I've been playing BG TOSC, SOA/TOB for about three years or more and still love the game.

I recently upgrated from the basic game(s) by adding a Patch for TOB (26498) and the installing Easy Tutu (update Mar 09).

I am playing BGI/TOSC now and really enjoy the enhanced graphics etc that come with Easy Tutu.

My question is what would you do next to make the game even better?

I've thought about "Big World" and that sounds cool but I am not technically savy so I have to be careful and take things slowly - plus I've got a PC w/4 19s right now so I'm really reluctant to let him go.

Any help is appreciated folks.

Thanks.

Easy question. If you ask for 1 mod more, I'd suggest NPC1Project: all the joinable NPC's get very well-written BG2-like banters and a real personality of their own.

Better question still is 'what 2 mods would you suggest next': NPC1Project+Unfinished Business.
Even better 'what 3 mods': NPC1Project+UB+BG2 Tweaks (despite it's name, it's used for tweaking Tutu installs as well),
Better still 'what 4 mods': NPC1Project+UB+BG2Tweaks+Sword Coast Strategems

But I usually play with about 10 mods. But for starters: use at least NPC1Project.

*edit: added  some clarification. SCS is insider-gobbledigook. But dive into the mods and you'll be an insider using 10+ mods very fast :D

Thank you. Great feedback.

Do I ned to start with a "clean installation" with these or can I install them and continue with my current game?

You should check the readme's. With some it's possible to continue with a current game. The safe route for everything to work properly is starting a new game though.

One last question. And thanks for your time.

Have there been any mods that would bring the older D&D games up to speed?

Icewind Dale, Heart of Winter and those? Just wondered b/c once I found BG the older ones just didn't compete.

There's not that many mods for Icewind Dale. None that I know of that completely change the story. Icewind Dale is a linear hack-and-slash afair. But there is a mod that gives you the BG2-like feel of travelling with a party that interacts with you and adds 5 custom npc's with their own banters, to be found at www.pocketplane.net/mambo/index.php

There are a few mods for IWD, not as many, but you can check out modlists for both games.

As for mod recommendations, it depends what you want. There are a lot of tweak packs and suchlike which make some nice changes to the game, fixing bugs, ease-of-use etc. I would suggest Unfinished Business, as above, and some of the SCS tweaks are nice too (there are a lot of SCS components which make the game a lot tougher, though).

If you want, say, extra quests, the BG1 Mini-Quests and Encounters pack is a nice one which adds a few relatively well-done mini-quests to the game, many in the early game (though the extra XP, though not massive, can make the game a bit easier for low-level characters). One I would recommend is the Grey Clan Episode 1 - this is a tough, higher-level quest which becomes available in Ch 5, but it's one of the better one IMO. Aside from one fight, it's challanging but not stupidly hard, gives you a couple of powerful items but doesn't shower you with ridiculous loot, and by-and-large has well-written dialogue etc. (little things like punctuation and grammar can make a mod seem really shoddy).

Hey Fred, Thanks for the tip on the extra quests especially. That's one thing that keeps haunting me - I want more BG.

This is such a great game. I'm gonna add the mods - especially Unfinished Business and the NPC1 Project. I guess for me the problem is I don't know what I don't know so the help ya'll provide is really appreciated.

Okay, so same question but I've moved on to BGII. I have only the TOB (26498) patch installed which I had to install for Easy Tutu w/BGI.

I want to enjoy some of the things ya'll are talking about for BGII but am overwhelmed when I look at all the possibilities.

My system is old but runs the game well. I want to add mods to BGII but wanna install them one piece at a time in an appropriate order. Would ya'll mind helping me with ideas again? Thanks.

I agree with what was said above, and would also suggest that at least once you try the Nalia romance in SoA - not so much for the romance part, but because you get to kill someone you've probably always wanted to kill.

I'd refrain from content-changing mods the first time, as there is enough to explore and npc's to meet without new quests, npc's and items.

Mods I would advice are:
BG2 Fixpack for bugs that were left in the game by Bioware (bugs that were discovered in the years after the last TOBPatch came out),
BG2 Tweaks not in its entirety but for the tweaks you yourself would like. Once you have experienced the 'you must gather your party' voice-over once in a BG game, you will probably want it to shut up for all future playthroughs.

Sword Coast Stratagems II contains some nice tweaks as well, but is mostly about making the game harder, for use when you've mastered the game so much, it becomes too easy. The good thing about SCSII, it stays within the rules, doesn't use cheese to make the game harder but makes enemies behave more intelligent.

What about the banter packs? Which do you suggest? I plan to play straight through from BGI/Candlekeep thru TOB. I look around G3 but am gun shy about downloading and putting things into my game unless I feel confident that it's what I'm looking for - I gain my confidence from you folks. Thanks.

Btw - tried to edit out my goofup in the post above but couldn't do so. Not sure what happened there.

For the BG1 part, definitely the BG1NPC-project. This mod was inspired by the amount of interaction you could have with the npc's in BG2. In BG2, npc's are a lot more talkative (and want you to do their personal quests) so installing a banter pack for BG2 isn't necessary. The extra BG2 banters (and npc-mods) are more useful if you've played BG2 several times, got tired with the regular banters and want to add something new.
