Upgraded, Tempest does 20 damage(this is only on a lv 7 mage mind you) every 2 sec, Elemetal force 2x, lasts 20 seconds over 15 meters. Mathmatically, this means that it does about only 200 damage, while Firestorm deals 39(+13) per second with a 2x elemental force, but lasts only 10 sec, while also hitting 15 meters; mathmatically, this spell hits 520. I guess my point is, is ther eany real reason to get Tempest upgraded rather than Firestorm?? Or will the numbers change as level increases and eventually make Tempest better?

Tempest doesn't cause friendly fire, every 4/2 seconds it hits everyone in the radius.

Where as Firestorm hits randomly in it's area, it's entirely possible for it not to hit a thing. It could be pretty amazing against large targets though, I'll have to try that out.

Tempest does no FF, and hit every one in its radius continually. Firestorm packs more wallop, but does do FF and doesn't necessarily hit every one in its radius.

Both great spells though.

I understand the random hit location, but more often than not you use an AoE in a high pop area, so it's GONNA hit something. And I never noticed Tempest hitting everything in the target area... *shrugs* doesn't mean it didn't. I just mean, even if a couple fireballs miss, the damage is simply so MUCH more for firestorm. I guess I'm just wondering which is better, I'm going hybrid spec is wondering

If you're going for an AoE DPS mage then there's no reason not to get both, but because Tempest non FF I get many more opportunities to use it, usually the biggest crowds are when they're all going after my warrior.

tempest, by far and away has more application opportunities and constant lightning interrupts of targets make it a better choice.

yeah, tempest is not baout the damages (though it does do nice damages to weaker mobs).

Tempest is about CC. It stuns pretty much everyone in a very large area. This is especially useful against archers.

I suppose it depends on difficulty. On nightmare tempest is better hands down.

Firestorm is beast.  It will annihlate large crowds and kock them around like rag dolls.  With proper party control, firestorm can easily be used in nightmare.

Also with fireprotection a companion could probably handle it.

Tempest can get decent dmg at higher levels.  I can get 150+ per strike maybe even 200+ depending on the enemy.  Firestorm I get 250+ on average.  Of course those are with higher magic levels and some fire dmg boosts.

I use both.  Usually drop Firestorm first and then send in Tempest with it.  That way I completely lockdown my killzone.  Those mobs at night don't stand a chance.  My party just sits back and watches.

Why chose, i get both, My fav mage build is full elemental, primal for tempest and chain lighting with some creation for Heroic aura and Glyph of paralysis. Lastly either some enthropy for debuffs or spirit for walking bomb depending on group makeup. i find it to be a good balance of offense and defense and synergies good with other NPCs (like Fenris, Avaline and Varric for CCC)
