The thing that I loved about Dragon Age 2 more than anything was how gut-wrenching the decisions you make are and that there are tragic occurrences that are completely outside your control. You are going to lose both your brother and sister in the course of the story and your mother is going to be killed by a psychopath that you cannot stop. That's powerful. You can only contain the Qunari and the Mage v. Templar situations you cannot stop them.

Hawke is a hero by every account but not so much that every problem in a chaotic city is fixed with a wave of the hand. Your companions have their issues but are also very compelling people as well. Big political questions are brought up - one of my favorite parts of the game was the Arishok calling out the nobles for exploiting the poor and corrupting their city. It doesn't feel right defending them as the Champion knowing that when you finish saving them they'll continue to feed on their poor. It's not supposed to.

Great story, great game, and looking forward to where they go next. Orlais would be cool, especially if a looming Ferelden v. Orlais, Mage v. Chantry Thedas sized war is at stake.

Both my husband and I loved DA2. And we've been playing RPG's for a very long time. I certainly agree that everyone has a right to their own opinion; However, I don't understand where all the blatant hate is coming from. Zero scores should be reserved for games far worse than DA2. I don't get it.

I'm on my third play-through and I still can't get enough. I found the story very compelling. Sure, there are a few bugs and flaws, but over all it's on my list of the most fun games I've played.

As much hate as this game gets, it will be nothing compared to the amount of hate that will be shoveled upon Skyrim.

After 5 years without and ES game, there exists no way that that game could ever deliver what people expect of it.

I think DA2 is like a hater warm-up exercise.

In the end though, it is important to remember that the vast amount of detractors cannot be pleased regardless of the quality of the game produced. They are powerless to do otherwise.

haters GOTTA hate.

Odd you don't see them rolling threads about the lack of choice in that......

I very much enjoyed DA 2's story and can't wait for the next installment. My only issues with the game were purely mechanical, reused areas and annoying bugs mostly. That aside the story itself was enthralling and kept me hooked from start to finish, the punchy new combat system was also a lot of fun.

To be fair, Oblivion kind of deserved the flak it got, and they promised to make skyrim more like morrowind again. Fingers crossed ;)

I enjoyed the story and think it will get more appreciation as people examine it and realize just how deep it is. I enjoyed how the character of Hawke just felt like a person caught in a massive tide and nothing he did could really change anything. It was going to happen no matter what he did. His private life and the city he lived in where destined to be torn apart no matter what he did. I don't understand the need for every story to be epic and to have a giant evil that is going to destroy the world at the end. Was Huck Finn not a good story because Huck and Jim didn't fight an archdemon, did the Great Gatsby lack characterization because it was under 200 pages, was The Dead a bad story because it ended with a guy looking west and left everything to inference?

Hah, so true. Can't wait until release day when the forums are full of 'Oblivion was the best game ever, Bethesda has sold out!'. Happened with Oblivion. Happened with Morrowind.

I loved DA2, which I consider a happy feat given I was very dubious going in. This was the sort of story (a story that skips merrily through huge chunks of time) that I usually can't get into at all, about a protagonist I didn't yet care about, in a city I didn't care about, with people I didn't care about. Bioware succeeded in making me care about them all, and then sent me on a brutal emotional rollercoaster. I was also worried about the short development cycle, which I'll say right here DA2 could have definitely benefitted from at least two years worth of one, so please, to those able to make such decisions, give your dev team slightly longer next time.

The Mass Effect series still remains my favorite, but I loved DAO, and DA2 is a close second. Maybe it's because I didn't let myself get taken in by the pre-release hype, which I find is always a bad idea. Who knows? I'm just hoping for a patch and the toolset to come out quickly.

Gotta say I agree to some degree. I remember getting really frustrated at the fade part of DA:O so much in fact that when they mentioned the fade in DA2 I got genuinly scared I had to torture myself through another 2 hours in something similar. However in DA2 it's short and **** actually happens. Kudos.

just finished my first playthrough, got some time to get it done since it was nightmare and it was "trying to do alllll sidequests i ever saw".

my conclusion - very good game. more of it, game ending, in fact, is better somehow then the game overall. because it is a truly dramatic ending, leaving you with questions and the feeling of accomplishment at the same time. more of it - me2 for example, is a much much better game overall, but ending is times worse. i would say, merge me2 level of gameplay+da2 ending end you will probably have my most favorite game ever.

still, kudos, Bioware, you've made a very solid and interesting game.

I agree with the OP. DA2 was a great game. It was different than DAO, but that does not make it a bad game, just different. I greatly enjoyed the story, and I felt it was refreshing with a story that was not about saving the world. Not saying I don't like saving-the-world stories, but sometimes it is nice with something different. I also loved my Hawke, her dialogue and voice acting was great.

Finally a positive thread! I have to say, I'm really excited for when the hate dies down/moves elsewhere, so some real critical conversations can be had about the game without being interrupted by mindless trolling. DA2 was fantastic, the story was so incredibly original, so unlike any game I've played before. It was fun to see the focus actually be Hawke, and not the conflicts he was involved in, though they did serve to shape him at the same time. Which is the most ingenious part of the game, since the player is Hawke. By the end I found myself completely revising my stance on mage freedom and my opinion on the Qunari. The events of the game really made me rethink all the preconceptions I carried over from Origins. It's truly remarkable how Bioware heavily impacted the player themselves.

I liked DA2 a lot. Hard choices, nothing was black and white, no long sections that got boring after awhile. Saying that, the characters felt a bit flat, and parts of the game felt rushed. In DA:O I liked talking to my companions, I missed not being able to talk to them unless they wanted something in DA:A and DA2. I've played through twice in DA2, and now I've gone back to Origins.
Overall, I'd give it a 7/10. Maybe a 6.5/10...

DA2 was a good game. It was not, however a great game, nothing near a masterpiece whatsoever. Its deep in the shadow of DAO and no amount of false praise will pull it into the light of day.

I'm sorry, but after finishing DA2, i mourned for Bioware. I truly hope this is not how all their games will be.

I really liked DA 2. I give it an 8.5.

Story Depth: 9
Graphics: 9
Voice acting: 9
Too much reuse of areas: 6.5 -- I don't mind reusing tiles, but dang entire areas to back into over and over again. But I was more story focused than area focused.

I really liked this story. I liked not having the fate of the entire world dumped on my shoulders for a change. Rather than save the world, Hawke alters events. The politics, and associated story lines really were tight. The game was more gray than black or white. And I got to do something I wanted to do in DA:O: leave the Chantry and Templars in disarray.

My first play through was 48 hrs. which I found really good. Then I do pretty much all the side quests to see how the world twists and turns, and find out how I can mess up things. I really hope there are some add on packs to this game.

So when am I going to get to upload my Hawke for my avatar? I didn't use the premade.

I don't know how the people praising this game can function in normal society, I guess you really can get alot accomplished with very few brain cells.

With comments like 9 for story depth, DA2 was fantastic etc, the franchise might as well be dead, they are pandering to the lower IQ crowd, and even most of them aren't buying the game now either.

It's like there is an army of Mikey Laidlaws on these forums saying ZOMG!!!!!! I did something awesome with 1 button, this game is so epic, did you see that!!!!!

Rather well from time to time. Some companies like Capcom know what their loyal customers are expecting so they will receive money from me when Street Fighter X Tekken comes out.

I doubt they will receive an average rating of 3-4 out of ten from the community anytime soon. I wonder if same can be said for any future release of Dragon Age if this current trend stays the same.

If bioware keeps making continuously better games, selling continuously more units, while the Baldurs gate fanclub cries their eyes out - I'm perfectly content with that.
