Dragon Age 2 is an understated masterpiece.  In the vein of Empire Strikes Back, it leaves you feeling gloriously unsatisfied and begging for more.  I've read complaints about its lack of epicness, about the end of the game being uncontrollable and inevitable, and about the romances being lacklustre, but I refute them all.  The beauty of it is its understated nature and the realism invoked by the gritty ending which, intertwined with intimate friendships and subtle, realistically private relationships, make it a gloriously involved experience.

Loved it.

Agreed, it has it's flaws and it could have been a better game, but still, it is great and I enjoyed every minute of it.

It's by far the best bioware game to date, and I desperately hope that bioware stays on the course they took with this installment (and hopefully, that other dev-teams follow). So yes, I'd agree.

You're right, it is reminiscent of The Empire Strikes Back.

I liked DA:2 better than DA:O, overall. While it has some flaws, I couldn't stop playing once I started.

I am a huge fan of the current style of Bioware games.

I think they are creating a niche that no one else is even trying to fill.

Three words: Voice Acted Protagonist.

In the end, you just have to realize that although they take place in the same fantasy world, they are different stories about different people.

I adore this game.

I absolutely adored it too! I loved Origins don't get me wrong, but when it ended I felt quite self satisfied and forgot about it. I can't stop thinking about Dragon Age 2 - it really involved me. Brilliant!

This, pretty much. I've replayed DA:O a zillion times of ocurse, but there were times when it did feel like a chore (Deep Roads!), even on the first, fresh playthrough. That didn't happen here.

I would propose that instead of "skip the fade", those talented modders create "skip the act 1". lol.

It isn't that bad of course. It just seems a bit tedious due to my rush to get to acts 2 and 3 every new game. I think I've completed the entire game 4 times now. Still really enjoying it, but act 1, or large parts of it, are becoming a bit of a grind.

The good news is that once you recruit the people you want, you can always just go to bartrand and cue act 2 regardless of the scores of undone side quests.

Pretty much in agreement with all of the above. Some people on here are just over reacting. Most likely the same that did with ME2. You can't please everyone, and DA:2 sells numbers seem to have rectified it. Over all I love it and I'll be playing it much much more than I did DA:O.

Now if only we can get a save import fix, and some of the graphical errors cleaned up.

Though i did like Origins' some aspects more (selectable races, combat encounter design, non-combat skills and long dungeons such as the Fade and Deep Roads *dodges rock*) i have to say that overall whatever BW is doing is working for me, so please keep doing it :wizard:

I'll start whining after BioWare produces a "Command & Conquer 4" level of travesty  (hint: not DA2 ;))

I actually enjoyed Act I most of all, actually. I spent 21 hours on it, and was loathe to leave! :P

I would love a "skip the blightlands" mod, though.

100%. It has some small and big flaws but overall it is much better than Origins and I'm happy with the direction that the game took. And I don't get why everyone wants a rehash of the same old fantasy story. I guess people wanted another Blight/War and more Origins and in DA3 another Blight/War with even more Origins because that is ''epic'' story for them :P It was more personal and more about Hawke himself rather then the world which is great. I love my Warden but I could never be as much attached to him as I did to Hawke after only a single playthrough. Also the cliff hanger ending was very well done.

DA2 has done well it's first week.  But we'll see how well it does now that people are familiar with the game.

I finally finished the game last night and loved every minute of it. It had its flaws, but it was an excellent game in the things it did well.

I liked my Cousland more than my Hawke, but to be honest, I play the game for the companions and the lore. DA2 added more lore and had a more interesting setting than DA:O (though of course, Origins was more varied). Companion-wise, Origins had more memorable companions overall but DA2 developed them more (and Merrill's my favorite rpg companion in general), especially how some of the companions actually HATED each other, which was great.

I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, I'd consider that overstating its better attributes, but it's not nearly as bad as some people say. It's a good, solid game which suffers certain flaws that bury a lot of untapped potential. Despite that, it's a fun ride and has that BioWare charm, anyway.

Thats almost word for word what I was about to say. Get out of my head!

It does have its flaws and there are some things that annoyed me immensely but there was no point where I didn't enjoy it. I personally think its a better game than DA:O and as soon as its patched I'll be doing another playthrough. I definately preferred the story and atmosphere of DA2. I saw someone on another thread compare Hawke to John McClane from Die Hard, constantly in the wrong place at the wrong time and getting caught up in things which quickly get out of hand. I loved that feeling, especially at the end of chapters where it felt like "one wild night in Kirkwall".

What he said.

Hawke was a great protagonist. Genuinely funny, heroic, or dickish. Lines delivered were awesome and sucked me into the world. [he didn't speak ENOUGH imho]

Story was good. Act 1 brought you into the world and set things up. Act 2 and it's culminating events were awesome. Act 3 had potential but was obviously rushed and insanely short.

Ending was utterly atrocious but I don't like cliffhangers when there's no guarantee of a sequel.

What killed it? By now everyone knows what sucks about the game [extremely repetitive combat, repetitive maps, game is overall short, act 3 leaves a bad taste in the mouth] and the problem is you don't notice those things till you are well into the game, and they DON'T GET ANY BETTER.

But it can be fixed.

That said, voiced protagonist works. You guys sold me on that. I wish my Cousland was giving the prebattle Denerim speech or shouting down Loghain at the landsmeet.

But please, TAKE YOUR TIME if you do DA3. That's all you guys needed to do with DA2 and you didn't do it. Don't make the mistake again.

I think that's a very fair assessment and have to say that I agree.  It's fun enough, but it definitely wasn't a masterpiece in my opinion.

Haha, perhaps I was a bit excited when I wrote this. Perhaps masterpiece is a bit of an overstatement, though in a sense it not being a masterpiece almost makes it more charming, a bit rough around the edges, eh? I just found it wonderfully involved.

Masterpieces do not recycle areas like this game nor are full of chores like bring X to Y.

That said, this is not an awful game, not even close. Perhaps the day it gets te bugs gone, I´ll be able to really enjoy it.
