Indeed.

I have I think an almost equal number of male/female Shepard saves through both Mass Effect games, but I relate to mShep better than fShep. I only play fShep to romance Kaidan, and when playing as mShep I've romanced nearly all the available LIs, but my main 'canon' mShep runs have been with a gay, and sadly very lonely, mShep. So far I'm on my 2nd DA2 run, and at this point I think it's going to be a very long time before I roll a fHawke. I prefer being able to romance male characters with a male PC, just as you like to do the opposite. And just as I have done in ME, I'm also capable of playing a straight character and engaging in straight relationships in a game. But it's so very, awesomely wonderful to have this opportunity, at least in this one game, to be able to play almost exclusively as the gender of my choice and to have an actual choice of who to romance, again within the gender of my choice.

The reasons why I relate to male characters in rpgs is complex and to do with my own gender identity. Like I said, too complex to get into on here. But omg, I have the choice - and I can't begin to express how wonderful that feels

I completely agree. :3

We can comment and argue on how well the game and romances are implemented but it's just fantastic to have some choice. We so rarely get it so I'm just happy it's there. I may not, personally, play outside my own preferences but I can also appreciate that there are options there for other people. I'm glad they can play the game the way they want as well. ^_^

I prefer to play female leads as well, but it has never caused me to question my sexuality. Maybe I just like variety, and since almost every game or movie I see has a male lead I choose the female when the opprotunity presents itself. I would suppose I just like some variety in my stories every once in a while, and since variety is so rare I take it every chance I get.

Besides, you know the saying:

"If I´m going to stare at a waggling ass for an entire playthrough, it should at least be a female ass"
:wub:B)

You know what? I don't stare at "waggling" male asses. Just sayin'. Hetero here.

I was quite flattered when Anders hit on me, but I managed to play to play the entire game being best friends with him and never extending our relationship past that. I don't think I even got any rivalry points for him.
I've always played bioware games as a male, except one playthrough of Jade Empire and one playthrough of Mass Effect where I played as FemShep while my gf sat there and made all the decisions. Gay people should be pumped that they are being represented in a video game period, especially after the way hollywood completely stereotyped them

I am sorry to answer to Bob with this but I have always wondered why those who say "i'd rather stare at a female butt than a male one" stare the male butt in the first place.

It's kind of just there on a 50" screen.

I don't stare characters' asses in games since... Well, since it's a game and it's a bit pathetic and sad thing to do. I'd rather stare at male arses irl.

I didn't see his post as homophobic at all, in the past Bioware catered specifically in DA2 they just simply made everyone bisexual. He's certainly entitled to state his opinion and yes it probably would make more sense to limit sexual preferences of a character to their characterisation but it just means now we won't have anyone complaining there isn't a romance for them in the game.

You don't like the game.  I get that.  But what are you gaining out of posting in every thread how much you DESPISE Dragon Age 2?  It's the very definition of trolling.  There are more games out there.  I'm sure you'll like them.  Do you like Mass Effect 2?  Well, there's a sequel coming around Christmas.  Although, for some reason, I have a feeling you're going to hate that game too.

And you're making me hate justicars....

I suggest that the reason some 'straight male' gamers feel so alienated is that we are simply not used to seeing equal billing of active female or gay characters in any media.  Comparisons of numbers don't matter - it's a perception issue.  Perception is a powerful thing.  I get that having an equal split is going to be confronting to those gamers who are more use to having majority straight males and the token woman or gay person.  I wouldn't be surprised if some people decide that the game is not for them on that basis.  However, I'm personally very grateful to Bioware for making games I - a female gamer geek since she got the red-booked basic D&D set for a birthday in 1984  - can so readily feel a part of.

Until recently, female characters have generally held passive or support roles in stories.  Around the late 70s, you began to get the odd active female protagonist, but she would be deliberately exceptional.  She never, for example, had female friends.  Moreover, her life was almost invaribly tired to the central male character's, usually as the love interest.  As a fangirl and lover of sci fi, I grew up surrounded by the message that most women don't count, and to be anyone of valuable you needed to be perfect and beautiful enough to attract the dominant male.

Growing up, I simply accepted that if I wanted to roleplay on the computer, I had to play a man.  Space Quest, Police Quest, Ultima, Wing Commander - the list goes on.  I never minded, because I didn't have any option.  I do remember my incredible excitement when one of the King's Quests finally had a plyable female lead.  But I also remember how crushed I was when my brother - my partner in gaming - refused to play because he "was no girl".   I was devastated, but I accepted it was more proof of the  old maxim that women will read books about men and women, but men will only read books about men.  In such circumstances, it makes commercial sense to publish books about men.  And to do the same with movies.

However, the side-effect of this is that many women are simply not going to be very interested in yet another medium that offers nothing more than subsidiary status.  No wonder there are so few girl computer rpgers!  Indeed, I'd suggest some women who are inclined toward the roleplaying feel positively alienated by many games out there.  I mean, I liked the Witcher as a game, but I actually felt like I wasn't ... well, welcome, playing it.   It is a game for men.  That's cool - if the designers want to limit their market then that's their choice (and undoubtedly a wise one, given their limited resources).  But I thank Bioware for being one of the leaders in making a game that I can also comfortably play.  The fact that I can play as someone who has some connection to my real self (albeit a very tenuous one) means I will invest a huge amount of time and money in this world. Probably a disproportionate amount of money, as I don't have the huge pile of alternative games that most male gamers do.

(I should note, too, that I don't get the same feeling of alienation playing, sat, the Call of Duty games, or Halo and Deep Space.  But these games were never about roleplaying or choice - they are about a central character who happens (for story and commercial reasons) to be male).

In saying that, I can accept that some men would feel alienated by a 50/50 male/female character split and the inclusion of gay characters.  It is confronting because it is different, and many people don't like difference (heck, look at the debate over the system changes for DAO to DA2 for proof of that!).  But men (and women) who genuinely do not want to play with female companions, or gay companions have a huge variety of games to choose from.  I have Bioware games (and a few others).  And my love and loyalty knows no bounds as a result.

Thank you very much of this posting, was interesting reading.

You know what? Staring at asses is the only thing I can do in DA2 - the alternative would be paying attention to the combat and the area, thus ruining every last bit of joy you can get out of the game.

Staring at other people is way more pathethic than doing so in a game.

Besides, most girls in games are more beautiful than the real ones, and this is even more true with men.

However, this is moot anyways.

As Varic says: "The point. Missing it. Ah well."

No and no. Maybe if beautiful = feminine/sissy/girly etc. Alistair and Zevran, for example.

Besides, staring someone a bit in bar/pub might lead to something more than staring so I don't see why it's so pathetic.

But, yes, none of this is related to the topic. :P

Why you think letting your eyes rest on someone's butt who is walking in front of you would be pathetic? I would recommend you to try it at times ;) Can be fun :)

Oh, I do sometimes.

But I always feel a bit cheap afterwards:unsure:

Edit: it´s fun though if you share the joy with a good friend and make bad jokes abut it:devil::devil:

Oh I don't know, we've been known to bring nations to their knees before. ;) Having pointy ears and romping through the wilds is all well and good, but I think I'd still prefer the company of a real woman.
