DA2 elves are made to resemble the Na'Vi 'cause the kids like the Avatar movie

(imagine reading that in Harry Plinkett's voice to get the full effect)

Others, the crowd who grew up suckling anime and Chinese movies, prefer anime-ish combat and anime-ish elves. Also, they prefer everything weird and abnormal, and fast. They like the new combat, because it isn't in any way normal. It is totally fantastic, and fast. They prefer the new elves, precisely because they look alien and nonhuman.

Well sir, you are wrong. I love anime and I adore anime elves, but I hate BioWare's aliens. With your statement it would seem that we like everything that is nonhuman.  Besides, if 2d anime would be turned into 3d, it would still look hotter and better then elves from DA2.

People saying "elves should look like humans with pointy ears" should do some research on mythology. Before LOTR and D&D, elves were extremely varied depending on what part of the world the lore came from.

For example, in norse mythology elves were tall and slender with bronze skin, silver/white hair, very majestic and celestial/angelic creatures. Whereas in German mythology the elves were more of a impish/devilish creature, not unlike that thing in Harry Potter. They were known for playing pranks.  In some lore, elves were spirits that haunted forests. lol

It wasn't until LOTR and D&D that elves were seen more as "short humans with pointy ears who live a long time." In a way, they took all that elf lore and kinda "streamlined" it. lol   Dragon Age's elves can look however they want them, and i love the new more unique look. I support the new elf look 100% =)

the DA2 ones are much better, they're actually a different species. they're much more slim, bare feet, large eyes and pupils, and if you notice the bridge of their nose is a continuous line (no dent) from forehead to the tip of their nose

..... I prefer the BG2 Jaheira. In most novels I read the authors describe their elves as having large slanted "almond shaped" eyes, high cheek bones, and slender builds, and the elders looking like wisened children and what-not. I like the more exotic look for the elves. Call it what you want -- more feral, more alien... at least it's not pointy eared humans... or as one poster mentioned.. Vulcans... God no... this ain't star trek. lol

They are also all Welsh. They abducted Welsh people, zapped them with a Dragon Ageification ray, and imported them into the game world. And then performed horrible things to change their physical appearance (think a clockwork orange for the eyes...) and forced them to go around barefoot everywhere. Because they're Welsh, and they don't deserve shoes.

Except the ones that are Scottish or Irish.. I certainly remember someone with a really string Irish accent saying "Watch your step, shem." Can't remember who, but I guess they ran out of Welsh people?

And people calling Tolkien's elves classic and saying he invented elves are incorrect. Elves existed in folklore hundreds of years before LOTR. His "streamlined" version is actually quite modern.

The DA2 elves look more distinct but also, more strange. I prefer the DA:O elves.

Not really. His version is mostly like the folklore — and yes, they are fairies.

It's misunderstanding of Tolkien by contemporary readers that creates the "streamlined" version we have these days.

Also, when people say that Tolkien's elves look like humans, they really just mean that Peter Jackson's elves look like humans.

Did anyone mention the goat ears they all have in DA2?

Seriously - those bald elves are basically skinny goblins.

At least their ears aren't glued to the side of their heads. One thing that really annoyed me with DA:O was when I created my elf warden (see, i'm a huge elf fan), that my ears were hardly even noticeable.... and with the longer hairstyles, they were completely covered up!

The reason for that is pretty much the same reason Sten didn't have horns: Helmets and nonstandard facial features don't mix.

Fortunately, there's mods for that! There's the mod that can permanently hide your helmet, and thanks to somebody making a decent preset for elven girls my Minerva got to have her cute pointy ears that stick right through her hair.

i think comparing just the elves is being a bit blind about the subject.

put 2 humans or dwarves next to each other, the difference is just as dramatic.

my human warden looked somewhat realistic, like they were going for the realism graphics style.
my DA2 hawke looks more super-human than the commander in ME2.

lol.
