Again this is not something initiated by Hawke - it's again circumstances that he gets the chance to react to. Ultimately making him not a hero, but a victim of circumstance.

Just sayin'.
EDIT: Waaah, not a hero, victim of circumstance. Everyone is a victim of circumstance. The only thing that sets a hero apart from the rest is how they blasted react to circumstance.

That "brief sidequest" happens to be the last in a line of multiple sidequests that had been built up since the first act.

Well then "everyone" is a hero just without circumstance!

After all that has led up to this point I found it was done away with rather easily. Only being brought up to prove a point by Meredith.

Not just that, I would have continued it with a few quests specially dedicated for that later on, allowing you to return to the subject. Such as finding a similar other mage or a student, or otherwise connected events, and expressing some real emotional reactions based on how you took mother's death initially. Naturally this too would be filled with loads and loads of party and romance banter with how your friends and rivals would react to your actions and feelings.
A parent's death is one of the most intimate losses a child can bear, regardless of age. Especially when it comes unexpectedly and in a brutal and hideous manner, like it did here. I'm glad it had that one bed-sitting scene at least, but that was nowhere *near* enough, in my opinion.

That, and the cheesy zoom-in on Hawke's face when you first see it's Hawke's mother. The 8O face killed the moment more than anything, IMO.
Exactly. Supercheese.

The scene needed Quentin to stay alive after the battle so Hawke could extract terrible revenge on him.
Beatings, magic fireball to the crotch, murder knife, Fenris' fist o' doom. Anything!
Sloooooowly applied murder knife. Thoguh i would've wanted same for Howe in Origins if playing with the noble.

All of your companions offer their condolences, if you just talk to them while adventuring.Poison_Berrie wrote...
The lack of follow through was what I found lacking. Except for Aveline no one comes back on it afterwards. No companions coming to your house and asking how things are after some time has passed. I don't remember receiving letters from people about it.
After all that has led up to this point I found it was done away with rather easily. Only being brought up to prove a point by Meredith.

I also want him kept alive so that I could stare into his eyes, say thank you and slip him ten sovereigns for a job well done.
I like that. I'd also like the option to keep mother's head. Maybe put it above the fireplace.
