Is there any effect for not following the Magistrate's Orders later on? What effect?

There is no effect, besides not getting paid.

...and now you've lit the fires of another bland "illusion of choice" debate : P

Bring Fenris if you want to kill the Magistrate's son.

The only effect is that you get a letter from the rescued girl's father in some later Act. He thanks you and says that you inspired the girl in that she wants to be like you.

She joins the guard, and you can encounter her later in the game and if Aveline is in your party she'll interact with her. I'm not sure if that's dependant on killing the guy, though.

Yep, this is about all you get.

So if you don't kill him, would the girl still become a guard? What's the alternative?

If you arrest him, his father covers up the whole story and you hear about dead elven children in the second act.

Ouch...glad I didn't spare him then. Too bad, then it seems killing him is clearly the better alternative. I would have been better to see him reformed imho.

I thought this quest was a golden opportunity to have some real delayed consequences. I took a good long time on what to do with the kid, but ended up having Fenris kill him. But I was totally expecting that Magistrate to come back in some later act to screw over Hawke somehow as a result of going against him. Instead he just stormed off, with nothing ever coming from that. Disappointing.

I know, I was waiting for something to happen too.   The guards who were waiting outside that cave made crossing the will of the Magistrate sound so ominous.   I started worrying about Leandra and Bethany down in Lowtown, or maybe Aveline being fired or put on some dangerous patrol where she would be ambushed.

But nothing happened  -_-

Killing him gave me +15 friendship with Isabela, which was good as I was trying to win her over and be a goody-goody at the same time. (If killing a child-murderer isn't the right thing to do I don't know what is).
And you don't need Fenris, you can do it yourself.

Nearly everybody will object if you let him go. Nobody will object if you kill him. Varric, Aveline, Merrill and Isabela even get Friendship Points.

I was surprised by Aveline's reaction. I figured that she would have some difficulty with me taking the law into my own hands or actually Fenris' hand.

That guy murders children. I wasn't that surprised that even Aveline supported my act of... lynch law. Particularly after he made it clear that his father won't do **** about it.

Also, you still receive a letter from the girl's father, in which he says (paraphrased) that she's terrified of all humans now.

I was surprised at Aveline's reaction...at first. In general, going with the lay of the law is the way to build friendship with the big girl. However, even she clearly sees that the law isn't going to work this time. The insane serial killer's dad is the magistrate that hired you to bring this sicko in alive. Obviously he's going to continue to shield his son from the law. Some people, as she says, are simply broken.

And this is why I love the way Aveline is written. She trips up occasionally, but when it comes to following the law or doing the right thing...

I am thinking of Rivalmancing Isabela and sadly, sparing him is the biggest chuck of Rivalry you can get for her in Act 1. Kinda sucks, since he deserves to die.

I somehow missed this quest in the first play through. I took it in the second, and happily killed the guy. So far all I've noticed is that the magistrate grumbles and disappears.
