We need to be tolerant of other peoples views. To be completely honest however, I must admit, there is more in your face homosexuality in Dragon Age II than I've actually experienced personally in real life. . . and this is coming from a New York City native.

"In-your-face homosexuality?"  Seriously?  I grew up in Oregon, lived in Minnesota for 15 years, and now live in Wisconsin, and I've seen far more than this.  If you really live in NYC, I call exaggeration.  It's not like Anders whipped it out and slapped you in the face with it.

...Now THERE'S an image.  Huh.

:OLOL:O

I call exaggeration on that too. NYC is massive....though some people choose to only go about their life in a very small radius.

LMFAO

Ok, Ok, I recant the whole "in your face" homsexuality thing. The parade in the village alone would destroy that argument.
However I will say this. I do believe that the media is responsible for making homosexuality look more ubiquitous than it really is.

On the subject of preferred character genders, I suppose I could drop by again with my two cents.

As I've mentioned before, I'm a straight, male gamer. Growing up, I always played video games with male protagonists, and it was as natural as anything could be. But... then I played BioWare's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic; my first non-Japanese RPG.

I suddenly had a choice, and picked the female gender for my main protagonist. I've realized, since then, that I'm much more comfortable with playing female leads in RPGs, and the only reason I ever choose to play male is for the male main's exclusive romances in BioWare's RPGs. I've also become a huge fan of Metroid and its female protagonist within the same timeframe, and have found myself drawn to both books and movies with female mains.

Strange, perhaps? I've considered if it's just that I (for some reason) have an easier time relating to female characters. I've also been thinking about if calling myself a "straight male" might be misrepresentative; maybe I'm agender or... some variety of transgender?

*shrugs*

My first romance choice in Dragon Age: Origins was Leliana, anyway. My second was Zevran, which was entertaining and kind of sweet despite that he is neither David Tennant (Tenth Doctor <3) or John Barrowman (Jack Harkness <3).

*shrugs* can't say that's the case in my country. But maybe that's because nobody makes such a big deal about it over here. It's just this thing that some people do. Maybe that is also why I can't quite get all the outrage.

I prefer to play female leads as well, but it has never caused me to question my sexuality. Maybe I just like variety, and since almost every game or movie I see has a male lead I choose the female when the opprotunity presents itself. I would suppose I just like some variety in my stories every once in a while, and since variety is so rare I take it every chance I get.

Its pretty common everywhere in the US as well, most people do keep it low key though.  I truly believe the main reason, for male gay people at least , dont hit on men without being careful in their choice most of the time is because its not entirely unlikely for the flirt to be met with hostility.  I think this thread alone proves there are plenty of people who would turn hostile at such an advance.

It has been less then a year since the last time I heard about a man being beaten for being gay in St. Louis, so yeah, the threat of hostility is very real.

Well I'm female and I prefer to play male characters, so how's that for throwing a spanner in the works? ;-)

The reasons are numerous and too complicated to go into on here, but it's certainly not clear cut.

Regardless, BW's stance towards inclusiveness in DA2 is just excellent.

In a thrid person game I'd rather stare at a female butt than a male one. Only if there are lesbian LI's though.

It just goes to show that there is no one way to play a game, is all. ^_^

I certainly prefer playing female characters, and I definitelely prefer it when those female characters can romance females, but a male lead and heterosexual romance doesn't prevent me from playing either. It's just a more enjoyable experience if my interests are properly represented.

Sweet, raging christ. Are we still on this? Is this still a thing? Talk about overreaction to pixels...

It is not an overreaction, as the pixels are just the fuse. the real topic is about tolerance towards people of a different sexual orientation.

The overreaction in question was the "wahhh, a guy who doesn't really exist flirted with my manpixels."  I got no problem with tolerance, I just can't understand why people are still flipping out.

Neither can I. Seriously, people are more upset when some other manpixels (I love that word, thank you) flirt with theirs than an angry Qunari hacking and slashing at them. Or even killing them. Uh... huh?
Being flirted at by Anders is a fate worse than death???

I sense much hypocrism again in this posting.

You don't seem to get the words "unwanted attention" yet I am sure some of you would scream of horror and complain if Oghren would be advancing at you. That would cause such noise that soon there would be forum postings where you would be sharing the horror with tons of other "victims" and demanding for your $wet_dream be in next DA instead of Oghren.

To put it differently: if you would had always been catered with gay romance exclusives and then suddenly Oghren would advance bis and lesbians and, hmm, Wynne bis and male gays the wrath in forums would have no limits. This goes further still. If gays would be majority then heteros would be minority and gays would not treat heteros well.

(I would want to take suggestions where I can go discuss English language. I am interested to know why "seducing" ir replaced with "hitting" and "photographing" with shooting. I think the reason is some kind of "me moar cool if me hits and shoots".)

Ah, it's not so much questioning my sexuality as it is questioning my gender identity.

Of course standard definition of sexuality are relative to one's gender, so I suppose questioning my sexuality might be a consequence of questioning my gender identity...

I found Tenth Doctor to be very, very human.

As for Angel... I'm assuming this is a Buffyverse thing, and I'm really not too involved in anything Whedon that isn't Firefly. :P

Indeed.

I have I think an almost equal number of male/female Shepard saves through both Mass Effect games, but I relate to mShep better than fShep. I only play fShep to romance Kaidan, and when playing as mShep I've romanced nearly all the available LIs, but my main 'canon' mShep runs have been with a gay, and sadly very lonely, mShep. So far I'm on my 2nd DA2 run, and at this point I think it's going to be a very long time before I roll a fHawke. I prefer being able to romance male characters with a male PC, just as you like to do the opposite. And just as I have done in ME, I'm also capable of playing a straight character and engaging in straight relationships in a game. But it's so very, awesomely wonderful to have this opportunity, at least in this one game, to be able to play almost exclusively as the gender of my choice and to have an actual choice of who to romance, again within the gender of my choice.

The reasons why I relate to male characters in rpgs is complex and to do with my own gender identity. Like I said, too complex to get into on here. But omg, I have the choice - and I can't begin to express how wonderful that feels

I am sorry to answer to Bob with this but I have always wondered why those who say "i'd rather stare at a female butt than a male one" stare the male butt in the first place.

I wouldn't sure,  he's unhygenic,  flatulent, and a little crude...  but, there's a great guy underneath all that all food stuck in his beard.  Someone just needs to bring it out in him,  and he can even be kind of sweet.    I might be a little freaked out if Shale started giving me unwanted attention though...  and even Alistair up to a point.  He's far to childish.

That's almost irrelevant since that's not the case. The majority will quite often oppress the minority. But, even so, there are plenty of heterosexuals who aren't infuriated or disturbed at having a male character proposition their player character. (I'm not entirely sure this is what you were talking about so I apologise if I misinterpretted your words.)

It does raise a good question though: would any male players be complaining on these forums about Isabela coming onto their male Hawke without him initiating the conversation? This is assuming that the player is not interested in romancing her, of course.

Believe me, I know what unwanted attention is. I have been groped at my breasts between my legs or on my butt numerous times. Maybe that is why I'd just shrug and tell Oghren to go back to his bottle, if he came on to my character verbally.

And majorities almost never treat minorities well. That has nothing to do with sexuality - it is, sadly, human nature.
