I dunno... my husband didn't even play the Warden's Keep expansion and this still popped up on the documents.  It did mention that if Avernus didn't live to complete the research, someone else would take his place (and then it went "...")

I was wondering if it was something relevant or just a reason to have them there and not help.
I'm currently doing a playthrough where I had Alistair show up at this point along with Carver. They refused to tell me what was going on and Alistair does a dramatic look back and Maker save us all speech before leaving.
Ooooh dramatic.
Nathaniel also told me they were on a quest they couldn't tell me about (and Carver, again being an ass) and he had allies they couldn't speak of. Wondered if that was at all relevant either.

I'd like the think they are leading to something. Probably wishful thinking but a girl can dream.

There's about a 50/50 chance that we'll find out in a game, comic book, novel, net-show, or whatever. But judging how many loose ends from DA:O and its DLC there's no way of telling if we'll ever find out because it's not the story that BioWare wants to tell.

I'm not being overly rude either. It's just like the ME2 dark energy tease except you can read about what dark energy is and does and come up with some small and probably wrong guesses. We're just not given enough information to really let speculation run wild.

Same here. We know the Wardens have pressing concerns in Orlais. So? That's not enough for a tease. It may pay off in the future and we can all go, "Oh, that's what that guy meant." But it's not enough information for us to all just have these crazy theories about it.

It's likely Darkspawn related, because they're Wardens.

But if we had more information... we wouldn't need to guess, would we?

Maybe all the loose ends are leading up to the final game. See, it's fun to speculate with little information! But you're right, it probably is Dark Spawn related, unless there's a new enemy.
