I would say Fallout New Vegas or Red Dead Redemption. I thought RDR did a really great job of making me care about Marston's family, especially his son.

In fact, FFXII didn't really have a "save the world" plot that was overt at all. It was much more complex than that. It took many turns and eventually sort of turned into that, but it was actually never fully made clear that there was an enormous threat to the whole world that needed to be vanquished. It was more intricate. The nethicite posed such a threat in the wrong hands, but Ashe's motivations for gaining it's power were very two sided up until the very end.
I really loved FFXII's story. The hunts in the game distracted you from it a lot, but if you play the game and ignore the very time consuming hunts, you'll realize that the plot was very well thought out and cool.
I don't think a lot of people realise how untypical of FF's FFXII is. It's "funny" in a way, one of the biggest complaints was it was so non linear that you lose track of what you are supposed to be doing. The bonus areas were some of my favourites in an FF game. Plays like Origins too.

Most FF's have some sort of political/social theme in the plot. Overcoming an established order is almost an FF staple.

Was playing Vampire: Bloodlines today, and in truth most games I play don't have a "save the world" plot, its mostly BW games that does in my catalogue (and I prefer it when they don't, its too grandiose and breaks immersion most of the time).

erm even DA:O doesn't encompass the entire planet does it? just Thedas... or am I mistaken. If I am then my choice would be Fallout New Vegas. I killed them all and took it for myself. *cue evil laugh*

Divinity 2: Ego Draconis. Or at least I think it was not about saving the world.

Portal. Which in lieu of a "save the world" plot had a STRONG central antagonist. Something which DA:2 lacks.

Assuming only RPG and that "Save the village" equates to "Save the world", then the last one completed was Curse of the Azure Bonds - the goal is to free your party from the 5 Azure tatoos that were put on the party and can compell them to act in certain ways.
