Because hearts can be taken as just more friendly rather than sexual. You can't really mistake the sexual symbols for male and female with an X through it as anything else.

Honestly? I know what the male/female symbols are, but what does the X represent? No? Kisses? Forbidden? Crucifixion??

Well since they are sex related symbols it's obvious.

In place of broken heart you get male/female with an X through it.
In place of a heart you get the gender symbol for male or female.

It's then very clear what they mean.

Yes it makes no sense from a business stand point.
Absolutely no one who is interested in this content has money and buys videogames.

Yet the number pales in comparison to everybody else who bought the game. I mean honestly how many gays could have bought DA just for said content? They were people who were probably interested in such RPGs to begin with.

How many outright hate it?
How many have refused to buy it because they hate it?
You have bought it, have you not? Money for BioWare either way. Good business.

Each demographic has just as many options for romance as the next. A huge, and awesome step forward in my book.

Because men want everything for themselves all the time

unless they don't

which is the case here

then they don't want it all of the time

or something like that

I am quite unsure.  Need to continue studies.

There should be no gay romances at all, except female on female. Anders' advances made me shudder. Developers really went too far this time.

If that made you shudder perhaps you should sit for a moment and revaluate your sexuality.

I think a few people in this thread need to go back and read David Gaider's comments again.

And if there is any doubt why such an opinion might be met with hostility, it has to do with privilege. You can write it off as "political correctness" if you wish, but the truth is that privilege always lies with the majority. They're so used to being catered to that they see the lack of catering as an imbalance. They don't see anything wrong with having things set up to suit them, what's everyone's fuss all about? That's the way it should be, any everyone else should be used to not getting what they want.

If this is a real issue for you, I would like you to stop and think about it. Imagine for just a minute that you are gay. Ok...ready? So how many games have you had to suffer through where characters have made unwanted advances toward you? That would probably be any of the games you have played with a romance option. That is why people have asked for the romance options to be expanded.

I personally don't see what all the fuss is about. I have had unwanted advances in real life and it's just not that big a deal. Be respectful of your fellow human beings and all will be well.

I promise I'm not being deliberately obtuse, but I'm not sure what they mean even now

I mean, I do, but is the symbol my gender? Or the NPC's? And how does that mean "romance"? I just don't get it :P

Also imagine seeing such symbols on a tiny monitor/tv. Would look like gibberish

granted those symbols look like gibberish anyway. Wonder who the hell made them, they are nonsense. We should revert back to symbols the Cherokee used

The reactions to the S/S romances are much more fun than any videogame.

Boy, do you need to be straightened out! Did you know that for many people, such as both myself and my school-age son, these video games are their only access to sexual interaction? Take away video game ******-romances and I guarantee the bullycide rate will go through the roof! I would venture to say that these video game romances are how 80-85% of the people here first experience sexual pleasure (this is not a made-up number but is taken from my own research). This is why it is vitally important that ALL video games include gay romances, and a few should be gay romance-only so that even homophobes experience them (but they should not be advertised as such).

I introduced my son to video game romances at a very early age because I wanted him to be correctly socialized, but at the time there were few if any good video games that offered climactic homosexual encounters. Therefore I was forced to game with him and say "this characterhad a sex change" and things like that so he would at least get a taste of what gay people are like.

Therefore I explicitly veto the idea that we remove gay and straight romances from video games, as they perform a function that would otherwise be unperformed if you get my drift.

Ah HA! There was a magical item in Awakening which meant Justice didn't have to be your tank, Oghren or your PC could've been one, book of forgetmenot or whatever, but basically you could respec anyone to your liking, I never took justice anywhere.

Yes. It's much clearer , it can only have 1 meaning. You forget the golden heart is later , you get normal looking hearts early on and broken heart can be taken as saying something hurtful.

Romance is not sex. Since the romances in DA2 et al end in sex this needs to made clear with the correct symbology.

That's what I think, but other people are different and we have to respect that ...that is, until the argument starts turning into a big sneaky hate spiral.

Whatever happens next is up to the fellas at Bioware though. If all else fails, I'll make some DA erotica and people will make friends with me.

In my mind at least.:o

Indeed. Too complicated. If they don't understand : <3 the male/female symbols are lost to them.

Female symbols will probably make them think someoe has breast cancer.

Granted, you had more options.
But for me it's a similar situation. Why?

I.
Can't.
Stand.
Oghren.

Lousy, irritating drunk. I want to hit him with a shovel whenever he speaks!
So if I didn't want to tank it's either Oghren who I loathe, and Justice who I dislike. But hey I sucked it up. Just how games are sometimes.

Considering the female symbol is widely used in some countries to symbol breast cancer treatement no it's not clear.

You don't have a normal looking heart ever.

It's either golden or it's broken. So yeah nice try. Either you played the game with your eyes closed or your spewing BS.

Why should I? I am a straight male and I do not appreciate male characters coming on to me during the time I am relaxing with an RPG. Now female vs female romances make me somewhat curious and I am glad to explore those options in a video game. But male on male romances have got to go. I play games for fun and I don't want to be subjected to something like that.

Ok, no, I have the solution. What you do is you have, in place of the representation of a heart, a representation of the entire history of human evolution (I would suggest the evolution of all life, but that might not fit into those little circles) to depict the continuation of the species into the far future from this single moment of union. In place of the broken heart? A desolate world where no life ever stirs, to demonstrate what would come of it if everyone were to act so foolishly. What could be simpler?
