It's not the statement itself, rather, the tone in which he delivers that line. I know it's subjective and you can perceive it however you like, but when you listen to it closely, Anders sounds like he's flirting with Nathaniel. Awakening isn't concrete and irrefutable proof of his heterosexuality, mind you. He could've easily been someone who had an attraction to other men, but hadn't embraced that part of him yet. To be honest, his incessant declaration of love for the ladies felt more like a lighthearted way to deflect some underlying psychological damage than anything.

So no, I don't think his sexuality was retconned at all. DA2 only shows what's most likely always been there.

Nope, he's actually much more receptive and elated to be with a male Hawke. The doomsaying only starts to seep in during Act 3.

I've always regarded Anders as straight - this is all based on perception though. As with all things, people will believe what they want to believe and not necessarily what's right. Don't believe me? Then look at all the boy/boy fanart and fanfictions of straight men that people would LIKE to see gay (same can be said for female characters too).

Based on his tone of voice, his frequent remarks and the fact that he was receptive to female flirtation in Awakenings I've always regarded him as being a straight male. He's not receptive to flirtation in Awakenings from the male warden (the dialogue isn't available) which is why I've always drawn that conclusion. As for his potential 'dodgy' remarks to Nate and co, to be fair, have you never listened to men when they're arsing about with each other? There's a LOT of bromance nonsense and innuendo that gets thrown around that's largely meaningless. From what I've seen in those cases it's usually a "How far can I push it before he fresks out and backs down?" aka sometimes it's a competition.

You may find that the previous writer and character designer HAD intended for him to be heterosexual, whereas the writer who adopted him for DA2 may have preferred a different direction.

Whether or not Anders experimented with 'free love' and both genders while in the Circle remains to be seen and even if he was ultimately heterosexual there is NOTHING to stop someone experimenting. Sometimes you have to experiment to find out how you feel one way or the other so it would be perfectly plausible for him to have had a fling with Karl - however if this was the case, I would have preferred he talk to femme!Hawke about it too.

From a personal standpoint, as I said I prefer to think of him as straight. My perception of him has always been this way as I adopted that stance and grew fond of him in awakenings.

However, the fact that you're basically playing in alternate universe through each play through means that he has potential to be gay/straight/bi based on the player’s interpretation of him. If he doesn't happen to mention Karl then some people may decide he's flat out straight, while others may use their knowledge of previous playthroughs to point out he's bisexual.

A part of me does feel that he’s been a little retconned but this is purely based on my own perception and opinion. As other people have already pointed out, his backstory was never fully established in Awakenings so it’s very difficult to confirm or deny exactly what he should or shouldn’t have been. Regardless, given his sass and smart arsed remarks in Awakenings, if he was bisexual I would have preferred that he was upfront about it in DA2. Perhaps Justice’s influence has completely trashed the fun loving and sarcastic mage we all enjoyed – I wouldn’t rule it out, he seems a lot more deflated, exhausted and otherwise downtrodded nowadays. Keeping that in mind, the more quiet and contemplative aspect of his new personality might help to explain why he prefers to keep his past relationships a secret to avoid further drama.


TL:DR?
I personally like to think of him as straight but it’s not outside the realms of possibility that he’s bisexual. It’s something that wasn’t explored enough in Awakenings to be set in stone and only the original writer of him in Awakenings would be able to clarify that aspect of his personality completely.
