What I think what BW has done is totally dumb. They should have introduced some characters as straight, some as bi and some as gay. It is more realistic than turning all the romance-companions into bi characters.  They should have approached this sexuality issue in more creative manner, where the sexuality is part of the characters' personality. For example, Merrill is straight and Isabela is bi.  Well..., BW you have done the character development in your past games in great manner, so don't try to dumb down the character development now.

The romances i DA2 are just that, romances. You'll need to actively pursue the romances in order to get to the -ahem- love scenes. (which, btw, consists of the two of you lying in bed. Then, the screen fades to black. And one you (as least from what I understand) have armour on while in bed...

If your main Hawke is a female, every one will want to romance her, if your main Hawke is male, everyone will want to romance him. The NPCs are Hawke-sexual (thanks to a bioware forumite for this definition), not bi, straight or gay.

Actually if you would have paid attention, or read into it anymore, you would have seen that each character is not "bi" they are simply romanceable depending on your picked gender. I.E. If you made a female Hawke, Anders is straight, if you make a male Hawke, hes gay.

I think some insight into sexuality and culture in this world is necessary. My issue isn't homophobia, it's just having every romancable character being bisexual is just lazy, especially when we see 99% of the NPCs in male/female relationships and we don't see homosexuality in everyday life in this world.  Is homosexuality accepted in this culture, tolerated but frowned upon, and how does this relate across cultures?  Do dwarves have the same views on sexuality as humans or elves?  What is the chantry views on sexuality?  Does a religious person have a different view of homosexuality in this world?

Throughout history views towards sexuality has changed.  In Ancient Greece for example, it was ok for two men to have sex, but it was frowned upon if one male was seen as submissive in the relationship (they both had to be aggressive manly men for the relationship to be ok).  If BioWare is going to keep putting homosexuality in this world we need some kind of reference of what it means to be homosexual in this world.  You don't just put it in the game to get points for being "progressive", you should put it in to say something about your world.

I strongly believe that sexuality should be unique to a character. Having interchangeable sexualities is pandering, it damages the believability of the characters, and worst of all it passes off sexual identity as no more integral to a character than hair colour. We want to treat everyone equally yes, but not at the expense of their very identity.

On this matter, it's damned if you do, damned if you don't. When Bioware limits romance options to certain characters/genders, people whine they can't romance their favorite one (Tali anyone?). When Bioware makes every character romanceable, people complain they don't want all that gayness/lesbianism around them. What gives? And to people up in arms at the thought that a homosexual may make a pass at them in a video game, I'd suggest a little introspection about why it bothers them. Frankly, it says more about their insecurities than about Bioware's intent.

Every charcater is not bi.

Your choices as a player set the preferences of the companion.

They are offering you multiple versions of the companion.

It is more practical than having 30 companions.

I dont mind having gay/bi characters, but what does annoy me is when I played I got aggressively hit on by males when I made no attempts at all, but any of the females I had to actively pursue and get shut down. Even when isabella invites me to go back to her room, I go to the inn to talk to her and my hawke rejects buying her drinks without any choice!!

I didn't see his post as homophobic at all, in the past Bioware catered specifically in DA2 they just simply made everyone bisexual. He's certainly entitled to state his opinion and yes it probably would make more sense to limit sexual preferences of a character to their characterisation but it just means now we won't have anyone complaining there isn't a romance for them in the game.

Why is opening up that content to everyone "dumb"? It's a tradeoff. Either you use sexuality as a bigger part of characterization and close off content to minority orientations or you open that content up to everyone and make the characters' sexuality ambiguous. I think the tradeoff is worth it, and the dev team must have felt the same.

This is such a silly thing to complain about. There are much bigger flaws in the game.

I do agree that Anders should have been written as bi, if as some say he is straight when you play fem Hawke and gay with male Hawke. But othervise why does this matter?

I felt a great disturbance in the Forum… as if millions of trolls suddenly cried out in bigotry and were suddenly silenced. But seriously, this is locked in t minus 5.

That said, I see what the OP's saying, and I don't disagree. In fact, this is my exact viewpoint as well, but I see the problems with it. In order to have some straight, some gay, and some bi characters, you would either need to have an enormous cast of characters which you probably wouldn't get to explore very much, or you'd have one character of each gender and sexual persuasion combination for each game, which would get dreadfully formulaic and boring. Bioware probably made the right call sticking to what they did.

Because you can avoid it in game. Say no. Romance over. Move on. The end.
You simply have a problem with the idea that your companions are bi.
