I got an art book with the Collectors Edition of Mass Effect 2.

Recently, I looked at the concept art for the Human Reaper and started to wonder about the process of making/growing a Reaper.

So, I started to wonder, how did we go from this:

to this:

After looking at this picture in detail:

I came up with a theory.

At a certain point in the process of creating a Reaper, they are positioned in the outer shell like this:

In the concept art image, you can see the Reaper's face on the underside of the abdomen and a massive brain above that.
If this is an accurate depiction of the orientation a Reaper's skeleton is, they're essentially flying backwards and facing downwards. :sick:

Also, it appears the hips (which the Human Reaper does not have) are also present, due to the "legs" near the spinal column.

Counting the limbs and relating them to the skeleton, it appears Reapers have 6 arms, 4 legs and 1 tail.
Do you think they have enough tentacles? :o

And then I started to wonder about the relative size of the Human Reaper to the fully mature Reapers.
Big as it is, it's still relatively small compared to Sovereign.
Do they grow larger as they get older or near completion?

I also started to wonder about the interior structure of a Reaper.
Sovereign was mistaken for a Reaper spaceship several times until the truth was discovered.
If someone was walking around inside him, wouldn't they see things that hint he's not an actual spaceship?
In this order, hips, spine, ribcage, skull, brain, hey, this is a giant person I'm in!

And to finish this graphics fest, while I was working on this theory, I was replaying the end of Mass Effect.
I couldn't resist looking up at this point and trying to find Sovereign's face:

Unfortunately, I couldn't find it.
Can you see it anywhere in the picture?

Nice post :)

However If the scale in your last picture was to be correct, the human Reaper (shown approx half the length of the full grown Reaper) would need to be approximately 1 kilometre long..

He addressed the scale in his post. He said that, big as the human reaper was, it would have to grow substantially for it to be the size of Sovereign.

He then went on to speculate that perhaps Reapers continue to grow after "birth" or the human reaper had quite a bit of growing to do.

I don't really buy the idea of metal growing..

My guess is that the human Reaper wouldn't look anything at all like Sovereign or the rest of the Reapers. I think EDI stated that the Reapers took on the form of the species used to make them.

From what we know the Reapers are made of a combination of organic matter and nanotechnology. I suppose they can "grow".Surely the final result won't be just a sosia of the Sovereing with a terminator attached in his back, the reapers in the fleef in the end of ME2 are not all of the same shape. But I guess that this could be the general idea.

If you look at Sovereign just after Joker hits him with the final shot in the SR-1, When his body lights up, there doesn't seem to be any kind of skeleton formation on the underside. There are also a few shots in the game of Sovereign's underside that don't really show anything like in the pictures above. It could be shielded by armor, but I dunno.

Bone doesn't grow on its own, either. We have osteoplasts and osteoclasts that continually lay down and pick up material. Just substitute nanomachines and voila. It's really not a hard concept to buy.

Me either but there's some sciencey mumbo about reapers being part organic, so they could in a way.

There's some sciencey mumbo I was on about :D

So in conclusion, this is the species Harbinger originated from:

Edit : STILL can't believe how accurate that looks, lol

Yeah, can't even imagine what that species could look like.

No, I'm serious. The closest thing I could make out is a dolphin. Sorry for being vague ><

But yeah, I can't figure this one out. It's so weird looking.

No offense taken man, text can be taken in many ways. :D

This one is unique in that it has a lot of gaps/holes. First Reaper I've seen with a design like that.

Indeed. I can't tell if gap in the middle is indeed a gap or just another J looking armor plate like on his back there. He doesn't seem to have any "Thanix" like cannons, but still has some smaller tentacle things.. Lots of frilly like stuff towards the top. the blue light armor on top does seem to seperate until the big armor front.

To me, this one doesn't seem like a fighter. Maybe it carries troops or something. Armored up to get in and drop the infantry. Maybe it's a scout. Doesn't seem to be a Sovereign like fighter, though. Be interesting to see this in ME3.

It looks as if he could be an aquatic being. Would explain the holes and flippers/wings for maneuvering underwater? The frilly tentacles for crawling on the ocean's surface? Very interesting.

I'm probably just looking at it upside down, haha.

I guess we wait until someone shows up with an answer or different idea, because I have no idea what this one is.

OP - What did you mean by, "Sovereign was mistaken for a Reaper spaceship several times until the truth was discovered."? Don't you mean Geth?

Well, think of it this way then. When we grow we're basically processing food that we eat into biological substance (over simplified I know).  So for the reapers it may be the same thing, when they "eat" they're just processing that substance into that biological/metalic black goo thing they're made out of it.
