Because hearts can be taken as just more friendly rather than sexual. You can't really mistake the sexual symbols for male and female with an X through it as anything else.
Honestly? I know what the male/female symbols are, but what does the X represent? No? Kisses? Forbidden? Crucifixion??
Well since they are sex related symbols it's obvious.
In place of broken heart you get male/female with an X through it.
In place of a heart you get the gender symbol for male or female.
It's then very clear what they mean.
