Should Bioware do a default first name in the next Dragon Age?

Does anyone think that they should setup an ordinary name that can be spoken in the next DA, instead of giving you the choice to name them yourself?
This is only applicable if they don't continue with either Hawke or the Warden in the next game, but is there much point to naming your own character. The only use I see is being able to tell the difference between the saves.
I just refer to all my characters as Hawke, and have actually forgotten all the names I have given them. In game your only ever called Hawke, and the name you made is only on show above the experience bar ,on the 360 anyway. Being able to name your character works better if your character can't talk in my opinion.
not for me. because in DA we build our own main char, not like other RPGs game where the main char is already have default class or skill
if bioware can make DA to say the first name we customize, it'll be better

Last name is a bit different, I have no problem with that being set already. Works for different forms of address. Titltes are good for that, too. It would have been nice with other things than just "Hawke" from all the other characters, though. I mean. I can accept that some might go for the last name and use that instead ... but not everyone, when it seems to be the norm to use first name when speaking to someone. More nicknames from different characters would've been nice. Or if they had made a thing about how no one addresses Hawke with his/her first name.

Besides, I think using 'Hawke' and 'Shepard' works just fine, assuming a name needs to be used in conversations that directly involve them. Which it often doesn't. I rarely say "So what do you think about that, Bob?", I'll just say "What do you think about that?"

Forced last names are fine. Forced first names are a do not want.

I wouldn't really mind, seeing as I generally go for a good story over customisation. But its kind of unnecessary. "Hawke" worked really well for DA2, I thought.
I found it weird that you'd claim to be Hawke when your brother/sister was sitting right there, though. They're "Hawke" too. I wouldn't mind if they let you give your character a middle name or something along those lines, and everyone else either calls you by your last name and your familiars call you by your first name.
I'd like to see them have more people in the game with last names that get used, though.

That was odd, yes. I think it occurred only on one or two occasions, though? Mostly, others just sort of started calling you Hawke for whatever reason. But Hawke actually saying "I'm Hawke" felt strange.

If the siblings had registered names with the mercenaries or smugglers as well, and our character just got "Hawke" first, then that could have been interesting. Carver could have been Falcon, and Bethany could have been Sparrow (or Little Wing, giving a nod to Mass Effect, and just being adorable!). It only felt awkward when your character introduced yourself with family present. Otherwise it was no problem for me.

To the folk talking about it being weird because of your brother and sister: Some people get called by their second name as a nickname and some even prefer this to their given name. Perhaps this is how your Hawke feels. If other people have always referred to him/her as Hawke and your siblings by their first names then I'm pretty sure they'd be used to it by now.
I actually know a guy whose mother refers to him as his last name when she's talking to his friends. It's kind of hilarious.

No wonder Carver resents his elder sibling

What do we gain? A far more normal personal dynamic between the characters, and fewer "The Champion" situations. "You knew him better than anyone!" bellows Cassandra. Well apparently Varric knows everything about the Champion but his/her first name.
I get that you naysayers like to RP as your favorite most special character, and that you like to name your person, but there are some horrifically awkward workarounds sometimes. After you fight for Isabela's life, she would probably use your first name. Your siblings would definitely use your first name, and anyone who says otherwise is ridiculous or never had a sibling. Your mom doesn't even use your name.
Sure, some of you fine folks may know somebody somewhere whose mother calls her child by his/her first name, but obviously you find that noteworthy as it is certainly not the norm. I know many people everywhere who prefer that their friends use their first names. As it stands in DA2, we see a lot of weird, unnatural workarounds to using a first name that just is not there.

I can't say "No" loudly enough.
Names are important. Three-fourths of the thought I put into a character goes into the name.
This.
People don't even realize that names give everything a personal meaning; throughout the ages, people with certain names have always done things a certain way, people with another name another way, and people with certain names happen to always be the nicest or the worst in society.

As much as I like customizing my character, having a first name chosen for me wouldn't bother me in the slightest, really. We don't choose our names in real life, and we have complete control over how our own "character" develops, our actions, etc. The name is a label, something to identify you as you...and all things considered I like having the option to choose my character's name in tabletop RPG's and whatnot, but in a voiced medium like video games? I would much rather my companions and friends refer to me by my first name, as I do with them, than for them to use a nickname, title or last name.
Everyone can choose their name as they age.

So long as BioWare uses human voice actors for all speech within their games, no, you will never be referred to via the spoken first name of your choice, unless that choice is made from a very short list.
Once a technology is developed/adopted that allows for the seamless natural synthesis of the spoken (first) name of your choice, matching any of the myriad voices used by actors within the relevant game, then the obvious and brisk next step is doing away with (human) voice actors period, and not just for computer games, but for animation, movie trailer voice-overs, foreign movie dubbing, and so forth.
Therefore, by taking a stand to preserve name choice in future Dragon Age games, you are taking a stand against the (human) voice acting community.
Do you want this?
Absolutely.

There is a drawback of course, but I think it's being a bit misrepresented. As far as the savegames go, they could just let you choose some middle name or nickname to differentiate the different save files. So that's really a non-issue. But there is an element of personalization that's a bit hard to describe about saying, "This is Bob. This is Oolong. This is Norville."
I don't see much value in it compared to more naturally flowing dialog.

I approve of using a given first name so that people aren't always calling my character "The Champion/Hawke/Brother/etc." Would be much more natural, in a fully voiced game.
