Firstly, congrats on getting so high in the rankings (whoo UK!)

Q1, Did you use shapeshifting at all and how usefull was it? I have some reservations about giveing up so much firepower and utility to run around and hit someone as a bear when surely a warrior could do so better.

Thanks alot! We tried our best, just had a bad time on the Xbox and both team Hungary and Bioware Community were racing ahead early on, they were definitely skilled.

We did have a go at shapeshifting, not myself personally, but we found using magic just seemed to be far better. That is what we were thinking about, we would rather be slinging all these spells from the back than running in and risking damage, whilst denying your strong spells. Maybe it's got a really good side we didn't see, but we stayed away from shapeshifting.

Did you use Threaten/Taunt at all? How effective are they?

We did use Threaten on our Tank, and it proved useful. He was certainly drawing the main bulk of the aggro whenever a mob came at us. There was always an enemy or two that was not interested in him, but for the most part he was gaining all the attention with Threaten.

Thanks for sharing all that Paynejb it sounds like the tournament was a blast, you didn't get first but it must of been worth everything just to be there period,

Can you go into a little bit of detail on aggro/threat and anyway that the AI selects it's targets? For example did you ever find the mobs rushing your squishies even when your tank was doing his job?

Is a back-up tank necessary for the majority of the game or for only a few select encounters?

I have a question, how was the tactics system? Did you use it at all? If you did was it good enough to leave a character alone and just focus on one party member? For example, If you used the tactics system on, say, Morrigan, whom I noticed you used quite a bit (if not exclusively) would you have been comfortable leaving her to the AI scripts that you could set?

So, a healer is a must have?

What about rogueskills(Traps, lockpick i.e.)? Were they necessary?

Yeah, that seems to be a big question about healers, answered it a few times. A healer is a must have, yes, unless potions become in large supply later in the game. Because at the start - they're few and far between.

We stayed away from traps, really. We didn't think spending the time to set up a trap and wasting it would be as productive as going in and fighting, although for playing a game without time constraints, I would most definitely test it out further.

I am, without a doubt, planning to have the lockpicking (Deft Hand or something) talent levelled up. We ignored it alot ourselves, mostly because we ruined Leliana a bit, but there were so many, many locked chests that we couldn't open because we had not levelled Deft Hand up alot. So if you want to be lockpicking, it's a good idea to keep it boosted early, because the chests quickly level up.

Thanks for the post man, grats on a good time, looked like a lot of fun. This might be too spoilerish for this board but, what specialization quests had you guys come across by level 10?

Nice thread, good try for the competition.

I hope they will patch the bugs soon because it sounds like there are some serious ones in there, not gamebreaking but serious.

A couple of questions.

How "squishy" did your warrior class characters feel? Can they take a good beating even without shields?

Did you notice any type of defence with just weapons? like a two handed user parrying?

Did you see any sweet killing moves? X D

If anyone in the party dual wielded how was the damage shown? single number for two swings or we talking seperate number each swing?

What specalisations did you get access to during play? if any? where they unlocked at the start?

Hey, congrats on getting to 5th!   You beat the bajeezus out of team US at any rate, hahaha.  I was rooting for you guys and for belgium/netherlands after the US died based exclusively on how you guys held your skull.

I have a few questions.

1: Did you get to use Arcane Warrior or unlock it or whatever?  Can you do it by level 7?  If you did find it, how did you unlock it?  What were its abilities?

2: (Just read your old answer and saw you answered my potion question -_-;

Did you find archery useful compared to melee combat and magic?

Also, did dog and Shale have their own abilities and how many of them?

Thanks for answering questions you lucky, lucky bastard.

Wow, thanks much Paynejb. I'm going to have to rethink my party now.

One more question: Now that you've had an introduction to the game, what character/party are you planning on using for your first run through without a time limit?

No problem! I'm just answering from what I found out on this quick rush through, I think it would be good to test out any party you have in mind, because we really would have loved to test out set ups if we had the time to do so.

On my first run through, I think I will most probably go with the Human Noble Warrior. Without a doubt, the easiest class to get to grips with the game - you start with the dog, as well, and the dog is an awesome character. Definitely worth considering him. We were planning to ditch the fella in our planning, before we found out how powerful he is.

Ideally, I would like to use

Human Noble Warrior (Tank Sword/Shield set up)
Dog
Leliana OR Morrigan (I want to test out how good Leliana could be under the right circumstances, and there are alot of traps/locked chests in this game that she would prove useful for.)
Wynne (For her exceptional healing skills, a definite must-have on the first playthrough I feel, unless you feel extremely confident.)

First, many thanks for this thread! here are a few questions I had regarding your experiance.

Did you get to fiddle with the scripts for combat tactics or did you just use default AI. How much did you use the pause feature to micro manage abilities?

It sounds like you completely forgo a rogue most of the time for mage damage, did you find chests or doors that you had to pass up because of the inability to pick the locks, was this common?

Did you get to develop the coercion skill at all, if so did you find it helpful in story progression?

You're quite welcome! I hope I can answer these well enough.

