I have to 'interact' with the tree in the alienage, how do I do that?

Should be something you can see to click on. Once you do it starts a dialong with the elf standing there. Look on the side of the tree that faces Merril's home.

In Act 2 (or was it 3) you will get a quest to See Gemlan at his house. That is the start of the quest.

There's actually a letter on his desk that you need to read while you're there, that triggers it.
