So Origins wasn't up to par for 2011? Is 2011 the year of mediocre faux action-RPGs according to the Chinese calendar?

So his answer to the people who complain about combat is to fiddle with the difficulty?!

Also what kind of kool-aid is he drinking? He should sell it, because obviously it has the power to make people blissfully unaware of even the harshest of criticisms.

Just a bunch of BS sales talk that avoided all the hard direct questions. Really disappointed in that interview.

He isn't going to crap where he eats guys. Lets be serious none of us would. However, I do agree that it was more gentle than any interview should be.

At least until he has to start promoting Dragon Age 3.  Then we'll hear no end to how awful and uninnovative DA2 was :?

If thats the case, any chance we'll get an apology to go along with those sentiments?

Exactly. They seem to have no problem crapping all over Origins to prop up DA2.

So... another useless interview *sigh*

His direction for the franchise seems pretty clear, I guess it's time to look for RPGs elsewhere if we actually want some depth and complexity. At least he isn't assigned to TOR, which lets me keep some hope for it.

He side stepped pretty much everything just like a skilled politician. The interviewer didn't even ask any hard questions like "Why the use of recycled maps?" "Why no auto attack?" and "What are your thoughts on the DRM controversy?"
Basically the guy had to praise the game, if he said they made mistakes that would have made him wrong...we wouldn't want that would we?

You do realise he represents a public company don't you and that means he can't just come out and say stuff like that.

Did you not see "If he said they made mistakes that would have made him wrong" part? Guess not.
Laidlaw works for a big corporation and they run just like politicans so they are going to intentionally side step the real answers. Why make your company look like they made mistakes by admitting it?

What a useless interview. How many times are they going to ask him the same questions?

How many times are these threads going to be brought up just as an excuse to bash Bioware?

its not a Bioware bash thread. Its a "the interview was a bunch of soft ball questions with no real answers to the problems of the game addressed" thread. Just because people are pointing out this interview and the answers given are sugar coated doesn't make it mean they are bashing Bioware. Get real

So when exactly did he join the DA:O team, or get handed the reins, relative to BioWare's sale? I'm very worried for DA3 if he has nothing better to say for DA:O, more so than I already was. And bringing up San Andreas as any kind of reference to untapped RPGers? I made it about 2/3 through that game, twice, the one GTA that rambled too long. GTA:SA, if anything has more in common with Fable. You spend all that time working out, running, eating to fatten up just to collect girlfriends that do gamey things for you, like change your paint or call in a health up. They're basically slightly curvier demon doors. Not exactly where DA needs to go, I think.

i think i wanna throw up in my mouth having fable and DA being mentioned together =(

speaking of people that consistently lie, look no further than Peter M. Tho his lies come in the form of prerelease hype. Fable 2 was straight trash. That was the only game i played in the series. At least the slot machine minigame kept me busy for a while. Black and White, horrible. Whens the last solid game this guy released? I dont really keep tabs on him because his interviews basically equate to empty promises and potential never filled.

It's not a softball interview... it's simply unoriginal. It's the type of interview someone gives the week of a product launch... the interviewer keeps asking about the process and "how did you get here".

I wonder if any of these game or entertainment reporters ever ask the most basic questions... like... "how many games have you sold?"

For PC? I dunno. The last pc game my system could handle was Rome: Total War. I bought Medieval 2 and still haven't gotten to play it. B&W was at least an interesting time waster. *sigh*

i straight literally stole that game. not pirated, stole, and still couldnt play it for more than 2 hours. that was a long time ago in another lifetime tho =P  It had enough hype to make me wanna gank it from the store haha

do have to give him props for Theme Park, i LOVED that game and played the **** out of it, granted i was in like 3rd or 4th grade but it was still great.  Magic carpet was pretty sick too. didnt play his other stuff before that, but i know the significance of populous.

It's an interview, not a review, and some of his points a valid. Bioware has done world/universe saving plots, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to do something different and more personal. I never got the impression that Mike Laidlaw hated DAO, but he was pointing out the things that they wanted to improve on in DA 2 from DAO, which is a world of difference.

Look at his comments on the survival skill, because they are right on the money. There's one minor quest in all of DAO that depends on survival skill, and other than that it's something to spend points on if you've maxed everything else you wanted. As for crafting stuff, I prefer a system like Divinity 2 or DA 2 for that matter. The only drawback is can't mix on the fly.

Also tying the tactics system into a skill made for a great deal of clunkiness and dying early on in DAO if one was using the presets.

Don't get me wrong, I love Origins to death, but it had its own faults and Mr. Laidlaw points out some of them, and the team's reasoning for either streamlining or getting rid of certain mechanics, nothing more.

I never did stick to presets. Yeah you had to spend a little time getting it right, but I still enjoy it. The uselessness of tactics this time, that you don't ever need to adapt even though your AI tactics are smarter, and you just end up killing the attack button, or you're stuck repeating CCCs, which I have set in auto-tactics but are really not even an afterthought to my preferred play style. Combat's just not fun. I've already given them my input, though.

Laidlaw initially came in from the Jade Empire team, and fully took over control after the PC version of DA:O had gone gold around March 2009. Then they announced a 6 month delay to prepare the console versions and work on Shale and DLC. If you want to isolate Laidlaw's contribution to DA:O, look at the things that were changed in the console versions.

Oh, do me a frigging favor, like DAO was perfect and had no issues, bugs, quests that hung and lets not even consider Awakenings.

DAO was not the second coming, combat had serious issues and DA 2 plays a hell of a lot better imho, and yeah, I have plenty of criticism but I had pleny on DAO too.

Every time I see Laidlaw speak my respect for BioWare goes down a notch. He refuses to acknowledge any of the problems with DA2 and continually bashed Origins.

I am still waiting for someone to ask him about the missing awesome button.