We hardly touched scripts for combat tactics, actually. Perhaps it's just me, but I'd prefer to switch to a character and make them use that potion or heal that ally, as oppose to hoping the AI initiates it in time. The pause feature worked very well to micro manage, and once you've got used to it, it takes hardly any time at all to quickly switch characters and activate abilities. I made much use of it.

We found no doors that were locked for a rogue to pick, though that could be down to where we went, but there was plenty of chests. Many, many of those we came across. It was a pain, having to avoid them because Leliana hadn't got a high enough Deft Hand skill.

Oh, I pressed for the coercion skill to be taken at character creation. I'm glad we did, because by the end of our playthrough, we realised that it was useful enough to boost to Level 3! There are plenty of persuade checks in the game, in story dialogue and so on, it's always great to have that ability to sway someone using it. So yes, coercion is extremely useful, not only in main story progression, but many sub quests.

You're welcome! I thought it'd be nice to impart some of the meager information I found out about the game whilst I could. It was fun all the way through, and a real buzz when we were fighting our way up from 5th at the second elimination.

The tank did do a good job of aggroing the mobs with his Threaten talent, though there's always the stragglers that decide to avoid the tank and go after my weak characters. Yeah, this did happen an awful lot, especially when choke points were breached and they went straight for my back line. Your mages are always at risk, it seems, and it's crucial to keep them far enough behind that you have time to attack anything that gets past your tank and heads for a mage/archer.

We never really used a back up tank, we always had our main warriors as the main character Tank, and the dog. The dog was insanely useful at crowd control with the tank, Dread Howl stuns a huge radius around him and could seriously cripple a mob of enemies long enough to deal damage to those escaping aggro, for example.

Hey there Paynejb. First off let me say great job in the competition and I wish I could have been there to enjoy it with all you guys. I wasn't rooting for the UK team but you seemed to hold your own well enough through most of the day (and on into the wee hours of the night). If you are still up for answering questions I have a few in mind you might be able to answer without giving away too much about the story or events in the game itself.

1. Did you find it reasonable to try and use characters against their "grain"? You mentioned that you had Morrigan pick up a basic healing spell just for good measure. Given more time or higher levels do you think you could have turned her into a decent support caster (not just a damage caster), or is she too heavily invested into being an avatar of fiery wrath to really change her style?

2. What was your take on the class specializations? What specialty did you choose for your main character, and why? How much did it end up influencing how you used your character?

In the short time you were using Leliana, did you find that backstabs did a good amount of damage in comparison to the other party members damage?

The Dog seemed to have two attacks on his hot bar. What were those? One was that howl, as you mentioned, but what was the other one? Just an attack? It seemed like a bark. I'm wondering if that's an aggro generator.

how tactical is this game? they've always marketed this game as a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. so i'm kinda expecting some battles with specific tactic requirements and some that require just mediocre tactics (mage debuffing, damaging. fighter up front and an archer).

also, my playstyle was having my main as a fighter-mage (upfront and on fire) minsc, jaheira, Khalid(bg1) dyneheir(bg1) aerie, nalia and in ToB sarevok. will i be able to transfer such a party to a 4 man dragon age equal? that is if you know :)

are there any ToB style battles? i played with the Ascension mod and i found to my enjoyment (weird huh) that taking down two dragons and the other goons took about 30 minutes without getting boring. did you experience any long challenging battles?

and please tell me you enjoyed that event, i'd give my spine and left thumb to be there, i watched it all 24 hours and since Denmark wasn't represented i put my countrys support on the shoulders of Team Bioware Community (sorry UK).

Oh, bugger. You know what, we should have written that down when she joined. It would have been the smart thing to do.

I only remember a couple of spells she had, one being of course the Spider shapeshift, Disorient, Weakness, and.. you know, I couldn't confidently say. I just remember her having lots of spells, but I dont remember which ones we exactly made her learn and what she started with. Sorry!

First, thanks for the info - much appreciated.

Now for my big question - do you think Morrigan could be turned into a decent primary healer, even if she can't get the Spirit Healer specialization? Otherwise we're being forced to take Wynne.

Jesus christ, I thought your game was on Hard mode.

I have no idea how NIGHTMARE difficulty will be possible with the problems some of the teams had with the ogre. Holy ****!

I have a question about the bugs.

When you say they were not game breaking do you mean you didn't need to reload and it was only a short minor annoyance for you? The rest of my questions would be too spoilerish to ask :P

You're welcome! I thought I should do this, it helps keep me awake a bit so I go to sleep at a reasonable hour, haha. Been awake since 7 yesterday.

You know, we didn't find any at all! Of course, we didn't go actively clicking on every quest avaliable, seeing as we weren't sure it was worth the time versus story progress.

HOWEVER, some shops did sell 'manuals' for specializations, though were far too expensive for us to buy at the time. Going into many, many gold coins that we didn't have.

I forgot one more major question: With Leliana, could she use Rogue specific talents (dirty fighting, below the belt, deadly strike) with her bow and arrow? Did she ever apply archery backstab damage? Were bard songs noticeably beneficial enough to justify removing her from combat?
