I have been very critical of DA2, so I figure I better add something positive once in a while.
First of all, I don't mind the silence protagonist from DA:O. The friendship/companion interaction was very deep.
I also liked ME1/2 and DA2 voiced protagonist. I enjoyed the voice acting in all 3 games, credit to the actors. ME2 delivered great depth with companions.
DA2 had some good moments, nothing as memorable I felt. Loved Fenris's voice and getting to know him some more, but I think there was 3 opportunities to "learn" about him, maybe 4. The options also felt very forced.
What I think would be awesome to include in the next installment would be multiple voices to choose from. If we got to choose different races again(Elf/Dwarf/Human) why not create a few variants of those. The lines spoken could be identical, maybe even multiple voices by 1 actor, cartoon voice actors do it all the time(Check the Simpsons). If we are forced into 1 race then this would still apply.
This way we do have an opportunity for those great campfire chats with party members such as DA:O but we also get the chance to voice our character. One thing I really missed in DA2 was the opportunity to learn about my friends who are travelling and slaughtering monsters with me. I would spend a lot of time between missions just relaxing and chatting with my party in DA:O.
Sten is a prime example, once I got enough friendship he really has some interesting history and information on himself. This was really lacking with party conversations in DA2 where you only got to learn certain parts of their character. Mostly when running a quest for them, or their opinions on quests. Sometimes Hawkes voice did not suit the situation and the type of character I wanted him to be and the responses felt very limited.
I also warmed to Allistair a lot more after learning about his times as a Templar and growing up. Getting Leliana to sing was a nice surprise.
Each voice could still be Witty/Sarcastic/Hardass if you want to keep the chat wheel but throw in a few more options like a deep male voice for a dwarf, softer "song" voice for elves, a wise warrior. I don't really play female chars so hard pressed on ideas for how you could make them sound, need some ideas here. This would be chosen at character creation and the wheel would allow for the variants.
This allows for multiple races and more replayability in the sense you can design your character to how you want to look and sound. Everytime I tried to make Hawke look like someone other than Hawke the voice ruined the immersion into the character and I would restart and use the default face as I felt it was suited better to the voice.
We had a taste of this in DA:O with the voice choices, but this was only for certain lines and not the entire game. Although don't bring back the "Can I get you a ladder so you can get off my back". I think a step forward now that we have a voiced protagonist is to give us more choice with the sound on top of all the options for how we look.
In short, more voice acting. We have made the first step with good voice acting in DA2(This is objective and not the purpose of the post)
Also, deeper party conversations. With the opportunity to understand our allies and or friends better.
