Does anyone think that they should setup an ordinary name that can be spoken in the next DA, instead of giving you the choice to name them yourself?

This is only applicable if they don't continue with either Hawke or the Warden in the next game, but is there much point to naming your own character. The only use I see is  being able to tell the difference between the saves.

I just refer to all my characters as Hawke, and have actually forgotten all the names I have given them. In game your only ever called Hawke, and the name you made is only on show above the experience bar ,on the 360 anyway. Being able to name your character works better if your character can't talk in my opinion.

I always think of them as Jonah Shephard and Juno Hawke, even if NPCs don't call them that.

No. I want to play my own character, not Bioware's character.

What's in a name? The name has nothing to do with the personality. I say give the main character a name. I can roleplay Garrett Hawke as easily as I can roleplay _____ Hawke. The fact that a set name means NPCs can actually address me by first name, rather than by surname, race, or title means the game will be all the more immersive and personal.

I think you it should remain optional. My character is called Spar Hawke which is a reference to a character in a book my Hawke acts allot like. It makes it easier to think of what my character would do. It furthermore doesn't bother me when they call me with my last name in either the dragon age or mass effect series. I even prefer it to the serah constantly.

It is yet one more nail in the coffin for customization of characters as if enoughcustomization were not stripped from the game already.

A canon first name isn't necessary, but it is nice the PC does some sort of form of address. Can be a last name, like Shepard and Hawke, or a title, like Warden and Champion. Older games didn't do this as much, which led to awkward dialogue. KotOR and Jade Empire had Revan and Spirit Monk, respectively, but those names/titles weren't revealed until the last third or so of the game, making everyone else call the PC "you" all the time.

I wouldn't really mind, seeing as I generally go for a good story over customisation. But its kind of unnecessary. "Hawke" worked really well for DA2, I thought.

Hawke's first name appears in the various codexes and letters people send you

Having their own name helps me keep them as seperate people when I'm replaying the game.
Though it's a little odd that Merrill says "I love Hawke" rather than "I love CHARNAME"

Well, at that point Hawke has become the nickname of the character in addition to the last name. It is not exactly uncommon amongst friends to refer to eachother by a nickname, in particular if the first name is rather common.

I thought about this. It's weird calling your brother and sister Carver and Bethany respectively and yet they call you brother or sister because you don't have a real first name. Having one set name can add a lot I feel to relationships and things. But at the same time, I didn't like Garrett Hawke or Marion Hawke. I'm torn.

No, absolutely not. I like being able to name my characters. Being called by a nickname, a title or last name doesn't bother me in the least.

It's a small thing, but I like to name my own character even if it's never used. I have some old standard RPG names I like to use, which revives some awesome memories of times past playing AD&D, Vampire, Warhammer RPG and many more.

I hate it when they add a fixed surname it automatically distances me from the char i'm playing.

So no whole name decided up front is huge NO for me.

I wouldn't mind having all the NPC's call me by my first name either. Perhaps a possible solution is to have a short list of first names to choose from.

Yea.  It should be like in Origins, random name selector or you can choose your own.  I'm really not very creative when it comes to name selection especially in this type of era.  The names never seem to fit right.

Naming your character gives at best a false sense of control. You're not any more or less in control of who you are because your parents name you instead of you naming yourself.

The name you choose never even shows up during the game. Ever. Appearance customization is real control; you look at your character constantly. Race and gender selection are real. Ability selection is real. Otherwise, whatever real control you have over your character has to come from the actual choices you make and actions you take while you're playing the game. Choosing a name is completely meaningless.

In the meantime, having everybody, even family, even love interests, call you by surname or title, is painfully unnatural. Moreover, whatever name is chosen can never have any special significance: Carver was named after a Templar, but where did my name come from? All so that players can choose a name that never has even the slightest relevance to either the character or the game? That's a crappy, crappy tradeoff.

(Humorous aside. The first time I played Baldur's Gate II, my character was named Veldrin. Going to the Underdark was funny and awkward.)

And here's the reason why we should be able to keep the ability to make/pick the first name :)

Nah I love naming my characters even if the name only crops up here and there. It works for some games, and I'm sure Bioware could make an RPG where it still feels like your character despite the name, but I would rather I could still add that little but important dose of customisation.

Hawke never bothered me because it was no different to Tabris or Brosca.

I can't say "No" loudly enough.

Names are important. Three-fourths of the thought I put into a character goes into the name.

No. I'll wait for the AI to come that will recognize the name we choose. ;)
