Exactly. And even if they want to blame eveything on the lead writer, then why only Mac Walters? Both Walters and Karpyshyn are credited as lead writer.didymos1120 wrote...

Forgot to say earlier, but Mac mentioned he wrote Wrex and Garrus in ME1. That's aces in my book.
Well maybe he forgot to mention he wrote ME2's ridiculously horrible story. Not an ace in my book.

Um, no he didn't. He was part of writing it. So were Casey Hudson, Preston Watamaniuk, Drew Karpyshyn, and the entire writing team. Lead Writer does not mean "Guy/Gal who gets to decide what the game is going to be about."

Thank you for some sensibility and class. I understand people having objections to narrative and design decisions, but to scapegoat one guy is totally incorrect and pointless. I wasn't even to waste my time responding to these opinions, but I will respond to and commend your sensible comment.
Actually, I just now realized I tacitly agreed with the "horrible story" part by not objecting to it. I don't.
No problem with that, as long as you don't whine or scapegoat.

Well, regardless, I don't actually have any major issues with the ME2 story.

IGN: How much of the writing comes from one person, and how much is a collaborative effort?
Drew Karpyshyn: At BioWare the process is a combination of collaborative feedback and individual effort. The writers (and other key people, such as the Project Director and the Lead Designer) constantly discuss the overall story line. But each individual writer is assigned sections of the game to write. For Mass Effect, each planet has one primary writer who is responsible for the majority of writing on that world. However, all the writers review each other's work to offer suggestions and criticism, and as Lead Writer I also have to make sure there is a consistency of style across all the various levels. So on the one hand it's very individual - you write what you think works for your own areas - but on the other hand it's a very collaborative process, as everything you do has to fit in with the rest of the team and the larger overall story.
So, if you're wondering who to blame if you didn't like the story in either game, the answer is basically "Everybody."

Personally- I didn't find the ME2 story bad at all... However, I was dissapointed with it. The reason is that, although it's a good story, it is essentially a subplot to the greater story ("The Reapers are coming!").
Also I have been playing ME2 again lately (Need to get myself some "perfect save games" ready for ME3:p), and yesterday I played through Mordin's loyalty mission- which is just so incredibly awesome. I don't know who wrote Mordin or Legion, but whoever it was that did write them- you're awesome.

Not sure why you'd expect it to be anything other than that though. It's the middle part of a trilogy about, well, pretty much the fact that "the Reapers are coming!" They were never gonna be showing up en masse until ME3, so even if ME2 had a completely different central plotline, it still would have been "essentially a subplot to the greater story". It just would have been about some other Reaper scheme that didn't involve them actually reaping the entire galaxy, and it still would have ended on a "We haven't actually stopped them for reals or anything, and they'll be here real soon now..." note.

It could've still been more connected to the main plot- finding out more about the reapers, the keepers, the citadel- or various other topics. Even with the collectors I feel they could've done a better job tying them to the reapers. Instead the collector subplot stands almost entirely separate from the reaper main plot, the only connections are "technology" and "buried in the data"
Again though, despite my dissapointment the game did have a lot of good going for it also- including parts of he story.

More so than the collectors being genetically modified by the reapers, them making a human reaper, them being "posessed" in-battle by a reaper, a member of your team (Legion) asking your help to fight the influence of the reapers over his people and your attempts to reach the collectors resulting in you travelling inside and destroying a sleeping/dead...reaper. To be honest I found the whole collector thing interesting as it added the whole theme of what could happen to humanity in the game should you fail on your mission.
Reapers? Reapers!

If anything I found the "Geth divided" thing annoying, it felt like they were going back on previous decisions about the geth. With that said though, Legion is very awesome in terms of character- so I can't complain too much about that.
Collectors being genetically modified was a cop-out to connect it to the story somehow. Them making a "human reaper" was just annoying, that thing looked nothing like a reaper- maybe if they'd further detailed it and filled in more details it could've worked.
I agree with your last statement, it is interesting in the light that it gives you an idea of what could happen if you fail-however I think they did not put a whole lot of emphasis on that aspect. Not once does an npc or partymember comment on how that could happen to us or something alike (It could've been a solid story hook if better emphasized).
Again though, I feel I have to emphasize that I do not find it a bad story on the whole, I just wish it would've been more intergrated / had more perspective towards the backstory.

I had quite a good question, too bad it wasn't accepted.
Why is Bioware able to make a massive gaming and comic franchise, but unable to make a webcast that doesn't crash every 5 minutes?
