I like the companions in DA2, I think they're fun and well written, however when it came to picking a romance I found my options lacking (crazy I know considering how many companions you can actually romance).

Isabella is... well lets just say she's been around the block and back, she talks about making love like it's inconsequential and meaningless sometimes, she's basically way damaged goods.

Merrill is a blood mage, she associates with spirits of the fade, has no problem with performing her goal using any means neccessary. Some also find her arrogant, naive and quite frankly a menace to society. She also has tattoos all over her face like most Dalish elves do.

Now before you get ready to lynch me, please read the below.

Don't get me wrong, Isabella is beautiful, gorgeous even. She's witty, has a great sense of humor, she fights exeptionally well; she's resourceful and knowleadgeble. Knows how survive and many would say how to really live life to its fullest.

Merrill is cute, personally I find her adorable at times (I blame the big sparkly eyes), she has a sweet accent - petite look and in many ways you could say she has good intentions and a kind heart when all is said and done.

But I really really find myself wanting just, a woman, one who doesn't come with a hundred problems and tattoos. One without the massive baggage or shaky morals. A pretty regular woman, who hasn't slept with half of Thedas or chats with demons on a regular basis.

I know a good character is like a real person, full of flaws, baggage and emotion.

Am I asking too much by wanting someone bland and normal? What do you think? Did you like Isabella and Merrill?

If you wanted a normal person to date, why don't you actually date a real girl?

Because they're not in the game so they don't apply?

I'm a girl, but I like playing the Bioware games as a male protagonist after playing the female protagonist to see what is different from the male perspective. I played both male and female Shepard in ME/ME2, male and female Warden in DAO, and I'm playing male and female Hawke. I find romancing the girls as male Hawke to be...lacking. I guess you have to be a guy to appreciate Isabela and Merrill, but they aren't what I would look for in a girl - lol. The only one I would romance as male Hawke is Aveline, and she's not interested. So my male Hawke is celibate.  He flirts up a storm, but won't commit to any of them.  What a playah.  B)

Origins wasn't much better in that regard. Probably worse.

- Darwinist witch who enjoys making people suffer for lulz. Also wants to have a dragon-god baby with you at the instruction of her shapeshifting dragon/demon mother.

- Delusional ex-nun/thief/assassin with abandonment and betrayal issues. Prophet complex included.

... Yet most people loved the romances in Origins.

Merrill was a little too clingy for me. Isabela is awesome.

You can actully by taking Merrill on enough quests with blood magic gone wrong, and a bit of rivalry, she'll come to see that what she did was wrong. Will even openly admit to it, course for gameplays sake she still uses blood magic, but I think in any game based off of that she'll lose the ability to use it, or should. Then again you can give Anders blood magic, yet in game he's way against it and such.

Thats what I did at least. So I liked Merrill, hate the pirate hooker though, well maybe not hate...shes just not my cup of tea.

Yeah, imho DA2 is actually a lot better than DAO, romance-wise.

I romanced Isabella as soon as possible and had her in my party the entire game. I'm not seeing a problem here.

My similar thought with the male romance options, too.  The only normal one was the dwarf, and he wasn't romancable!  In all my years playing RPGs, this was the first time ever I was hot for the dwarf!

None of the four options are normal and the male options aren't even really stable. Still, I'm not sure a normal person would really want all the drama and hassle being involved with Hawke would necessitate.

The blood magic is what won me over to Merrill's side, and I've even decided that rediscovering the legacy of Arlathan is worth it, despite the fact that my favorite Thedas culture was responsible for obliterating Arlathan from this world. :P

That's true.  In this instance, Hawke would be the one with the issues!  :D

Was disappointed that Aveline isn't romanceable, imo she'd be the obvious choice for my Hawke.
I totally understand that Isabela lives her life like she sees fit, and thats all fair and good, but I wouldn't date a woman with such a casual view on intimacy in real life, and since I model my RPG charecters after my real self, I won't date her in the game either.
Merril... sure, she's adorable... and incrediably immature, annoying and self-rightous... the good just doesn't outweigh the bad imo.

And who wants normal?  Jacob was the 'normal one' in ME2 and he gets a pounding in here.

What's a "normal" woman? I can't wrap myself around that concept really. There's no "normal" person really. In order to create an interesting character, there's need to be "personalities" that makes them stands out. Do you think Morrigan normal? Wynne? Leliana? Miranda? Tali?

There's no "Normal". Everyone is special and weird in their own way, the more you know a person, the more special and weird they become.

There is a normal woman. Her name is Aveline and she wants nothing to do with Hawke. Which just goes to show. only the crazy ones are available. That said, Merrill is actually quite reasonable if you talk to her and actually pay attention to the conversation. You can convince her to "give up" blood magic (she never really does since her animations all show it and she can still train it) or you can support her and protect her.
Isabella on the other hand is just a dirty, dirty pirate wench. Sure she likes you but you're gonna end up with something itchy.

Even if there was a normal woman that Hawke could romance, a woman who would stay at home, mind the family business, cook, clean and not go on crazy adventures because she doesn't have the skills....how long could she stand being around Hawke? He/She is always in some crazy life-threatening adventure and regardless of whether or not Hawke is more of a pacifist, a sarcastic and reluctant hero, or downright aggressive, Hawke just isn't home long enough to keep a 'normal' person happy.

I was planning on trying out Merrill's rivalry romance on my next playthrough for this very reason, it still doesn't change many of my other lacks of attraction towards her though, but who knows.

I definitely think hate is a strong word to use against Isabella, but she has her downsides I agree

That's a very good point, here I've been thinking how polar the romance options in the game are without even considering a relatively normal person might not want anything to do with my Hawke. You raise a fair question there hehe ^_^

No problem really, I'm not in any way saying the game is inherently flawed, I just wish there was a more normal woman to romance like it says in the title. If you enjoy Isabella's company in the game that's wonderful

Perhaps "a normal woman" was the wrong word, "a more normal woman" might have been more appropriate =] I'm aware in real life everyone has issues, with both their past and present, but I certainly think there are fare more normal women in the world than the very polar and intense (in some aspects) women you can romance in the game. That is just my opinion of them though hehe ^_^

I don't think Aveline is normal. She's raised like a boy, take a career that normally suited for man. Married young but lost husband to a tragedy, become gaurd captain of a major city, get involved in all kinds of crazy adventure with Hawk, married again with her employee....

Compare to that, I'd say a pirate **** who sleeps around is a lot more normal.
