What difficulty is that on ?
I've usually ended up with 50g from act 1 and playing on NM you need the pots ;(.
Sorry for not being clear, it was on NM. A Vanguard Warrior with the Blood Dragon Armor and Hayder's Razor really makes the first act Easy Mode. If you need the health pots, then you can keep those and stash everything else - they are the least profitable pots anyway.

There's an idea- if you really wanted to go min/max crazy, you could keep the less profitable potions "on hand" for the places you have easy access to merchants, thereby incresing the droprate of the more profitable potions. Of course, the fact that would probably only yield 1 or 2g in Act 1 makes it silly to actually do...

I thought I was doing a lot better this time around after developing better strategies, but I still got my ass handed to me in a couple of tough early Act 2 battles.
I thought I could handle these without bringing any healing potions, but I was wrong.
I died numerous times during the final battles in Sheparding Wolves and Blackpowder promise. In the Blackpowder promise battle, I retreated back to the cave entrance and used Gravitic Ring to block the chokepoint. Just when the tide was finally turning, a new Assassin and more dwarves suddenly appeared immediately behind me.

I have a RoF in Varrics armor, 1 in the Emp Shield and that it's other wise as a rogue you die elemental attacks heh.
Maybe next playthrough but is it really possible on NM to end act 1 with decent money ?

I have found a huge difference the second time around by selling off all potions.
Also I'm not wasting any gold on superfluous weapons, elfroot potions, injury kits, Tar bombs, Combustion Grenades, deathroot toxin or debilitating poison, which made me broke the first time around.
Before entering the Deep Roads I was able to buy the following items and I had around 50-60 gold left IIRC (took loan from Dougal)
- 5 fire warding runes
- 2 or 3 blood mage items from the trinkets woman
- 4 Maker's Sigh potions
- 3 or 4 electricity warding runes
- Tome of Technique
- Varric's armor upgrade
- one cold staff
- a couple mage armor items with rune slots.

It's probably easier a Mage with pots but as melee assassin they are needed as you die on harder bosses and regroup has a long timer.
I usually buy warding runes, makers sighs and the 3 slot for Ave as I can put 1 fire rune with a electricty ward and a ROF.
I ended with around 50g from Act as the ARW chests all have 4 or 5 sovs in and I equipped items that had ROFs slotted. Don't know if it made a difference

One thing I noticed while fishing for some superior gear on casual, is that ARW will sometimes drop 6-7g ish. Other times it's 40 silver or something =/ If you really wanna get the most out of act 1 and aren't averse to loot fishing, might be worth doing ARW a few times until you get the 7g drop.
Did you notice if the 6g drops were occurring only on your fastest kills? I was testing something else and thought I noticed a pattern where a boss would drop an extra amount of gold if killed under a certain time limit.

Right, I noticed. It's just not explicit about the step you need to take before the game even starts to get there. The OP lists steps in order, so perhaps it would be worth sticking a line at the top that mentions choosing the particular Awakenings save or one of those 2 pre-built backgrounds. That's all.
I know I got burned when I got to Act 3 and realized I couldn't get Varric's Armor slot for a decision I made before the game even started.

If you accept to be funded, you do not get the 50 gold once you return.
So either way, you have the same amount of gold to spend. The 'friends in low places' quest is there to progress the game if the player is careless with their money.

This doesn't work for me. If I get the bribe, Friedrich dissapears.SuicidialBaby wrote...
Take the Merchant's bribe during Athenril's quest - 2g
Complete Meeran's quest by killing Friedrich. - 5g
Wait. So you talked to Athenril first - accepted it. Then accepted the bribe from the merchant. Went back to Athenril to laugh at her getting kicked out of the gallows. Then talked to Meeran and accepted his job - and friedrich wasn't there? How did you get out of the gallows then?
How odd

Edit: They disappear when I get the merchant's key, even before getting the money itself.
