5/10 to me is average... when did 4/10 become scathing?
I am sorry but there is plenty of crap on the market that deserved much lower than the critics gave it.
When complete crap is receiving 5s, average games are receiving 7s and above average games are receiving 8s and 9s the scale has been shot to hell.
As I said.. I don't think DA2 deserved a 2.5 but it does balance out the rest of the industry reviews, many of which are artifically inflated.
Does depend on the outlet's criteria, of course.
One of the mags I've reviewed for clearly states, and I quote, "5 is a decidedly average game - the ultimate in mediocrity. Below this you'll start to find the games our reviewers suffered an aneurysm getting through." That's pretty scathing, but it's just one example, and designed to be humorous.
That's very general, and reviewers very often clarify how they scored more explicitly, but scores have to be taken in the context of criteria and, surely, with a bit of a laugh rather than genuine "I can't believe they gave this a 10" or whatever. Scores are a complex beast, which I'm sure most reviewers take very seriously, presumably even 2.5 guy thought it through carefully.
As to why most games score above 5? I don't really know, but I'd guess that outlets, in general, genuinely like games and gaming. I mean, gaming is supposed to be fun. Reviewers do the job because they are passionate about gaming and enjoy games. Better games are more likely to get time/attention/a page in a magazine? I dunno.

I love how the OP puts "Gamecritics: 2.5..." in the very beginning of the title of this thread and later goes 5 pages explaining how, you see, the score isn't important. It's as if he created a thread called "Brad Somebody from Gamecritics proves that Obama is Stalin reborn!" and later rants how we didn't read the article, which was actually about demotivational posters with Putin.
Excuse me, but can you please quote where I go "on and on" for 5 pages about the score not being important? I never said that.
I think the score is important. I agree with it.

That title catches attention, and look at the results. Can't really blame him..

To give this game a 2.5 screams "I'm pissed that I'm not playing as the warden",

This game deserves atleast a 4 or a 5 out of 10. That's what I gave it.

Many are praising Brad's honesty and integrity. I agree with them.
Discuss.
EDIT: READ THE WHOLE REVIEW before posting. Don't just look at the score and fanboy flame it.

I don't trust IGN because they hand out good scorse to just about everything. And I don't trust Gamespot because if an advertiser wants they can buy a reveiw(or get the reveiw fired).
the critic that did this review was down right zelot and on top of that he was baseing his review of gameplay on xbox for pc and PS3 my verric new moonwalked my mobs never spawned form thin air they ran in if you wanted to do review he should have played on all platforms if any thing PC is smooth and i never hade any of the bugs this review is pissin and maoning about that is all i am saying
I'm playing on the PC and ran into all sorta of bugs, and if you haver had mobs pop out of nowhere then you are not playing this game.
i am so playing this game and i have never hade this issue maby its you PC and you got ruber band lag issue i am runing a quad core and i have GTX 460 super clocked and about 8 gigs of ram like i said my game is smooth and i have never hade mobs come form thin air or any of these ground brakeing bugs you all claim to have

Either way, you've said that most of the people there agree on that score, but most of the people here don't. Most of the people who post on <insert random non-game related forum> don't give a damn. So, yeah, I don't know what sort of point were you trying to make with this "disapproval by democracy", but it certainly isn't valid anymore...

I'm going to assume english isn't your first language.
Ask anyone if mobs pop out of nowere, it's not a bug it's part of the damn game, thats why you have wave after wave of mercs trying to kill you all the time(and what the hell is up with Bioware and merc recently).
The Isabella/Sebetian friendship bugs are also ones that happen to everyone(or at least people who use them alot).
The Mareil plot glitch, The rescue quest glitch, all of these are happening to a large amount of the player base.
Also let me say this one more time THE MOBS POP OUT OF THE MOTHER F***ING AIR(sorry but that is my biggest gripe with this game, well that and them only making 1 of every location).

From what I gather, most game reviewers have a different gaming experience than I do. I can't afford to try out every game that comes out for my Xbox, so I tend to stick to what I know and creators I trust. I can enjoy a game on it's own merits without a limited attention span because I can't pick up and play the other two dozen new releases at a moment's notice. I don't have access to developers' betas to butter me up, nor do I have the ability to try out most games until they hit the bargain rack. I usually love Bioware games, so DA2 was a rare early purchase for me. I enjoyed it, but I probably would have been just as happy with it if it was a surprise I bought at the bargain special edition bin with all the DLCs included on the disc.
Most people I know (and their opinions are the only ones who influence mine) agree with me that the game is enjoyable and had some improvements over DA:O, particularly the conversation wheel, characters, and player combat controls. But it severely disappointed in areas that didn't need fixing, like map design. The sad part is that map design and random combat generation in the first game was very good and much better than DA2. The city of Kirkwall and nearby caves looked pretty for the moment, but the multitude of "blocked" cave entrances and cemented-over doorways screamed lazy Neverwinter Nights player-made module.

The reviewer's expectation of Bioware is so high that in his review he only sees all the flaws and disregard the smallest of improvement made in DA2 - too emotional a review thus far from a creditable one.
For many who feel that Origins was one of the greatest if not the greatest western RPG and wanted more of Origins, they will slam DA2 emotionally. For those who are not that impressed by Origins - not so much.

Your blindness knows no bounds obviously. Many people in this thread are supporting and agreeing with that review. They have all purchased the game.
Many people on the review site, in the comments, agree with the review.

It's largely the obnoxious and ass-like tone, not that you're complaining about the game...
