So I finally finished my first playthrough and I decided my next playthrough is going to be a dual rogue on HARD DIFFICULTY... Anyway I really need advice here because my first real boss fight against the troll at the beginning ended in my dying 4 times until I changed the difficulty back to normal :pinched:

My planned party is going to be:

Hawke- Dual Wield Rogue
Fenris- Two Handed Tank
Varric- Archer Rogue
Merril- Healer/ Nuke (I'd use Anders but after my first playthrough I don't like him very much, lol.)

Anyway, not sure if this is the best and advice is appreciated. I also don't know exactly whats best for a dual Hawke rogue pure damage dealing or a Two Handed tank.

I found Anders to be essential on Nightmare because he can revive even across very long distances.

Merril has no healing spells btw, but kicking out Varric and keeping Merril and Anders will give you lots more opportunities to perform Assassinate on BRITTLE bosses.

(give both Merril and Anders upgraded Petrify and upgraded Brittle)

If you are playing Casual or Normal, then the party composition doesn't matter as much.

I despise reusing characters unless I absolutely have too. I used both Merril and Anders on my last playthrough.

Sorry, I thought I mentioned I was on a hard playthrough. I had intended to mention that..

Bethany is the only other NPC healer, and she has winter's grasp (unfortunately no access to the Primal school CCC spells), you may want to try Fenris, Merril and Bethany instead of Anders.

How do I get to keep her through the entire game, though?

And merrils blood magic is so much dang fun I think I'll keep her, lol.

Haha you should reroll mage so.
On a more serious note. there are tons of ppl who are playing the game in nightmare difficulty in solo or witouth any healer. You can find their blog in this forum.
I am not saying playing witouth a healer is impossible. It will be harder but still doable as long as you can micro manage your team and as long as you can supply them with pots/poison

Those people are crazy... I'd rather play with a healer.

A lesson I wish had been learned from DA:O/DA:A.  Some players would like more healer choices beyond "the single NPC healer" and playing a mage protagonist with healing capability.  Warrior and rogue Hawkes get teased with Bethany until they finish the Deep Roads and one way or another find her no longer available.

The game is of course probably doable without a dedicated healer on Normal, but I suspect on Hard and especially Nightmare a lot of potion abuse and injury kit consumption and use of the Power Word: Reload spell will ensue if one tries to avoid being a healing mage Hawke or dragging out the Anders.

At least in DA:O you could make Morri a healer...  DA2 it's either Anders or Hawke...  or lots of alchemy
