for some unfathomable reason the summon mabari spell does not behave like most sustained spells. most of them will remain on until you specifically toggle them off. but no, not the mabari. that you have so resummon each and every single time you change area. and even worse, you have to wait for the cooldown as well
so if any of our talented modders could find a fix for this it would be greatly appreciated

I'm not sure that it wasn't meant to be this way. When I played DAO with a ranger pet summon, it did the same thing. So unless it was a bug there too, I'm inclined to think it was done on purpose. But if a mod can "fix" the mabari in DA2, that would be nice. :)

I'd forgotten about the ranger pets, hadn't used that specialisation much, party due to the fact that I'd always forget to resummon pets just like I do with the mabari now...

I still think we need a mod that changes this. You are not summoning him with magic, he is supposed to be a loyal and faithful companion and once summoned should remain with you until you either tell him to go home or he become injured and must return to heal up.

I wouldn't mind there being a several minute cooldown after he has been injured and must return home, but otherwise he should be with you the whole time once he is summoned.

One of the issues here is your home.. When you enter your home it would be awfully stupid to have your mabari still tagging along behind you and have it sitting there in your home at the same time. Makes for rather awkward scenes where your pet and your companions interact with each other and it's also standing behind you...
I am not sure if BW just took a short cut and saved the time it would have taken to develop scripting that was bug free to meet all the conditions of when the pet was to be out or not, I do suspect they deemed it not worth the time and effort with the tight deadlines they were under from EA.

well they scripted it to dismiss your companions when you go home, I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to do the same for the mabari. having to resummon after leaving home would be infinitely less annoying than having to resummon every time you enter a new area

I ran a mod that reduced the ranger pet cooldowns to like 1s. A crude way to get around the game dismissing the pet but was effective. Seems like a quick and dirty mod to solve the same problem with DA2's dog would work as well. Would be up to you to not abuse the resummon/immortal pet thing though lol.

it'd certainly help, although I suspect I'd still forget to resummon sometimes

There was a mod for the first one and Origins that auto summoned the pet when you changed locations.

Anyone found/made one for DA2 yet?

http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=418 is what you're looking for.

The best thing about Rangers in DA:O is that, while summoning your first pet, you can summon a second pet. With three Rogues, Morrigan, and a dog whistle, you can have four doggies and four bears at once... cutscenes get interesting and you'll definitely realize when you've forgotten to re-summon them.

that's for Origins, not DA2 sadly

So far as I know, there's no Permanent Summons for DA2. What I did is just have "Self: Any - Summon Mabari" as my first tactic. Since he doesn't scale with the enemies, it triggers just about every time the cooldown expires... unless he's frozen in place 50 yards away yet again.

Will give that a shot. Thanks!

sadly tactics only effect non-controlled characters and the companions dont have the summon mabari spell. I forget to summon the mabari most of the time as it is, I'd definitely forget to switch to a companion and back

I found myself not bothering with my mabari half the time... He never seemed to actually follow me correctly, often stood by while enemies attacked me, and got stuck in caves / dungeons!

Considering he isn't even controllable it's just not worth it on Nighmare.

"Go dog! ... No, not right into the Fireball I just threw. Damned mutt."

The pathfinding's not the greatest in this game.
"You ordered us to 'Hold,' but Varric was telling ghost stories an' I got scurred. We'll just clump up in this doorway, so you know where we are."

Mods that turn Mangy the Mabari into an Ogre or larger might have the side-effect of making it harder to get stuck inside a rock or the like. I haven't motivated myself into trying it out yet.

I was looking through the files to mod and found the summonwardog.rim file but couldn't find anything useful in it that would change anything. I'm hoping that we find a way to decrypt the DLC files because I'm betting what we need is in those files.
