May I ask the point of your question OP? Are you trying to say that there is a reason companies stick to the tried and try hero saves the world or that it's a refreshing change of pace?

I'm just trying to put some context around the DA2 story.

Last game I played that was not "save the world" Atelier Rorona, not even a threat. The enemy in that game was time and trying to keep your shop open while making a name for yourself in town, and maybe pursuing a "friendship".

I'm playing Trinity at the moment I'm not sure if that qualifies yet. There is no world saving at the moment, but lot's of rumours so It may turn out to be one those. I'm just a Gladiator out for revenge right now.

Dead Space, Civilizations (foremostly because it has no plot and I am doing my good share of destroying worlds), X³ Terran Conflict (though you come to save a world, but that doesn't count on interstellar levels), Wing Commander Prophecy and many more.

Seriously I would say... NWN2 - Mask of The Betrayer

Saving the world is... an option but becoming a spirit eater and went against the gods was more fun XD

I forgot about that one. The only decent thing about nwn2. (the main nwn2 story sucked, and soz was horrible)

Good VO, and was fun..

and to you others, dirty jade empire spoilers! lol.

Most Save the world RPG the Player is just trying to save their little peice of the world, saving the rest is just a by product.

Clearly the best RPG story is found in Recettear.

The point isn't to save the world, it's so you don't have to end up in a box.

Shepard just loves to shoot stuff.

It's not Shepard's fault that the said stuff getting obliterated are usually after the galaxy.

The only game that I've played that wasn't a save the world thing was I think Mask of the Betrayer. I really can't decide how I feel about whole "save the world/not save the world" thing. *shrugs* I'm still deciding.=]

Hmmm. Probably Dead Rising 2. Was already too late to save the world. Just trying to save my daughter. Mafia 2 before that. Just trying to save enough money to buy a home in the suburbs. (which didn't work out too well)

Sarin made shep look bad on Eden Prime, it was all about payback.

Well, that's more practical than saving the world. I mean, you need to save the world again and again and again, sooner or later the would-be hero will screw up so why bother? Rather use your time to make your life happier,  for example, by not having to live in a box

I've played fewer games with a plot to save the world than not. I think the initial assumption is somewhat flawed. The save the world plot is probably most common in RPGs, but even Fallout: New Vegas avoided it.

New releases I've played without it recently have included Dead Space 2 and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.  An argument with regards to Dawn of War 2: Retribution can be made either way.  Older games I've played recently without it included Mount & Blade: Warband.

Games that did include it I've played recently are Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Divinity 2: DKS.  At least I think DKS did.  I was barely paying attention.

I still don't know why, as I don't speak Russian.

Too bad you couldn't enable subtitles, I preferred the russian VO but couldn't stand not knowing what they said.
And you're right about the plot (as far as I can remember, there were some stuff about the nature of the zone, but no world-saving).

See title. It means the last game before DA2 for the pedantic.

The title that kinda springs to mind here ( and I myself admit this one needs some room to breathe as it were )

Final Fantasy 6

The entire point of this adventure was never to save the world. It was stopping the empire, geshtel  ( spelling ) was in a mad race to finish his claim to glory by acquiring "espers" to infuse his warriors with "magic" . While he wanted to rule the world he, at no point in time , actually attacked the world itself. Now enter Kefka, the easily most sadistic, corruptable, insane and chaotic character in the entire FF universe. Originally was sent to root-out these rebellious factions called returners  ( I think ) . Along the way , betrays Geshtal , blows the alignment of the goddess statutes out of wack creating ( one of the best scenes in FF history and RPG history )a MASSIVE  global destruction as a result of the imbalance. At this point the characters ( main story players ) re-group  to try to find and kill Kefka so he does not do more damage and so forth. But even at the end of the game the motive was not to save the world, but to more or less stop Kefka's domination of the world.

I'm wondering if I should throw FFX into that catagory. You start of out to save the world, then you change your mind and save the girl. Ultimately destroying the established order if not the actual world world.

Persona 3, Persona 4, Pokemymon, Harvest Moon games, Resonance of Fate, Fallout 3, Valkyria Chronicles etc etc...

And Planescape: Torment isn't about "saving the world" as I remember it. It's about rediscovering who you are.

There's plenty in other words. A lot more do have the "saving the world" theme but I like both, as long as it's well done.

EDIT: Actually, saying "both" feels wrong. I want to say that I like ANY story that is well written and executed.

Wait...what.

Persona 3 was about saving the world from Nyx. It's never outright said "We have to save the world!" but your kind of trying to stop Nyx from destroying all of human kind's will to live.

Viva Piñata, Bulletstorm, Red Dead Redemption...

What's wrong with "Saving the world" anyway?
The story itself is not important, the way you tell the story is what matters.

Nothing feels more MANLY/WOMANLY than saving the world and getting laid afterwards.

What, I had to say it.

Wow, you're quite patient: I'm Russian myself and I couldn't stomach 5 minutes of this awful game. A lot of people who played it claimed it has no real story at all though.

And on topic - God of War 3: you destroy the world. Completely.
