he's an amazing ally, but there is not a single companion that is necisary to win.
but don't go without a rouge, traps, chests, the added aggro management are just too good.

My next game I do plan on trying him out. I hear only good things about him.

My first, as I rogue I didn't really need him for.
When I played a warrior he was alright for crowd control.
And as a mage, I just went with Isabela. She gets things done.
Varric's one of my favorite characters, but he isn't very useful. He can pick up the slack for CC, & AoE, but he'll pale in comparison to a mage. If you don't like Isabela though, & you're not a rogue it doesn't hurt to have a guy who opens stuff.
Really, if he didn't have some of the best dialog in the game, I wouldn't even bother with him.

The only reason I've been use Varric is because of the Sebastian friendship bug, so I switch between the two, but I find Sebastian more useful.

How the hell is Varric gonna tell your story if he's never in it?
He watched the movie.

It's just a good combination. He fits into every party and provided very good ranged damage so he doesn't get in the way either.

I just wish he had a bard buff like leliana did, so at least I would always want him around.

Varric is good for lockpicking and damage, but I do get sick of him being mauled by hostiles. Towards the end of the game I usually stop bringing varric as I don't need any more gold.

Varric shouldn't be getting mauled, as he basically has no use for dexterity. Cunning to 40 asap to handle all locks and traps, and then almost all in to consitutions, with a bit here and there into willpower until you feel he can least, and then work on his dexterity. He gets an obscene amount of damage just from Bianca and attack speed buffs, and a rather generous amount of crit as well. Just keep an eye twoards +attack accessories.

Maybe in lower difficulties she's a good off tank, but in nightmare having one melee enemy after her is too much, you have to constantly manually control her to dodge melee attacks, with enemies dealing a lot of damage in nightmare any hit will either stagger her or knock her onto her arse.
Considering a large part of Rogues is their DPS, you're wasting a lot of her potential because you're moving rather than attacking.
So let's say you work at keeping her threat level under control and use her for single target DPS (which is what I'm doing), well Varric's personal tree also focus' on SDPS.
I can't really think of a gameplay reason to use her over Varric and I'm really trying to, I've had her in my party most of the game and I'm determined to finish it with my current line up.
I also think Varric has far more interesting dialogue, "You have sanctioned frolicking areas?" was genuinely funny.

Personally, I use Varric in most of my games, mostly just because I get him early on so you can customize him most since you can only use Maker's Sighs on Hawke. But if nothing else, he's GREAT for party banter, especially with Isibela and Merrill.
You can use the sighs on party members.

Story-wise however, I like having Varric along simply for his banter and ability to talk you out of situations. I'd recommend to play at least one play through with him in your party at practically all times simply because he's fun to have around. Other than that there's no need for him particularly, like every companion.

I use him as my token Rogue on my Mage and Warrior playthroughs. I didn't use him at all on my 2 Rogue playthroughs, as others have said there isn't any point to having 2 Rogues in the party.
Well you could have one focusing on DPS and another focusing on the utility talents. Fenris to tank and use AoE to kill the hordes of weaker enemies, a DPS specialising Varric or DW Hawk Rogue to concentrate on Assassins/Mages/Commanders, a healer plus CC mage and a rogue for threat management, CC and some more SDPS to take down boss' even quicker.

I've been using Isabella, but I'm regretting it, the amount of micro-management she requires on nightmare is absurd, Varric requires less baby-sitting, mostly because he's ranged so you have a lot more breathing room to drop his threat.

This was my experience as well. I just used her to run in, use explosive shot on a staggered target, then run out.

Other than that I have never used him since I'm playing a Rogue Hawke and it's more helpful to have 2 mages with me to set up BRITTLE ccc combos and I use Fenris as my tank.
