I have been playing Da2 flawlessy since its release on march 8 til about a day ago. I have made it to Act 2 with all the classes just fine. The title says it all. Now when i play i experience heavy lag to the point where i am forced to quit. I am able to play the first one or two minutes before the game just takes a nosedive. I have tried updating my nvidia drivers, reinstalling and readjusting settings millions of time to no avail. But as I said before i've had Da2 for weeks and only now is it giving me problems. Anyone else experienced this and have a solution?

Could be a few things, I suppose, but at first blush I'd say you need to check your temperatures. When PCs begin to overheat, they'll throttle back performance (sometimes dramatically).

You can use a program free like CPUID HW monitor to monitor system temps.  A link for that and some other troubleshooting stuff for DAO is linked to the solutions round-up in my sig.  Some should apply to system issues on DA2.

Beyond that, if you want further help from anyone, probably best to post your system specs and OS information.

Overheating doesn't always necessarily have an immediate effect. You might have been playing games for a long time just fine with the GPU running rather hot. Even so it can still cause problems down the road, because prolonged exposure to high temperatures tends to reduce the lifespan of the hardware and in the worst case scenario the hardware can start to show defects after a while (and defects can start to happen completely unexpectedly - I had a GPU go boom on me just a few months ago, completely out of the blue - the card never overheated, it just...started acting up and then a few days later it died).

This is why I'd suggest following the other poster's advice and check the running temperatures on your machine (GPU and CPU especially) but also, very importantly, check the performance of your hardware in other highly intensive situations - for example try another high end game, or better yet, try running a benchmark test such as 3dmark or unigine heaven, as that is something you can easily compare to the results other people found who are running similar hardware to yours. If your hardware severely underperforms in other situations, then that could be a sign that something may be damaged. If it performs fine in other intensive situations that would rule out a hardware problem of some kind.

If there is a possible hardware problem, and the laptop is still under warranty, it's better to discover this sooner rather than later so you can get it fixed or exchanged for free. :)

If the laptop ONLY has this problem in DA2 and the temperatures are not critical, then I'd suggest checking all the software. Something may have gotten corrupted. Try reinstalling the GFX drivers, directX (you'll need to use a DX9 redistributable installer as the webinstaller wont give you a clean reinstall), possibly PhysX and finally reinstall the game.

If that still doesn't solve it, try thinking back to when your DA2 performance issues started - did you download, install or update anything at all prior to that? It might not be an purposeful update either, it could be something like an auto-update from windows or your antivirus or firewall software that screwed up something. Also try scanning the laptop for any viruses or malware.

Out of curiosity and because it might help other players who run into the same issue, what did you do to solve it?

What were you doing when the lag occurred? Were you in combat with a lot of sustained effects running? How heavily modded is your game? Mods contribute to RAM usage, so they have a tremendous potential to impact your game. How does your Origins game play? Did you ever experience similar lag with that?

It just started happening recently out of nowhere. It's always the same...I start the game and it plays fine for a minute or 2 then it starts to run slow as shhh. If I rerun the program again...same thing...fine for a min or 2 then slow(settings on low). I haven't modded dragon age 2 at all, beyond the dlc. However DA:O(when i played it) was modded crazy and ran on the highest settings fine. I've never had this problem before.

Still putting my best money on overheating. You should also make sure no other programs are running in the background.
