I'll be sure to let authors around the world know that. Hopefully we can get it removed from literature.

PS That was sarcasm.

Lol, I said it wasn't easily embodied, not that it's impossible to notice xP

Then man up.
Blothulfur was being subtle and clever -- you missed it.
Don't blame poor text. (Text is getting enough abuse heaped on it with twitter and messaging -- it doesn't need you pointing fingers at it because you were too quick with a reply button.)

And I'm just pointing out that, on the whole, more often than not text doesn't show the subtle sarcasm as well as vocal perception would

If you've overlooked the exploding bodies, buckets of blood, sex, slavery, and genocide to complain about cursing in a game rated M... You may have a tough time making your point. The only people who are offended by 'bad words' are people too childish to properly address them for what they are; words.

Sorry for coming off harsh, censorship is a very damaging element to a society and culture and propagates naivety and misunderstanding. But that's a topic for another forum...

It's varric's story. Thus, he pictures every woman with huge boobs.

As for profanity. It's an M rated game. If you want to share games with kids, that's what E is for.

/thread.

First, let me take a moment to address a few issues since it seems either a lot of you are misunderstanding or cannot read. I do not personally have kids, nor am I offended in any way with the use of profane writing. I'm also not on any ''high horse.'' I am 24 years old, and played Counterstrike professionally as Cal-P - and I currently play Starcraft 2 in masters (so I can guarentee you I hear cursing on a daily basis), but not as serious about it do to university study. So, I'm not some 75 year old outragously offended because someone said ''****.'' I've also been computer gaming since the days of Commander Keen and Biomenace. My first true rpgs were just muds with text-only navigation.

That said, the profanity in this game is not necessary; It shows a lack of maturity and depth. If this were a fantasy novel that we were talking about, the amount of profanity here would sink the book. Now if this were a game such as Grand Theft Auto, a game I play and liked; I certainly expect the profanity and violence. But you see, that's my point; is bioware so intent on establishing the mass audience that the level of writing has to match modern day street talk?

Maybe responding here will do nothing, as it seems a majority of you are missing my point.

No offence intended, but I believe you are also missing ours. Weather it is NECESSARY or not isn't the issue, it's the character design. Isibela is a pirate,a raider, and more often than not probably the only woman on a crew when it goes out. She's used to the vulgarity, and due to it, has become quite vulgar herself.
Varric is a professional liar. Lies sound more realistic when you tell them as a story, complete with cursing and yet even MORE vulgarity.

The point we're trying to run across isn't that this stuff is necessary, but rather, it's EXPECTED form the way the characters are designed. Pirates are vulgar, or worse, so you have Isabela, and I can tell you from experience that 90% of lies are more realistic when you throw srearing and cursing in casually.

I kind of agree with the message, but not the "OH WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN" argument. It is kind of immersion breaking when a guy talks about eating someone and ****ing them out into a lake. Dragon Age: Origins had curses (I believe) but they were so well integrated that they didn't feel out of place. Some places it is good, but profanity for profanity's sake is never good.

Try The Witcher. Books preferably, or the game in Enhanced Edition. I couldn't imagine it without swearing & "profanity". It fits the character very well, it actually adds depth, realism and helps immersion in my opinion.
For the game characters all the dialogues and situations are "real" - and they express their feelings by swearing. This of course works, if they are written properly (so, are you saying that dialogues & character are badly written in DA:2, Any0day?)

That said, I haven't finished the game yet. I haven't even noticed that much foul  language so far, except for the moment i've enjoyed Aveline calling Isabella "a who-... hohohoho :) ". Precise.

Perhaps; maybe it just seems forced and out of character.

Cursing isn't modern. People have been cursing for millenia.

I suppose I should have stated more accurately that the amount of open and widely used cursing that's done these days is very modernized.

The romans cursed quit offen. I wasen't considered "tabo" until christianity rose to the forefront of western culture.

"Moderen cursing" as you put it is actually very true to how ancient romans spoke in every day life.

Seriuosly this games language isn't bad at all, I'd encourage more cursing when appropriate as it can make some aspects more believable.

For instance a carta thug isn't gonna speak all roses and daisies he's gonna be dropping F- bombs left, right and centre so in some cases the more bad language the better.

You see, the problem with this type of thinking is it does not match well with a fantasy setting. So, just a question - if you walked into a tavern in a an rpg and this is what you heard:

NPC1 All we've ever been is ****es. Working for *******, working for
******, any **** with a buck. The whole lot spent in the proper
manner, oh yeah, wine and women, as quick as possible, and remain a
slave forever.
NPC2 Very poetical.

That would be fine for you?

By the way, that's a quote out of GTA4

No it wouldn't work in that sense, but nether is it overboard in how it's done in DA2.

It didn't feel unnecessary in my opinion. Seemed like a believable amount of profanity to me. And for those who say "it's rated M or 18+", this doesn't always apply. For example I began playing M games at 12 years old, and 5 years later here I am as a decent human-being.

Point is, profanity isn't as bad as the blood, sex, and slavery in the game.

Unnecessary? No. It's rated 18+.

And it's realistic. I've got friends who could almost equal Isabela in terms of referring to sex all of the time.

And it seems it's mostly Isabela doing the profane talking. Isabela and ... whomever Isabela is talking to. Don't bring her along, and you'll get a whole lot less profanity.

The game is 18+.

Don't pull the children card, if one were a parent playing DA2 in front of their kid and they heard whatever you don't want them to, blame yourself!

Grow up. Words are words. A penis is just an organ, just like a vagina. The sanctimonious stance helps no one, caveman.

Yes.

honestly, i would be surprised that people would not swear in certain situations.

Darkspawn chasing you = worth 2 swears
You wake up to see your son/daughter become an abomination = 5 swears.

+points for including the words andraste and nickers.

Idk .. pg-13, swearing and semi-clothed sex scenes go hand in hand. The recent addition of profanity to Bw's video games feel a little . . awkward?

Do you know why? Because you are complaining about the profanity... When you SHOULD have entitled the thread: "Did Bioware forget how to write?!" -.- Because through 7 pages of thread you are not complaining about the swearing persay (or so you continuesly say after page 1) but of how the writing is childish and maladroit . . .

Which I completely agree with. I also think the swearing is absolutly necessary, just done porely and in bad taste. Though I didn't knotice it at all, coming from a family that swears at the dinner table. It made me giggle like a school child. I had problems with the REST of the game.

Ah those words aren't bad, the F-word gets a bit hard on the ears (which is why I mentioned Jack lol).
And the British don't like the C-word (c-u-n---).

If it had those words there might be a problem lol.
