The Aveline in my party had 1000 armor, i decided to replace her current +50 armor shield with one that adds +70 her armor jumped up to 1020. ided i wanted to replace that shied with one that added =65 armor but added 45 health, her armor jumped up to 1075. I thought this was strange so i replaced her shield with the old +70 her armor rating again jumped up, this time to 1145, i repeated this process til i had over 4000 armor or 99% damage reduction. This doesnt seem right. Dont get me wrong i like having an invincible tank in my party, but not this way.

Ditto- I'm having the exact same problem, though my Aveline is now up to 100% Damage reduction with 1,180. I didn't notice before- I had her equipped with Ser Wesley's Shield (by default, of course), followed by some small wooden buckler, followed by "The Bann's Backhouse Door," followed by "The Lion of Orlais." Each time a shield is removed, the full armor value of the shield isn't removed, instead, it only subtracts 38 for an unequip of The Bann's Backhouse Door (52.78% of its total 72 armor) and only removing 45 armor when unequipping the Lion of Orlais (about 57% of the Lion's 79 armor). When the shield is re-equipped, or another shield is equipped in its stead, the total armor rating is added in.
For example, if her armor rating was 179 with the Lion of Orlais equipped, then removing the Lion of Orlais shield (with an armor rating of 79) should take her armor rating back to 100. After removal, were we to re-equip the Lion of Orlais shield, we would expect her armor to return to 179. Should we again remove the shield, she'd be back to 100. Re-Equip it again? Should go back to 179. Instead, however, Aveline's her armor rating in this hypothetical isn't dropped to 100 after removing the Lion of Orlais shield. Rather than taking the full 79 away, she only loses 45 armor, meaning that after removing the Lion of Orlais shield, her armor rating is higher than it was previously, without any shield equipped, leaving her with 134 armor instead of 100. However, if we re-equip the Lion of Orlais (or any other shield) after doing this, then that shield's armor rating will be added to the 134 in it's entirety. If we're simply unequipping and re-equipping the Lion of Orlais shield over and over again, thanks to the glitch in Aveline's armor class, she'll get a permanent +34 boost in armor rating each time the shield is removed.
This makes all the time I put into making her my party tank absolutely wasted, as now, the game is ruined for me if she's in combat. Because of this glitch, I essentially discovered that I've been cheating without realizing it (by never looking at her actual armor rating until now, noticing that hits doing 40 dmg to the rest of my party weren't even denting her chestplate.
How do we fix this?

This is a known issue that is being looked in to for Patch 1. It also affects Hawke if you're a sword and board warrior.
