I like what they tried to do with the elves in DA2, but I don't like the actual end product. I don't mind trying to make them a bit more different and therefore make them a bit more special, but they did end up looking quite freaky. Especially those big fishy eyes.

Honestly i prefer the DA2 version, elves aren't real and as such i like them to look more distinguished than humans.

Not to say they are perfect, but they should be slimmer at least.

I wouldn't say sheep.  She's as stubborn as a ram though. :P

If you had said 'flesh coloured Ruto from Legend of Zelda' then you'd have me there.

More like a fish to me, but the sheep comparison has merit. Especially for her dumb personality.

WOW!!! Now that you put them side by side I would have to agree. DAO versions look much more realistic where as the DA2 looks very cartoony.

. . . realistic? Can you show me what real elves look like?

The DA:O elves looked like humans. Boring. This isn't Star Trek. The DA2 elves, while I find their brontosaurus necks to be frightening, look inhuman. They look alien and otherwordly. They take you aback.

That is a good thing.

By realistic I meant lifelike and not cartoons.

You aren't giving human appearance variation enough credit.

What's inhuman about DA2 elves again? Oh right, nose bridge and floppy ears. That's still Star Trek level of alien, really.

That's how i kinda feel about the new elves, too. I don't actually mind the faces, but the bodies are.. well.

(and that reaction isn't because they look "inhuman' but because they look spot on like malnourished humans)

No, man, you are very wrong. Merrill looks like the woman I have always dreamt of (well figuratively speaking at least, in fact she looks better:wub:)

People saying "elves should look like humans with pointy ears" should do some research on mythology. Before LOTR and D&D, elves were extremely varied depending on what part of the world the lore came from.

For example, in norse mythology elves were tall and slender with bronze skin, silver/white hair, very majestic and celestial/angelic creatures. Whereas in German mythology the elves were more of a impish/devilish creature, not unlike that thing in Harry Potter. They were known for playing pranks.  In some lore, elves were spirits that haunted forests. lol

It wasn't until LOTR and D&D that elves were seen more as "short humans with pointy ears who live a long time." In a way, they took all that elf lore and kinda "streamlined" it. lol   Dragon Age's elves can look however they want them, and i love the new more unique look. I support the new elf look 100% =)

As do I. This appears to be the way that all elves will look like from now on. So people minus well get used to it. BTW> the elves in DA 2 are not ugly! Hell they dont even look alian too me. I think all you haters are just reading too much into it as well as not gving Bioware any credit for creativity. DRAGON AGE IS NOT LOTRS!  As such the elves are allowed to look any way the dev team wants them to look.

One thing I did prefer in DA2 was the elves, they were more distinct and felt like a different species unlike the DA:O elves.

This particular picture yes, i think so. Frighteningly enough though, it's not that different from actual pictures of the same person taken at that time. Or other people for this matter.

Elves were believable in DAO. In DA2 they look like hastily made WoW characters.

Have you seen what they have done to poor Zevran?  Unforgivable.

Sorry I had to point that out before I moved on, you'll thank me later.

That out of the way.

I like the new elf look but I agree, Zaveran lost something in the exchange.

I can blame most of it on ear position though.

Well the others look ugly too, but at least in a human way and not in an alien monster way like the one you posted first....

Not happy with the angle of the ears on the new elves in DA2 they should a little more up-swept and slightly smaller to stop them looking like Yoda clones. Also whats with them all being barefoot, Fenris, Merril that elf maid you get as a servent in your house...all barefoot !!! I can understand some being barefoot like a keeper etc...to be closer to the earth but a strapping two handed sword wielding killer called Fenris being barefoot just looks weird and wimpy and he also needed more spikes on his armor according to Isabella's comments in game chatter....juts my 2 cents worth...peace all. :)

Eh, D&D's elves have been going this way since even 1e's monster manual. They definitely looked similar to DA2's depiction in the 3e images. It'd only be jarring to someone who's idea of elves come only from the LotR movies.

Ugh, anyone remember the elf paper dolls in BG2? Ew.

Yep, see my ears? I like them, please don't mess with them. The elf redesign was a bit over the top for me, among others. I'm more amazed that with the short time they had to make DA2 that they even took the time to make new models for the Elves, Hurlocks, etc. Makes more sense to reuse the models already done for Origins. Oh well....

Don't get started on the clown redesign for the darkspawn. Just horrid.

I dislike the elf redesign, its like they rammed in some Navi from avatar, put it on a rack and comically stretch it. C'mon, the bobble head necks? Horrible.

<- my avatar. That is an elf.

I can understand that Bioware wanted to redesign the elves a bit in DA2 to make them look more unique, or at least so there was more than just the ears to distinguish them from humans.

But I think they went a little too far with the redesign, to the point that the elves are now completely unattractive. That would be fine if it was in keeping with the lore, but it was already established in DA:O that elves, even if reviled, are generally considered physically attractive by human standards. As such they shouldn't look as thin & frail as they do in DA2. In DA3 Bioware should redesign them again and try to find a middle ground between their portrayals in DA:O and DA2. They should be thinner and shorter than humans but not to the point that they look like Santa's little helpers.
