Just a simple question(s) about Anders

The cheeky mage from Awakening, who im sure most people love, i know i do, he is witty, funny, charming, all round, imo a great companion
In DA2 though he was a bit different, serious, sometimes a bit depressing, angry generally most of the time,
I don't understand why they couldnt of kept Anders the same happy self as he was in awakening in this game and had another angry mage or companion instead, my guess is that Bioware was going for a darker theme but wanted to use a character we already love

 (Awakening spoiler)
I did get a tad confused with awakening ending if you had completed his personal quest (which isnt hard tbh) it says he leaves the Grey Wardens for a few months and then returns to stay, saying that he is home, which is fair enough.

But in the case of DA2 he just left and that was it Posted Image
My final question is why even though you change the characters personality why do you have to change the VA, originally it was Greg Ellis who i think is a fantastic actor, but for some reason they used Adam Howden, i have nothing against him, but they could afford Greg Ellis (as evidence of Alistair, Cullen and extras) so why not carry on using him for the character he originally voiced?

Last but not least, unrelated to Anders, i hope that if there is another DA game  (and by going from the ending of DA2 they will be, or i hope so ) i hope Bioware choses to add the risk of companions potentially dying if certain requirements are not met, or kill them off anyway (all the more darker should it be someone we care about, (but dont touch leliana, she rules Posted Image)) similar to mass effect with the potental of companions dying

would just like to clarify none of this is a flame or a rant, just a question Posted Image

Imo if he was still the carefree mage from Awakenings it would have felt...odd. He's not the same. He's not even fully human anymore..and I liked seeing his character grow more vs. some random mage. Would not have had quite the same emotional impact imo.

The rest of your points I don't disagree with :P

your Companions die in DA 2 as well.

Anders, you can kill him.

Fenris, Mirrell can be killed in the last battle

you can turn Isabella over to Arishok, she probably got executed or turn in the mindless hard laborer.

Both of your siblings can be killed, on several occasion.

So yeah.... If you're not careful, they'll die on you.

As for Anders, I think he has personality issue long before Justice possessed him. He escaped the circle 7 times, talking about dedication. And he let a spirit possess him, I'd be like "Anders, What the %&$# are you thinking?! that's by definition an abomination without looking like ugly meatball".

But I like him when he's sweet and funny and cat loving, and I like when he's crazy and angry and desperate.

Why Anders had a voice actor change: It's the same reason they had Victoria Kruger take over for Isabela. They didn't want anyone getting confused between the companions and the other characters that the previous voice actors voiced, so they purposely changed them up.

Why Anders is different this time around: Maybe it's because he bonded with Justice. Maybe it's because he had some sort of big epiphany after the events of Awakening. The lead writer, David Gaider, said that they need a hook and a character for writing. Obviously, Anders' whole purpose in DA2 was to force the beginning of the mage/templar war (like Morrigan's whole purpose in DA1 was for the dark ritual). Rather than fill it a wholly new character, they decided to repurpose Anders into this role because they saw that, should he turn to the darker side, it might be more interesting. Also, different writers on Anders' character.

I wouldn't say I like Anders personally, but I like to dislike him, which makes him memorable anyway.

Edit: You can kill Anders and Fenris. If you side with the templars and let Anders go, he attacks you later and you kill him anyway. Fenris sides with the templars unless you have sufficient friendship or rivalry. If you hand Isabela over to the Arishok, she just escapes again (and steals the tome again) shortly afterwards anyway. I'm not sure whether you can kill Merrill, I'm pretty sure she stays with you regardless.

He may have returned to the Wardens after our Warden disappears, and is then asked to get rid of Ser-Pounce-a-Lot?

As for the voice actor. The one who played Anders also played Cullen in Origins and Awakening. It would probably be very odd if you have Anders in your party while talking to Cullen and have them sound exactly alike.

Ah fair enough good points there, didnt know about all those people able to die, i didnt lose a companion, save sebastion who got annoyed after i refused to kill anders and he said he would bring and army, but he was just an extra for me :-p

I think what i meant when i said about the companions dying as in an uncontrolled way killed by a boss, swarm of enemys etc, not by your own hhands or leaving, that said ive just heard about the siblings in deep roads so maybe that is the bit im missing :-p

edit: in regards to having the same VA voice multiple characters they still kept Greg Ellis for Alistair when he has been in both, and in awakening, even talks to Anders (or just in the same convo) it seemed alright to me

My feelings for a lot of DA2 NPCs. I won't want them as my friends, but I like them as well developed characters with depth and flaws.
