Fenris does not make a move on you unless you flirt.  So at least once you hit that <3 icon if you actually had a heartbreak icon come up with him.

This is incorrect.

For both Fenris and Anders, you can hit the heartbreak icon without having ever flirted with them.

For Fenris as well?

Yes.

I know for Anders, but Fenris I thought was designed to NOT start something unless Hawke started it.

The broken heart icon does not indicate that a companion has 'started something.'

Ok, I'll have to trust you on this, because I did not see a broken heart on Fenris until romance scenes -- and the only time I've seen the broken heart for Anders/Isabela is when they were flirting with my character (telling them they weren't interested) and for Anders, when breaking it off.

However, the OP was complaining that he had to end things with Fenris.  That Fenris was flirting with him.  And that most definitely does not happen.

Edit: Ok, there IS one broken heart for Fenris at the beginning.  I stand corrected.  I would imagine picking it would mean no more hearts appear, so it's not necessarily a bad thing.  You also don't get an approval hit for taking it.  You don't get the same bonus as you do for chosing the flirt option, but you do get the same as you do when you pick the neutral option.

Second edit: You know what, after replaying that conversation, I retract what I said completely.  Fenris does have a line that can be taken as a feeler-type, though it's not an outrageous flirt.  You can shut him down completely, or you can remain neutral, or you can encourage him.

So I guess if you're sensitive to being called formidable or whatever the male line is, there would be a flirt in there.  So I think I'll bow out of this conversation now.  Though I wonder if there weren't a way to shut him down completely at the start if people would complain about that...

I find it true to life. Gay men hit on straight men in real life too. Same with girls. Frankly Bioware should be praised for the inclusion of romances that, like real life, are diverse and have no gender rules! Yay Bioware!

Hmm this Anders thing is weird, I flirted with him three times and in the end he said "no I'll hurt you". I know that it's just the beginning and it will lead to more later, but Hawke is taking that as 'not gonna happen'

Who is this Anders that hits on everyone and they have to rival the hell out of him to get him off their backs? LOL no matter what I do my friend meter goes up and up and he won't even look at me sideways.

Just popping in to say that this is exactly what happened in my playthrough. Anders didn't flirt with my character on his own. I had to do all the flirting and I had to be consistent with it too. So I'm a little bit surprised that some people think he is coming on to you.

I actually missed him coming over because I didn't flirt with him enough.

He didn't kiss my guy unless I actively flirted with him. And here I wanted to keep being snarky.

I see the Dragon Age world as being rather open about sexuality in general and I accept it. It's fantasy. We are so used to a reality where sexual repression is encouraged that I think it's good to participate in a world where nothing is taboo. Men and women can talk openly about their desires. Same sex coupling isn't kept under wraps. It's rather refreshing to see a piece of media showcasing sex as it should be. A natural part of life.

While I like this idea, I don't think that's the case. Aside from the protagonists of the games and their love interests, are there any same-sex couples in the actual lore?

A pair in the  Wardens and Harren and Wade.

Possible Zev and Talisen, depending on how you read it. Leliana and -- oh, god, I just blanked on her name.

I didn't read this whole thread, but...

Or even limit your choices by what you choose to be as in, Merrill is into you because you’re a mage, but Fenris wouldn’t go near you romantically, but he will be your friend.

Forget that. Fenris rivalmancing Mage!Hawke is the best thing ever. Best. Thing. Ever.

I'm baffled, really. Why do people keep complaining about having more options?

Because it's pretty gay.

Honestly, I just want Bioware to add in some genderqueer folks and see the **** storm there. Oh, lord, a TG LI.

I'm off to go pray to the Maker for a miracle.

I'm a lesbian, though I have a thing for playing as gay men. So honestly, to be it's a relief to be able to play a fantasy world where it doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl, and homosexuality isn't treated like such a taboo. It's probably what I liked the most about the atmosphere in the game, in fact. You have to realize that you being straight means you get to take a lot of things like this for granted. But for us gay folks, it's rare we get a game that recognizes us. Please remember that.

In addition to the ones mentioned, non-protagonist couples also include Oghren's wife Branka, she was in a gay relationship with Hespith.

Is Wade and Herren as a gay couple canon?! Oh, I was SO hoping they were, but I was waiting to see it blatantly in dialogue or writing. They are the best pairing, end of discussion.

We need to stop being catered to.

By being treated like everyone else.

: /

Actually, I was thinking about it, and the amount of options that are available stayingthe same no matter your sex .. it must be what a non-LGBT person feels like, I thought.

It was sorta kinda a nice feeling. Like, I got warm fuzzies and felt "normal" for a mo'.

Yeah. It's been confirmed some time ago. I mean, it's understandable why someone wouldn't pick up the subtext, but I thought it was quite evident from the way they acted towards each other.

:P I tend to find gay subtext in everything, so even though Wade and Herren were so obvious, I try to wait until I see it in Word of God before I start proclaiming it. But you really have to be wearing "Everyone's straight!" goggles to not wonder about those two, I think..

For decades games have been made to satisfy straight males.. making most female characters overly sexy and flirtatious. As soon as we have a game in which every sexual preference is equally expressed we get complaints.

I'd like a companion (doesn't have to be LI) who doesn't conform to modern conventions of gender identity.

It wouldn't have to be transgender in the more specific use of the word - biologically X but identifies as Y. You could have a culture that views mages as a third sex or one where a woman only has certain rights/privileges by becoming socially male.

Shale is a pretty reasonable example of something like that. Originally a woman, but more of an asexual being after 500 years.
