Anyway, quite bored of the whole "robe is a dress" thing. They aren't the same. Not to mention there are many cultures where the men traditionally wore some kind of wrap around skirt type attire and they'd be perfectly happy to demonstrate their knives are not ornamental if you decided they were unmanly because of it.

Mind you... nothing against Linen Skirtwraps and such. But they are a lot more pleasing to the eye than a robe. I am so sick and tired of robes. Mages always seem to have to wear robes. Always. Its some kind of unwritten Fantasy Law i guess... a Mage has to wear a robe and preferably hate metal. He can't even wear a leather outfit, because it would hamper his spellcasting ability. Or some other stupid explaining why a Mage has to wear a robe.

And because i am this fed up with mages being restricted to robes.. i will keep calling it a dress. Because they couldn't be more heineous if they would be pink with white flowers on it.

I have enough of ugly Robes for Mages. Give me pants and a shirt. For all i care some egyptian leinen wrap... or a toga... or whatever... but no more robes. I can't stand those things anymore. Heck i even would do with a full pelt outfit. Or dress like a silly pirate and going arrrr arrrrr all day.

I am a fashion victim, i want my character look cool. No robe ever made a character look cool.

Robes are absent from modern fashion for a reason. Noone wants to wear a robe. A bathrobe maybe, but who of you guys would seriously want to go out to town in a robe? Anyone? A skirt, sure why not, during summer i can be quite nice. But a robe?

I wouldn't compare robes to dresses myself, most robes aren't particularly fashionable.

I was SO bummed there weren't more cool-looking mage clothes. Luckily I think the Notorious Pirate getup looks awesome, so I just edited its level up when it became clear I needed better armor.

And there's also that suit of armor you can get, Battlemage's something-or-other. But the pirate robes are still the best.

Mage robes are a staple fantasy and RPG trope. Honestly with how much the cRPG crowd is raging over DA2 I'm amazed no one has posted a thread complaining that the Champion's Armor is not something a mage should be wearing.

That aside, it doesn't help that in this game we get to see mages not wearing the standard tired old robes, Bethany and Merril both get freaking chainmail tunics and they look awesome for it, and then theres the Champion's Armor which is about as far from the traditional mage look as you can get. Which just ends up high lighting how old and tired the robe idea is as well as how nonsensical it is. Sure the typical mage scholar spending their life in the Circle tower wearing robes totally makes sense, but for an adventurer mage who is actually out in the world facing dangers on a daily basis, wearing robes that appear to offer zero combat functionality is more than a little silly.

You don't have to. There are a number of non-robe outfits, including the champion's outfit and some kind of pirate thing.

Far too few; & I really dislike the robes for mages used in games like BG and DA.

when I play through as a mage hawke i'm probably going to put points into other stats just so I can wear some plate armour and not a robe. at least until I get the champion stuff

Pirate robes. Act II, Wounded Coast. Quest you stumble across where guards are pinned down by pirates. Actually a rogue style, and Rogues get multiple versions of the look.

I think I found one or two pieces of good looking mage gear in the entire game, so I ended up wearing them throughout. Even though at the closing of the game they completely sucked stat wise I could not bear to run around in the atrocious dresses I kept finding.

The Smuggler's Strappings, the one you get at the start of the game from Athenril was the first.

The Robe of the Notorius Pirate was the other as mentioned several times by others here, it's what I finished the game wearing and wore in combat for probably 40-70% of the entire game.

I went with an aquamarine ballgown it set off the colours in my beard gloriously.

Oh and Greaves of the fallen, followed by stonehammer boots with the blood dragon helm and even though I do say so myself I looked bloody tasty.

The main reason that you don't see mages in armor is balance. But in this game for most of the game my mages robes had better armor stats than my warriors armor.

Best way to explain it is that metal interferes with casting or something. But instead of forcing robes why not just regular clothes?

The Scottish used to wear their kilts into battle.

They were called "The Ladies From Hell".

MageHawke is Scottish. He is a Lady from Hell.

I know at least one of the Bioware reps on these forum has addresed this but a mage robe needs a cape (see: avatar), otherwise they all look like bath robes.

Credit for the Cranius reference, by the way.

Robes mean you don't have to wear anything underneath it. It's warmer in the Free Marches, so Hawke is just taking that opportunity to be a little more "free," also.

I was pretty pissed that there were like only 3 mage armors you get in the game that looked good, and one of them [champion] was an endgame set.

Think i'll go warrior or rogue from here on out.

I thought the mage gear was pretty disappointed. I thought there would be more sets like the Champion set. I tried on every piece of mage gear I could loot/buy, and all of it was similar looking robes, save for like two of those starter vests. They could have at least kept those "Tevinter" style robes with the fur shoulders from DAO.

This is exactly why I downloaded the low level champion armor mod. Most/all the robes are butt ugly.

I mean c'mon Bioware, you made metal armor all spiky for some reason, why can't mage robes be... less lame?

Hawke wears a dress because he is secure in his almighty right to kick ass and to freak out his opponents.

"Dude! I got my ass kicked by a dude in a dress! That's so gay! I hate you BW for making me gay!"

Or, maybe he does it to look less threatening to the templars. Who knows? Ask Varric. He followed the guy around for ten years and wrote the book on him.

Or, maybe Hawke is a girl.

Robes can be cool.

Its really more have to do with Biowares god awful robe design.

If they made bad asser robes, than no problem.
