he was in Starkhaven.

Meaning he is at the least 13 + 15 = 28 years old at that point.

I would even add in a few years extra at that point since I think he might have been a bit older then 13 when he was sent to the chantry.

Aveline is prob abit older than most people think. In the first year at kirkwall, bethany askes why she and wesley didn't have any children and aveline says they had simply run out of time which would put her in early to mid thirties...thats what i think anyway.

The other ages make sense. Anders to me to late twenties. Varric early thirties, Merril early twenties and younger than Hawke. fenis mid to late twenties. same with seb. Islabela is late twenties i think.

I like these ages, mine might be a bit younger. I always thought of Sebastian and Hawke as largely being the same age, he was my brocicle after all.

I interpreted it that way as well. Plus even if she was in mid 30's she wouldn't technically be too old to have kids. So Wesleys death just comes across as a more believable reason for it.

I thought of that as soon as i wrote it lol. When i heard that conversation in the game thats what i assumed but it could be becasue of wesley's death as well. I still think early thirties for Aveline though becasue shes like a big sister to Hawke

This. She was sold, probably at age 13-15, then her husband killed and she inherited the ship and began her pirate adventures. This sounds reasonable.  Makes sense as well given the whole aspect tinge that the game is going for.  I doubt they would come outright and say she was that young when she was married off but I could see it being implied.

Women in their early to mid thirties are still capable of having children (and their fertility is not really decreased at that point).  If they ran out of time in that she went through menopause, that would put her in her late 40s/early 50s, which she most definitely is not.  I assumed she meant that she became a soldier, he a templar, and then he died.

Aveline looks young.  She's strong and assured, but she also rose through the ranks quickly.

Sebastian was promised to the chantry at age 13 but that's not when he went. if you recall his short story he did live a life of debauchery for a little bit and was found drunk in a tavern. i highly doubt there would be a drunk 13 year old prince in a tavern.
In act 1 the grand cleric says he has been with them for 10 years, but  by the time his last companion quest pops up he has been away from home for 15

Well Anders met the Warden Commander in Vigil's Keep a few months after killing the archdemon. He was likely in his early to mid 20s then.  I'm guessing he was 24 or 25 when he came to Kirkwall.

I'm thinking all the companions end up in their mid to late thirties by end of year 10.

Would be interesting to see a Bioware response to this from the writers and what ages they had in mind when writing for the characters.

Give or take a couple of years on all of them.

About Fenris: He was probably a slave for a few years with a the markings, and before that he was skilled enough to fight to get them and win, so I'd defnitely say he was at the very least 15 when he got them, probably more. So if he was, say, 18 ... and then a slave for a while, and then escaped, he could certainly be around 25. Somewhere. He could be older, too, but probably not younger. I'd rather see him as around 25, though.
