It appears that some talents only work in conjunction with a set weapon configuration. For example, backstab, back-to-back, and vendetta do not function correctly when using a main hand + shield weapon configuration. When you activate these abilities while using sword and board, your character will disappear appropriately, but you simply re-appear in the same spot, rather than near the target.
I haven't tested all talent and weapon configurations, there may be other limitations as well. I've been tinkering with GDAs to no avail. I figured someone with a bit more expertise might have some ideas.
I might update this post with a table that details what does and does not work in the future.
