This is suppose to be one of the experiences in your life that justify your position on the mage/templar controversy. Do you hate the mage's for allowing the crazy people to experiment in blood magic, or do you side with the Templar's because obviously the mage's need more supervision? Again it doesn't answer the question it is a judgment call depending on you the player and what you think. A simple psychological twist in the story I find shallow and unneeded. It's obvious that at the very least Templars need to be reined in to keep the balance of power between the two factions level and non-explosive, or the mages need more power to keep the playing field level.
Again this is not something initiated by Hawke - it's again circumstances that he gets the chance to react to. Ultimately making him not a hero, but a victim of circumstance.

That "brief sidequest" happens to be the last in a line of multiple sidequests that had been built up since the first act.

Just sayin'.

EDIT: Waaah, not a hero, victim of circumstance. Everyone is a victim of circumstance. The only thing that sets a hero apart from the rest is how they blasted react to circumstance.

Well then "everyone" is a hero just without circumstance!  :)

The quest made me hate mages even more, and made me downright hstile towards Merrill and Anders. The quest have as huge an impact on the story as you allow it to.

The lack of follow through was what I found lacking. Except for Aveline no one comes back on it afterwards. No companions coming to your house and asking how things are after some time has passed. I don't remember receiving letters from people about it.

After all that has led up to this point I found it was done away with rather easily. Only being brought up to prove a point by Meredith.

I definitely would have liked the opportunity to make Hawke mope over that. But I know there are people who would prefer no "forced" family business at all. Much as the romances are optional, and IIRC Gaider commented on them a year or two back saying that it's the minority that even does them. If it was up to me though, I would have had MUCH more interaction with Carver & Beth, and I'd have ended Hawke's mother's death into a fully grown party-wide dialogue thing allowing Hawke to really cry, rage etc as the player wished.

Not just that, I would have continued it with a few quests specially dedicated for that later on, allowing you to return to the subject. Such as finding a similar other mage or a student, or otherwise connected events, and expressing some real emotional reactions based on how you took mother's death initially. Naturally this too would be filled with loads and loads of party and romance banter with how your friends and rivals would react to your actions and feelings.

A parent's death is one of the most intimate losses a child can bear, regardless of age. Especially when it comes unexpectedly and in a brutal and hideous manner, like it did here. I'm glad it had that one bed-sitting scene at least, but that was nowhere *near* enough, in my opinion.

And we didn't get the chance to hoover up the loot after, did anybody else think about moving her jaw and saying. "Sorry hawke it's my fault carvery died because I didn't move my fat arse when that ogre passed us on his morning run, i'm just stupid, I dragged you away from ferelden against your will and i'm a really slow letter writer".

Ha ha at last I can go back home to ferelden, all these needy incompetent arses have croaked and thank maker allmighty i'm free at last.

No just me, ah well.

That, and the cheesy zoom-in on Hawke's face when you first see it's Hawke's mother. The 8O face killed the moment more than anything, IMO.

Exactly.  Supercheese.

It was the most shocking part of the game for me. I was pretty confident I was going to pull off the heroic rescue up until I saw the being from behind and immediately guessed that she was a goner.

The scene needed Quentin to stay alive after the battle so Hawke could extract terrible revenge on him.
Beatings, magic fireball to the crotch, murder knife, Fenris' fist o' doom. Anything!

Sloooooowly applied murder knife. Thoguh i would've wanted same for Howe in Origins if playing with the noble.

All of your companions offer their condolences, if you just talk to them while adventuring.

I also want him kept alive so that I could stare into his eyes, say thank you and slip him ten sovereigns for a job well done.

I like that.  I'd also like the option to keep mother's head.  Maybe put it above the fireplace.
