I haven't played DA2 in a bit due to school & life & etc. But:
In DAO I never enjoyed walking back from long corridors that I decided to walk down into to find loot, so I would put 'Hold Position' and then continue down the long corridor. If I walked into a dragon's nest alone, well **** I'm screwed, but that's one of the experiences of a game. Trial & Error is important to me, and it's always funny to say how I got pwned so easily. And if I didn't walk into a dragon's lair? Well I unlock a chest and then warp back to my party by selecting Zev or something and deactivate 'Hold Position'.
Why oh why does this not work in DA2? I will click "Hold Position", and I will start walking by Hawke self, then I see my party members start moving from my minimap, towards me. This invoked anger .__. Don't know why I waited so long to say so when it happened on day 1. Hold Position DOES work occasionally, but it should work absolutely.

I agree that the hold position is not working. The party starts walking as soon you get farther away. Iam used to use hold to lure enemies so my range members can shoot them from distance.

I have found that "hold position" coupled with the "move to point" directing them their designated spots does work. I use in just that order: "hold" then "move". Sadly it took me to near the end of the game ... and one of the toughest fights to suss this out after a number of reloads.

But yes using just the "hold position" command by itself only holds them a little further back rather than exactly where you want them to stay. I liken it to my 7yr old - tell him to wait, and he will wait until your just out of eyesight ... then he's compelled to come looking for you.

I have also found that my "hold position" does not work properly. At times it does, like I used it in the fade on the barrel puzzle and everyone stood in position away from me. At other times, like during random battles, I noticed that my companions were not holding and were all over the screen fighting whomever they wanted.

Recently completed the Forbidden Knowledge quest which culminated in a surprisingly difficult fight made more so because Anders and Varic decided it would be a really good idea to ignore my "move to..." and "hold position" commands and instead wanted to stand in the middle of the room where all the enemies spawned at as opposed to behind my Tank-Hawke.

So I would definitely put my vote behind the "hold position" command being only somewhat obeyed by your "teammates."

My "hold position" and "move" commands also don't work. The companions almost always revert to whatever their behavior preset is. Particularly noticeable with my healer. Move him where i want him, 1 min later he's standing next to me taking hits. It's hard to play tactically when the control system does not respond correctly.
