The more I play DA2, the more I like the Qunari and their religion. Wierd? Not really not to me. I think I've understood them enough reading about the Qun and choosing the right responses to make a good judgment of their society and religion. Here is why the Qun is bad ass
I. Everyone has a Purpose
While freedom is a foundation of Western society, it is an illusion. Are we really free to do exactly what we want? There are laws, social classes, trade sectors, and unwritten rules of etiquette. The most successful learn those rules, bend the laws, pick the right trade, and ascend to the top of the social classes. Not everyone can do that. The Qun dispenses with that game and assigns everyone a role that will help society. Those roles are chosen based on merit, not by birth like the Caste system of the Dwarves. In essence, the Qun is a more practical version of socialism - like a fusion between the three government branch of the United States and social order. You have the Mind, dedicated to invention, planning, management, government. The Spirit is religion, celebration, ritual. The Body is the military, construction, etc. Nobody's talents go to waste begging on the street or living a life of excess.
II. No Power Struggles
Each of three cannot exist without the other. That promotes teamwork by necessity and anyone who has a problem with that is kicked out and hunted down. When you look at the most successful empires or nations in human history, the ones that worked together were the ones that ruled most effectively. The Romans had the Senate and Caesars working in somewhat close harmony, until later on when they grew apart. The French and English had the King and their Parliament during the height of their power.
The Qun has taken religion and made it a third pillar, which is a recipe for power in and of itself, but not a religion that antagonizes the masses. As we see with DA2, it appeals to them. The poor, needy, and desperate are offered a role in the Qun a place where they have none. The Qun is a shepherd, to use a Biblical term, but not just to worship or ask for forgiveness but to have a place in a society that works together.
III. The Qun has your Back
In Act 2, we see Saemus Dumar and some elves suffering in the city join the Qun out of choice. They are sought after or killed and they go to war against the people who did this. These are not Qunari, the original race, but newly recruited members not of the same race. Would that apply anywhere else in Thedas? The Qunari have your back if you acknowledge the Qun and as we saw with their siege of Kirkwall, they will overpower their foe.
The design of the society of the Qun is, in and of itself, teamwork. The Spirit, Mind, and Body work together putting their individual agendas aside for the common goal. Not everyone is meant for that (Tal-Vashoth) but it's not like you're hearing about Par Vollen going to Civil War anytime soon because of them.
IV. Stronger sense of Identity
That seems like a joke right? You get a name you don't choose, a role you cannot change, and do what you're told to. One of the most profound things the Arishok said was answering none to the question of how many Qunari he has lost. To be Qunari is ironclad, unchanging, and eternal. A life lived under the Qun has purpose, benefits the Qunari society, and brings glory within their part of society. The poor, criminal, or "noble" will never know that kind of purpose. The only ones who do in Western society are the heroes and there are only a few of them as opposed to many who are not.
