For his duel with you.

Just turn on god mode during that fight, would be easier than 2 hours worth of digging through scripts and files to make changes for just 1 fight.

My healer spec mage tore him up, seriously. Just stay out of his path when he charges, and hit him with ice spells to slow him down.

Kite him and summon your dog. Don't let him charge you. There are two well placed pillars that may be used for that purpose. Anything that will interrupt him, stun him or slow him is very handy.

He only has what, two potions?
You have twenty.
I didn't hear the Arishok complain as I peppered him with arrows.

The point is to make it less tedious. I agree, it's easy enough if you know what you're doing, I just don't particularly enjoy the extra time running in circles when he drinks potions.

I just turned it down to casual in my second playthrough and ran around like an arse between uses of whatever spell it is that encases his lower body in stone. On the bright side, not once did he complain about chasing me in circles. :)

Depends on the difficulty. It's 3 on hard and more on nightmare from what i've read. May be less on easier levels.

My understanding from playing with it is that the potion is just a matter of cooldown.  It's marked as an ability, not an item, and altering the CD seems to have a direct effect on how many an enemy uses.  I could be wrong as I can't see the scripts, but my mod definitely stops their use ;)

Awesome, thanks!  Too many little ways in which fights were made longer and more annoying without being more tactical, IMO.  If for some reason I decide I want most enemies being able to use their potions (it just seems an especially tricksy thing for a Qunari to do during a duel, even if you're doing it yourself), can I just move the file in and out of the relevant folder as appropriate?

Yep! I only wanted it for one fight, myself (Darn Tranquility hunter/assassin - later game, my builds save me ;P )

I think there's more to it -- during my fight the potion use would trigger every time at ~half health bringing him back to 3/4th or so. But after 3 times he wouldn't use the potions anymore even though i was fighting him pretty much with just autoattack and my damage output definitely didn't get any higher after 3rd potion, so it should be easily off the cooldown again.

Suspect there's counter on how many times it can be used, and the cooldown is there since it's mechanics that's shared with other NPCs, and having the cooldown allows to burn these NPCs down with group before they can heal themselves again. If one is coordinated enough to pull that off.

He has three, I think, as both times I fought him on different difficulties, he only drank three. The dog helps A LOT. And even if you're a healer spec, you still have Mind Blast (unless you're a masochist), and it works wonders against him.

I didn't upgrade my mind blast :/ so it had only the aggro reduction component and that's useless when i was the only one in the fight (not using the dog, either)

edit: as for is it fair for Arishok to use potions when Hawke is using them too... well my Hawke had 175 hp total, while a hit for 450+ would barely dent Arishok's bar at all Posted Image
