Well acquainted with it. Still believe the items are worth a side mention for loading up after Companions have been loaded up.

The main use is the chestpieces with two slots. You can loadup on runes fairly early in Act I, with a +10% to money drops. Later on, I usually use armor runes in the higher level suits, but you can still keep the lower level one and wear it for big drops.

The gloves, boots and helmets can also take runes, but the effect is less pronounced. You can even put two runes in the Apostate's facemask if you want.

Do you guys bother with pick-axes quest from the miners? You're essentially buying 1000xp for 15gold. Seems like a lousy return to me.

Anyone able to clarify on the second Lyrium where it states "downstairs from officer's room...leave".

This is pretty vague, assuming that, since you didn't state a specific place, that it's supposed to be in the Qunari cave, but yet, I have been searching for 20 mins where I killed the officer and have come up with nothing.

Edit* NVM, I had picked it up and didn't realize it.

Its better than the return you would get if you choose to get paid for the Qunari Swords.

Also considering that once you get into Act 2, you should be rolling in Gold and never dropping under 50 unless you make a uber purchase.

Strange comparison to make.  There is no incentive to choose to get paid, since the reward is so much worse - 100xp and 30s versus 1200xp per sword. There are 3 qunari swords that are bought, which cost a combined 10.5g, grant you 1200xp each and upon handing all 10 swords in you get an extra 1500xp.

Pickup pickaxes: 1000xp for 15g
Qunari swords: 5100xp for 10.5g

However, even if you DO choose to get paid, Pickup pickaxes is STILL worse since you get 1800xp for 7.5g

Pickup pickaxes is not worth it for me.

I chose to mention getting paid for Qunari Swords because that is the only worse EXP/Gold ratio in the game I could think of to compare Pick Up Pickaxes too.

Suicidal Baby: another helpful thread as usual.

Question: forgive me for not having read the entire thread to see if this has already been answered or not, but since alll the companion armor upgrades that add runeslots to the chest armor dont come online until act 2, it looks like the ROF tactic is seriously gimped for Act 1 deeproads ... unless you mount them all on hawke's hands, feet and gloves.  Is that about right ?

Based on anecdotal evidence, the difference between following these steps and not in Act 1 is worth around 30-40g. It's true that the impact is greater in Acts 2 and 3, where there are more slots to put RoF and more gold to pick up in general.

Varric's rune slot upgrade is available at the beginning of Act 1 and so is Aveline's Shield, whether that's Rosamund's, Lion of Orlais, or Courage.

If you are a SnS warrior, you can also put them on your shield. If not, you can place them on any piece you plan on having for a significant amount of time. The actual Rune costs 37.5s, so if you put it on something you won't be wearing for long, you may not even recoup the money you spent. For example, if you have a RoF placed on your boots, you'd have to pick up 21g just to make your money back.

The class DLC pack items are perfect candidates for all your Runes of Fortune. Other DLC items like Blood Dragon Armor, Sir Isaac's Armor, etc. are good for Act 1.

Even if you don't plan on using a piece for very long, in the long run it's worthwhile to put them on a piece of gear just to keep around as a "RoF set" that you can use when looting big payloads, like 1+ gold.

I already pimped out my mage with RoFs (cap, toes, hands and both boobs) since my prior post.

Although I suppose it's possible to bring avaline on the deeproads in my current playthough, it makes no sense from a story standpoint, because she'd have to quit her job to do it, which the game doesnt have a mechanism for ... and since I've always been a stickler for following the spirit of the story rather than the letter of it, that means she's not coming, and thus there'll be a reduced benefit from the RoFs since nobody present will have a shield or armor slots.

Cap, toes, hands and boobs will just have to do in my case.

Well, I entered the deeproads with Hawke (mage attire) equipped with 5 RoFs, and Varric sporting one on his chest. We entered with around 7 gp, and upon returning to kirkwall, I finally remembered to check my purse after a brief visit to the vicount and the chantry, and found I had 84gp and a sackful of gear still waiting to be sold off. Not a bad haul.

Thanks for the $$ tips, everyone. :)

Not directly relevant to ROF, but useful for money making - different merchants seem to buy your stuff at different rates. Highest rate is Martin at the Hanged Man. The difference can be 100% or more. Was surprised when I started to notice, maybe someone else can verify if this is correct or just a bug on my system. Or maybe someone else has mentioned this before.

I've never paid attention, but it's true that different merchants can have different buy/sell rates, so I doubt it's a bug. An it's very interesting to note, so thanks for posting!

Ya know I forget about martin almost everytime I play. I think I've perused his goods one time, so thats a great tip. He's the new Gorim, but less obnoxious about his fine noxious wares.

Yep, if you think about how much money you make throughout the Acts from selling stuff you don't need - especially class-specific armor which you can't use - then you probably left a lot of money on the table if you (like me before I caught on) sold most of your stuff where you make the big purchases i.e. Magnus on the Wounded Coast and the Black Emporium. These two merchants buy your stuff at 50% or less of what Martin is willing to pay. Ridiculous...

This may be connected to the discount he offers when you give him the location of his cargo. I do not think there's any difference in selling price among all the other mechants.
It does make sense, of course, to limit selling the most expensive items untill you can access Martin.

Great find! It is known that he gave a discount as iLikeBWgames said, but no one connected the dots to find that he gives more for selling items too.

SB - that is a simple technique that can go on the OP in one line of text and can earn people a lot of money.

Actually I just went around to all the different merchants and could not confirm darkly18's observation. The selling price of a high-end unique did not change. What was I doing wrong?

Wanted to share another observation when I saw sb's and theendcomes' posts. I run on PC so am not sure if this works across systems, but I just checked and Bloom sells for 8/20/9 at Martins and 3/20/89 at the Black Emporium. Not sure how to calculate the percentage but that's how my numbers show. Could someone else verify this is not a bug? The other observation I wanted to share is that Martin actually buys my runes at double what I spend to make them. Again, not sure if this is a bug but would welcome verification from others. This looks like an exploit in any case - like BG2's stealing and selling to thief merchants ad infinitum...

Wanted to correct my earlier post - it's not all runes that Martin buys at a higher price, I only verified he buys my Runes of Devastation at double the cost to make them. He buys my Runes of Striking at 1/3 of the cost to make them, so that doesn't work. Hope I didn't mislead anyone too much.

I play on PC too.  I'll go back and try to verify what you found. I was comparing shops' prices for the Celebrant, and everyone was giving the same 3g and change, though I failed to check the Black Emporium.
Can you verify how you responded to Martin during Finders Keepers? You can either tell him the location of his cargo straight up (for 2g, 800xp reward), bribe him for more money (4g, 1200xp reward), or not tell him at all which I believe prevents him from opening the shop.

I definitely responded by bribing in the game I checked. This could be why I noticed no difference in his shop. I'm pretty sure I have a character who did not bribe him, so I will check that later too.
