I've been reading certain topics and I've come to formulate my own idea about whats going on and what happened in Kirkwall. Is there a specified place where the old gods were corrupted? From what I see the Tevinter Mages could have easily entered the fade from Kirkwall and permanently altered the vaill in that area. This added to all the deaths and wars happened must have severly thinned the veil... How else were there so many blood mages? What about the Pride Demons appearing during the last straw? This thin area led to anyone who moved there being corrupted. Notice how most people in Kirkwall tend to keep to themselves and hate outsiders like Fereldens. Many of the citizens were drove to madeness by things happeneing in Kirkwall. Also, during the final battle all those demons were unleashed, they saw the perfect opportunity to get what they wanted.. Freedom now that the rest of Kirkwall was in chaos.

The second part would be what I think about the Idol. Obviously it is evil , but it didn't match the power of the Demons. Bertrand wasn't corrupted by Anger, Desire, Sloth, or Pride, he went completely insane! I think the idol has something to do with the Arch Demon and I'll even go far enough to say that its a Manifestation of an old Gods soul and being beneath Kirkwall was no accident...

Notice how Kirkwall also happens to be in the Center of Thedas, what if this war was planned by the Idol to unleash this demons and destroy the people of Ferelden to weaken them for the next blight? Also, the presence of chantry agent and the gray warden echo sinister going ons as well... Far beyond just the mage and templar war.

Just some thoughts, curious what everyone else thinks.

Ya I figured that's what it was, since you seem to know what you're talking about with everything else. I have no doubt that Kirkwall has something to do with the creation of evil. Maybe fate brought Hawke there for more than just saving the city. Maybe something even bigger then mages V templars is about to happen, springing first out of Kirkwall.

I bet its worse then just an Arch Demon... And that idol happens to be its soul or something like that. A super arch demon? Ha ha, something like that.

Of course Flemeth has to be connected to all this... Shes obviously unique maybe shes part of this super evil but shes not at her full strength yet.. Maybe this idol, morrigans child, and something else have to do with restoring her? If she does have anything to do with the evil happenings and everything... She was killing darkspawn at the start of DA2. Shes been around for a long, long time.

 Dear OP.

Let me spoil your happiness by pointing out that all of the description of Bllod magic in DA2 is simply lore r*pe. Almost the entire lore has been retconned.

I didn't say anything about Blood Magic per se just that it was the demons influence that lead to all the blood mages.

*****MAJOR SPOILERS below about DA in general and Minor spoilers for the game:*****

But in this case they are tied. The demon(ess) below Kirkwall that was fed all the blood is one of the three Forbidden Ones. They taught Blood Magic to Tevinter magisters according to New lore. Originally this was ascribed to Old Gods. Also, Xebenkeck summon's abominations. you can't SUMMON them.

EDIT: There is NO way in Fade you should be able to defeat her if she is what the lore claims to be. It is stupid and idiotic that a minor fldgeling can defeat something that the Old Tevinter magisters learned from. Purely ridiculous.

But she wasn't an old god she was influenced by the blade by the old gods soul similar to how Frodo was corrupted... :P
